Pre-Season Training

Training for the 2009/10 season will start on Thursday 9th July at 7.00pm prompt.

This year as well as the Tuesday and Thursday sessions a third session, on Mondays at 7.00pm, has been introduced. This Monday session will be a Kirk Barclay fitness session whilst the Tuesday and Thursday sessions will be more of the traditional fitness/rugby sessions. It is intended to run the extra Monday sessions unril the end of September.

All of these sessions are open to all players from Colts to First XV.

Tyne Trio On England Counties Tour

Jack Harrison, Joe Graham and Eni Gesinde have been selected for the England Counties tour of Korea and Japan and with Tom Borthwick coaching the side there is a strong Tynedale presence.

All three Tyne boys started in the opening fixture in Korea with Joe Graham and Jack Harrison scoring tries in what turned out to be a one sided match played out in front of 2000 spectators.

In the second fixture Joe Graham and Jack Harrison came on as 2nd half replacements.

In the final match Jack, Joe and Eni all started (playing 68, 75 and 56 minutes respectively) against the professional Top League outfit who led 20-9 at the interval only for the Counties side to score 27 unanswered points in the second period.

1stXV squad before final home match of season


Ross selected for Baa-Baas

Tynedale's scrum half Ross Samson has been selected for the Barbarians side to play against a Bedford Blues XV in the annual East Midlands Mobbs Memorial Match on Tuesday 7th April 2009..

The match is played in honour of Lt Col Edgar Mobbs, the former England, Northampton, East Midlands, Olney and Bedford Modern School wing, who was killed leading an assault on an enemy machine gun post at Passchendale in July 1915.

The game kicks off at 7.30pm at Bedford's Goldington Road ground.

Five Tynedale youngsters, Jonathan Cousin, Graham Dunn, Rhys Evans, Ben Frankland and Jamie March were members of the Northumberland U20's squad who started their campaign with a convincing 17-3 victory over Cheshire on Sunday 22nd February in a match played at Wilmslow RFC.

England recognition for Tyne players (2009)

Four of Tynedale's exciting young stars have been selected for England squads. Rob Miller was in the England U20 squad which played in the U20 Six Nations Championship whilst Rupert Harden, Jack Harrison and Gavin Beasley were selected in a 22 man England Counties squad who played an Irish Clubs XV on Friday 27th February at Donnybrook and France Amateurs at Twickenham on Sunday 14th March 2009.

The Counties side is selected from clubs playing outside the Guiness Premiership.

Following successful cup campaigns the 1stXV, Raiders, Grasshoppers, Veterans and Colts have all reached their respective cup finals.

In the finals the 1stXv will play Gosforth on Wednesday 22nd April (at Northern, 6.15pm), the Raiders will play Morpeth Reivers on Saturday 25th April (at Ashington, 2pm), the Hoppers will play Medicals U21's on Sunday 26th April (at Morpeth, 2pm), the Veterans will play Alnwick IV (at Ashington, 4pm) on Saturday 25th April and the Colts will play Percy Park (at Blyth, 3pm) on Sunday 26th April.

Changes to structure of leagues (2009-2010)

Following the decision of the RFU Council to make changes to the Leagues it is now anticipated that our current league will be called National 1 next season and will be made up of 16 teams (currently called National League 2 with 14 teams).

International Schools Tournament

Sunday 31st August 2008

QEGS Wakefield won the Tynedale Council Trophy when they defeated past champions Filton College from Bristol in a tense final - a single penalty from QEGS being the only score of the match. As runners-up Filton won the Just Sport Trophy. QEGS flanker Joe Barker was awarded the 'player of the tournament' trophy.

Barnard Castle took the Newcastle Building Society Trophy when they defeated Edinburgh Academy in the play-off for third place. Edinburgh finished fourth and won the Hexham Courant Trophy.

Captains for 2008-2009

Captains for season 2008-2009 have been appointed as follows:-

Coach

Tom Borthwick has agreed to continue for 2008-2009.

Tom Borthwick

Tom played all his rugby for Aspatria and Cumbria as a full back or stand off. In 1990 he secured his level 4 RFU coaching qualification and took over as coach of Aspatria. During the next two seasons Aspatria secured successive promotions into National Level 3.

In 1996 Tom took over as Cumbria coach and in his first season Cumbria defeated Somerset in the final of the County Championship. Between 2002 and 2004 Tom has been assistant England Counties coach and currently carries out various coaching duties on behalf of the English RFU. Tom has coached Northumberland over the past two seasons.
