The eighth International Schools Tournament was held at Tynedale Park on Sunday 3rd September 2006 when thirteen Schools competed for the Tynedale Trophy.
Filton College, Bristol successfully defended their title beating newcomers Stowe School, Buckinghamshire in the Final 14pts to nil. Stowe on their way to the Final beat RGS,Newcastle, Fettes ,Edinburgh and Edinburgh Academy -Filton beat Stowe and RGS Newcastle in the early Pool stages and beat Yarm, Stockton, Merchiston Castle, Edinburgh in the KO Stages.
Tynedale Schools were well beaten by Merchiston at the Quarter final stage while Barnard Castle were very unlucky to lose on a toss of a coin having drawn with Edinburgh Academy.
RGS, Newcastle met local rivals Durham in the Plate Final having beaten Connacht and QEGS,Wakefield previously. Durham beat Northumberland Schools in their semi-final before losing 14-0 in the final.
The Tournament was sponsored by Northumbria University for the first time, it is also supported by Tynedale and Northumberland Councils and the Hexham Courant.
Tynedale RFC are again appreciative of the support for this Tournament from Schools , just about to start their new seasons. A development from this Tournament is that Merchiston will play Ampleforth across various age ranges at Tynedale RFC on Saturday September 16th - 12 teams each commencing at 11.00am.

The club will again be fielding a 'veterans' side this season. John Eustace and Ian Lewis have got their heads together and the response to their pleading and bullying has been extremely positive.
The idea is that the Veterans will turn out roughly once a month, giving time for old worn muscles and joints to recover and also preventing players becoming 'tired' and lethargic from playing too many games!
Tom Borthwick has agreed to continue for 2006-2007.
Tom played all his rugby for Aspatria and Cumbria as a full back or stand off. In 1990 he secured his level 4 RFU coaching qualification and took over as coach of Aspatria. During the next two seasons Aspatria secured successive promotions into National Level 3.
In 1996 Tom took over as Cumbria coach and in his first season Cumbria defeated Somerset in the final of the County Championship. Between 2002 and 2004 Tom has been assistand England Counties coach and currently carries out various coaching duties on behalf of the English RFU.
The Panthers (under 17) squad trains on Saturday mornings from 10:00am until 11:30am and on Wednesdays from 6.00pm until 8.00pm - newcomers are always welcome.
The Panthers are coached by James Johnson with appearances throughout the season from Jo Wells, Northumberland's girls Rugby Development Officer.
Please contact Peter Telfer (01434 684121) or Andy Deacon on 01434 609750 (Home), 07971 526651 (Mobile) if you wish to join or help with this growing section.
Uncertainty as to the number of teams to be relegated from our league caused by the "cascade" effect has been removed by changes announced by the RFU Competition sub-committee. From our league (National 3 North) A MAXIMUM OF THREE CLUBS WILL ALWAYS BE RELEGATED regardless of who is relegated from the league above.
Thats the easy bit!!
The more complicated bit concerns how this is achieved - in order to sustain this change it may be necessary for a minimal number of clubs to move across ("level transfer") into a neighbouring league outside of their normal Constituent Body. (eg. If the bottom three teams in the league above us are all southern teams then to balance the leagues one or two clubs will be "level transferred" from National Three South into our league (National Three North) ). In the absence of volunteers a panel will be responsible for the decision on which clubs will be moved to another league.
From the 1st January 2007, a new set of laws will apply to the scrum at every level of the game. Here are the new laws laid out by the IRB.
1. For the scrum engagement, there will be four calls. First, the referee will call "crouch" and then "touch". This is when each prop has to touch the point of the opposing prop's outside shoulder with their outside arms. The props then withdraw their arms and then referee will call "pause". Following a pause, the referee will say "engage". The engage is not a command but an indication that the front rows may come together when ready.
2. The scrum must be stationary and the middle line of it must be parallel to the goal lines. A team must not shove the scrum away from the mark before the ball is put in. This reinforces law 20.1 (k).
3. The front rows must crouch so that when they meet, each player's head and shoulders are no lower than their hips. This will ensure that both front rows are at a suitable height.
4. There will be a clampdown on crooked feeds from scrum halves.
5. If when asked, sides do not agree that they are informed of and satisfied with the new laws, referees are instructed to go to uncontested scrums - with implications regarding league points - without further discussion.
Captains for season 2004-2005 have been appointed as follows:-
Training on Tuesday and Thursday evenings - starts 19:00 prompt.
Tom Borthwick is senior coach, assisted by Dick Parker.
Kirk Barclay is fitness coach.
Mike Fieldhouse coaches the Raiders.
