TYNEDALE RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED

 ANNUAL REPORT FOR SEASON 2008/2009.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE'S REPORT

Another memorable season for the club was overshadowed by the sudden death of Ali Johnson on 1st December 2008, four years after he was injured in a first-team fixture at Fylde. Hundreds of mourners lined the streets of Haltwhistle to pay their respects at his funeral and his parents and the club were inundated with letters from rugby friends from all over the world, who had been inspired by Ali's courage, determination and his humour.

For the 1st XV their first season in National League Division 2 (to be renamed National One next season) has been a roaring success - finishing fourth of a quartet of clubs who broke away from the rest of the Division. What has been particularly satisfying has been the quality of rugby played, resulting in exciting and attractive matches against outstanding opposition.

The Raiders continue to dominate local teams, and although their results have not been as overwhelming as last season, the main problem for the club and the Raiders remains the difficulty in finding competitive opposition.

The club's five leading teams, Colts, Veterans, Grasshoppers, Raiders and 1st XV, all reached their respective finals in the Northumberland Cup competitions, with the 1st XV and Colts being victorious.

Off the field, new match floodlights replaced the training lights on the Dyvel's pitch, the road in front of the clubhouse was re-surfaced, a shop was erected inside the entrance-hall of the club and the foyer was rearranged to provide space for a memorial bench kindly donated by Greta Spark in memory of 'Fred' Spark who died on 26 June 2007. The war memorial boards were also moved to a more prominent position in the entrance hall, and this provided space for shelves for kit and coat- hanging space elsewhere in the foyer.

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

The committee held 10 meetings in the year since the last AGM, and the attendance record of 92% (2007/08 - 80%) was excellent. Some sub-committees worked better than others, with the Corporate Sponsors committee, chaired by Scrap Douglas, being especially effective. The work of Ian Lewis in particular, heading the Marketing and Fund-raising group, deserves a special mention. He has worked prodigiously and effectively, to transform the club's earning capacity, culminating at the end of the season with the announcement of new main club sponsors - the BNS Telecom Group - for next season, in a three-year deal.

Also Stuart Walker (lock) and Rob McDermott (back) moved to London and Robin Holroyd (centre) and Stuart Weir (lock) also moved away. INJURIES

Once again some serious injuries affected performances for both the first team squad and for the Raiders. Apart from injuries to Phil Belgian, Ali Gray and Stuart Johnson, mentioned earlier, during the season Ben Duncan suffered a broken cheek-bone and Dan Herdman suffered a ruptured bowel in a Raiders match at Penrith on 22 November 2008, which kept him out of rugby for the rest of the season. Will Massey had a recurrence of his groin problems and Greg Irvin (knee), Jack Smales (broken foot in Dubai Sevens) and Rob Miller (ankle) also missed matches through injury, but the ankle injuries which Ben Marshall suffered were probably the most serious of all.

Happily, the 1st XV skipper Jamie Murray, who had been sidelined for 12 months because of anterior cruciate ligament problems, came roaring back by October and enjoyed another wonderful season with the first-team squad.

1ST XV LEAGUE TABLE COMPARED WITH PREVIOUS SEASONS

The first team squad has made steady progress in the eight years since the incompleted Foot & Mouth season of 2000/01, as can be seen from the league records:-

 EVENTS

As usual there have been a bewildering number of rugby, social and fund-raising events at Tynedale Park, including:-

Rugby Events

Football Events (CUJFC)

Social Events

The grounds were also used for outside events:

 CONGRATULATIONS TO:

SPONSORS

We are again indebted to those individuals and businesses who generously supported the club during the past season. Our special thanks go to our main sponsor TROYNORTH LTD.

James Little's continued sponsorship has been critical in our battle to provide funds to support the development of rugby at the club.

We are also grateful for the generosity of Northern Counties (Insurance) Ltd. and the Belgian family, C.I. Accountancy, Arnold Clark, UBS Wealth Management, Dickinson Dees, John Lewis/Waitrose, Tynedale Council, HSBC Bank PLC, SCM Pharma and many other firms who have sponsored the club in various ways.

Finally, thanks to those members who sponsored individual players in the first team squad.

OBITUARIES

Ali Johnson (20 August 1980 - 1 December 2008). Ali died following a brain haemorrhage, after bravely battling for four years to overcome the crippling injury which had left him paralysed from the neck downwards.

Ali captained the Colts in season 1997/98 and made his first team debut on 7 October 2000 at Sandal. He first played for Northumberland in 2004 after a period in New Zealand playing for Keri-Keri in the Bay of Islands region. He will be remembered for his battling spirit, his wry sense of humour, his mischievous grin and his ability to cut through cant and hypocrisy.

Carole Little, wife of James Little of Troynorth, who died on 1 September 2008 aged 64 years. A great friend of the club.

Dick Powell died of a heart attack on 11 September 2008. Dick, a flying winger, played for Tynedale and Northumberland just after the Second World War. He remained a keen supporter, despite moving to Norfolk and regularly attended Past Players' lunches.

Valerie Donaldson, wife of David Donaldson a Tynedale stalwart who played in the late 1950's and 1960's in the back-row, died on 6 March 2009 aged 71 years. Valerie had been a staunch supporter of David throughout his playing career and an avid supporter of Tynedale rugby club throughout her life.

David Annan died on 23 March 2009 aged 78 years. David played for Tynedale teams as a lock or back-row forward in the 1950's, captaining the 3rd XV and also serving as Hon. Treasurer of the club in the 1973/74 season.

Capt A.J (Alan) Dyne died on the 9th. May 2009 aged 74 years. Alan was a keen supporter of the club, and a regular attendee at club AGM's.

 GENERAL

THANKS

 GOING FORWARD

We need to improve the gents toilets in the clubhouse, the big hard-standing car-park, the scoreboard and the area under the stand. These are Tynedale's mid-term objectives so far as the facilities are concerned.

We hope to be able to produce an Under20 team at Tynedale next season.

The National leagues are being reorganised. Tynedale 1st XV's league (level 3) will become NATIONAL ONE. There will be 16 teams in that league next season. The 15 other clubs will be: Blackheath, Blaydon, Cambridge, Cinderford, Esher, Launceston, London Scottish, Manchester, Newbury, Nuneaton, Otley, Redruth, Sedgley Park, Stourbridge and Wharfedale.

There will be no EDF National Trophy cup competitions for level 3 clubs.

Proposed pre-season Tynedale 1st XV matches are:-

Tynedale Raiders matches:-

 DOUGLAS HAMILTON.

CHAIRMAN OF RUGBY'S REPORT

As this was my first season as Chairman of Rugby I wanted to sound out the different rugby playing sections, excluding Senior Rugby, before taking any decisions. Subsequent to the meetings I set out to increase co-operation between the 1st XV, and arranged for the Mini Junior Section to organise "demonstration" games at half time at 1st XV home games. These took place in the second half of the season and were enjoyed by the young players, parents and spectators. It is hoped that there will be more of these games in the coming season.

There were three coaching sessions held for the older Juniors by 1st XV players. The half back session held by Gavin Beasley and Ross Samson was very well appreciated by the youngsters. I hope to increase these sessions throughout the season depending on the 1st XV players' availability. They do have a heavy season in front of them, with four extra league fixtures in National League One.

At last season's International Schools Tournament, there was not a representative "Tynedale" team. This season there WILL be a side in the competition. A squad has been selected and the players have been sent invitations, and over 50% have already sent their acceptance. Peter Telfer will be in charge of the team.

It has been decided to try to start an U21 side to help encourage schoolboy/colt leavers to continue playing rugby. It would allow them to be able to play with their mates against players of their own age in a Saturday University League. Watch this space!

I would like to thank those representatives of the Ladies, Colts, Mini Junior and 'junior' Senior Rugby for their help and patience.

PETER ROBERTSON
Chairman of Rugby

CHAIRMAN OF SENIOR RUGBY REPORT

After all the excitement and euphoria at the end of season 2007/08 there was a great sense of anticipation for the season ahead in our first ever venture into National League 2 It was very much a case of going into the unknown, literally in some cases travelling to all corners of the country. After all the hard work on and off the field the first fixture at home agai8nst Mounts Bay was a 'bit of a damp squib', with torrential rain spoiling the occasion. However, our first points in league 2 were achieved, but because of the conditions it gave us no idea of the quality of sides that lay ahead.

It was after our second half performance away at Launceston that the players themselves realised that they were more than capable of competing at this level. This gave us the springboard for the rest of the season. The squad must be congratulated on some outstanding performances, especially at home and be proud of extending our consecutive home league wins to 38. Again it was our disappointing away form that initially was the main concern and crucial points were thrown away due to lack of consistency and in some cases discipline and our yellow card culture!

Our initial away performances certainly cannot be blamed on distances travelled, because the organisation for every away game was excellent. Fully professional clubs would have been proud of the arrangements..

The one away game where the squad eventually put everything together both in attack an defence and gave us a very satisfactory away win was at eventual league champions Birmingham Solihull. This set the yardstick for the professionalism on an off the field that needed to be applied for such a result.

At the end of the season a very satisfying league position of 4th was achieved. An outstanding effort by everyone concerned, particularly with the quality of opposition teams, players, travel and even the new ELV's to be taken into consideration.

The impact the club as a whole has made in the league has been tremendous and some recognition of this has been shown by two of our players, Ross Samson and Rupert Harden being chosen by other coaches in the league for National League 2 Dream Team. Further recognition was also shown by the selection of Rupert Harden, Gavin Beasley and Jack Harrison for the England Counties games versus Ireland and France. Then Jack Harrison, Eniola Gesinde and Joseph Graham were selected for the England Counties tour to Japan and Korea and that squad of 26 will be under the guidance of Tynedale's Head Coach, Tom Borthwick.

Finally, as a club we must make sure we do not rest on our laurels; the 'honeymoon' period is over! Perhaps it was fitting that our tremendous home league record fell to the eventual league champions. It was the impact of this game more than any other that showed us that the areas of conditioning and physicality should be our main focus in pre-season if we are to aspire to greater success next year.

Tynedale players who represented Northumberland in the county championship were Peter Southern, Matthew Fieldhouse, Andrew Murray, Jamie Murray, Jonathan Cousin, Eniola Gesinde, Jack Smales, Jack Harrison, Fraser Shaw, Ben Duncan, William Massey, Jamie Harrison, Grant Beasley and Jonny Williams.

Kevin Showler, Matthew Horrocks and Robbie Gash represented Durham and Joseph Graham represented Cumbria also in the county championship.

Tynedale 1st XV retained the Northumberland Senior Cup, the Raiders, Grasshoppers and Veterans all reached their respective County Cup finals and the Colts won the Northumberland Colts Cup.

Chairman of Senior Rugby

MEMBERSHIP REPORT

In addition to the 18 new members recruited as a result of the two membership drives mounted at the end of the 2007-2008 season, a further 36 members were recruited during the current season. The number of Youth Parent members fell as a result of the decrease in junior section players, so overall membership remained the same.

I would urge members who have friends or colleagues who express an interest in joining the club to pursue them to a satisfactory conclusion! In addition, a further four members showed their commitment to Tynedale RFC by deciding to convert their Social membership to Full membership.

Membership forms are available from me or from behind the bar.

COLTS REPORT

The Colts had a very full and eventually successful season. Up to Christmas they had played 14 games and lost 7, and were standing seventh in the Scottish Borders U18 League. After Christmas they won 5 out of their 6 league games and finished fourth; they reached the final of the East of Scotland Cup, beating Haddington, BATS (Edinburgh Accies), Melrose, Murrayfield, Peebles and Musselburgh before losing 8-7 in the final to Selkirk. The Colts then won the Northumberland County Cup, scoring 182 points to Nil in the three early rounds, and beating Percy Park 7-3 in the final.

The improvement during the season had much to do with the hard work and dedication of lead coach Steven Dunn working with Dan Maddison, Peter Telfer and statistician Paul Curry which inspired a squad of 35 players to train regularly and seriously.

The squad also participated in seven 7's tournaments, winning the Kelso 7's (our first 7's tournament win in the Borders since 1989), reaching the final in the Northumberland 7's, the semi-final at Gala and quarter finals at Jed, Melrose and the 10's at Peebles.

Top try scorers in all matches and tournaments were Andy Evans (28), Cameron McKenna (23), Andy Richardson (13), Ben Frankland and Matty Ousten (12 each). Matty Ousten and Dan Anderson shared the kicking responsibilities. Tom Robb and Andy Evans were both hard working captains on and off the field. Tom played through the Autumn until injury, when he made way for Andy Evans - Tom came back in time fo collect the Kelso 7's cup and Andy collected the County Cup in which Tom had scored the winning try.

Ben Frankland represented the county at U20; Charlie Maddison, Andy Evans, Kit Sorenson and Matty Ousten represented the county at U18, and Angus White the Scottish Exiles at U17.

Graeme Sinclair and Vicky Wright had a particularly hard year dealing with refereeing bureaucracy caused by the Scottish and English Rugby Unions playing different ELVs at youth level.

John Clark recently took over as the President of the Border's U18 league for 2009/10 and has already presented 2 trophies to sides that had just narrowly beaten Tynedale!

COMMERCIAL REPORT

The commercial activities of the club include the following:-

Season 2008/09 has been a very successful year, both on and off the pitch. Building on the solid work of last season the commercial infrastructure of the club should now allow us to look forward and establish us as one of the leading clubs in the league. As with last season it has been a team effort and I would like to thank the following members who have devoted time and energy into making things happen:- Scrap Douglas, Andy Deacon, Wallace Cousin, Tony Smith, Keith Laidler, Mike Coulson, Steve Braysher, Neil Foster, Tim Tatman, John Robinson, John Shotton, and, of course, Douglas Hamilton.

Corporate advertising and sponsorship

As a result of renewed commitments and new income generated through direct approaches and the circulation of the commercial brochure (supported by the quality of the bar & catering and the quality of rugby on offer), the volume of corporate advertising and sponsorship has increased significantly. The income has increased approximately 50% above last season, to around £22,000. Pitch-side advertising boards and corporate lunches have been the main sources of income. However, there is still a need to increase our advertising and sponsorship income so the sponsorship team will continue to approach potential advertisers and sponsors throughout the coming year. As I mentioned last year, any members who know of potential sponsors please contact me or one of the team. A list of club sponsors is available on the club website www.tynedalerfc.co.uk but I would especially like to highlight the following sponsors for their support this season:-

Events

Although the main focus of activity has been on corporate advertising and sponsorship, the club has continued to attract a mix of major and minor events to Tynedale Park which also provide a significant source of income. This summer will see Tynedale Park used for a variety of events almost every weekend until the start of next season. Some of the key events include:

However, we are still keen to attract additional large-scale third-party managed events in order to generate further income, so if members know of any promoters looking for a venue please contact me.

Membership

See separate report from Mike Coulson and Keith Laidler.

Marketing and Communications

Thanks to Steve Braysher the club has received high profile PR in the media, both locally, regionally and nationally. Steve will be providing his help and support again next season so anyone with newsworthy stories relating to on or off field club activities please contact Steve steve.braysher2@internet.com

Again I must thank Wallace Cousin for his commitment to keeping the club website looking interesting and up-to-date: surely a "favourite" on every member's browser. However, Wallace is always interested in new content, so again please send anything you think worthy of mention to him via the website.

Thanks to the time and effort of Douglas Hamilton the match programme continues to be in an editorial league of its own compared with most other clubs.

Next Season

As many members will hopefully now be aware we are delighted to have secured a new main club sponsor for the next three years. BNS Group PLC (www.bnsplc.com ) based in Prudhoe will be sponsoring the club as part of its commitment to supporting the local community; we thank them for their support and hope that the association is a long and successful one.

Commercial Chairman.

VOLUNTEER CO-ORDINATING REPORT

A number of formal volunteer recruitment drives have been mounted during the year, but with limited success. There are probably about ten more members involved to varying degrees in the administration of the club than at this time last year, but most have been recruited by a personal approach. There is usually support from members for one-off club events like the Schools Tournament or a Corbridge Residents' Open Day, but fewer individuals are prepared to get involved in the day-to-day running of Tynedale Rugby Club.

I know that there are a number of reasons for this reluctance but my greatest fear is that many members are complacent about the club. Tynedale RFC is a very well managed organisation but unfortunately this show of healthy well-being masks some of the real problems that we face. Effectively this rugby club is run by a handful of dedicated individuals but we urgently need more members, particularly younger individuals, to offer their energy, experience and skills for use by the club.

An initiative was started at the end of 2008 to establish a permanent working party of volunteers, who would carry out maintenance work and effect improvement to our ground and clubhouse. Unfortunately, the initial stages were interrupted by the Christmas and New Year period, and by prolonged periods of poor weather, and the group lost impetus. Some useful work has been carried out, however, by a handful of volunteers, and the rest of the working party will be approached again during the summer months.

After two years in the post of Volunteer Co-ordinator, I leave the position with the club a little healthier than when I took up the post after the 2007 ASM. A handful of younger members with real potential is now getting involved and this is encouraging, but \I think that succession planning at Tynedale Rugby Club must be one of our highest priorities.
