Tynedale 7 v Morpeth 6 (Northumberland Cup Final)

(Half Time 7-0)

Tynedale hung on to win the Northumberland County Cup against a determined Morpeth side who lacked the cutting edge to convert pressure into points.

A depleted and weary Tyne side took a first half lead when Paul Boston scored a good try which was converted by Jamie Murray with Phil Belgian, one of several 'patched-up' Tyne players, unable to kick.

Morpeth kicked two penalties in the middle of the second half but despite their efforts were unable to get the winning score.

Tynedale 21 v Blaydon 25 (League Match)

(Half Time 18-8)

Tynedale lost another home league match against neighbours Blaydon who as a result of their victory ensured they will not be relegated.

Early on Tyne looked well on their way to repeating their drubbing of Blaydon three weeks ago - taking a 18-3 lead after Andrew Murray had scored from a scrum pick up and Keith Johnson had seized on a defensive mix up. Blaydon scored on the stroke of half time to keep in touch and the second half saw a complete turn around as a tired looking Tyne side lost the initiative - the loss of Auld, Rastall and Hills not helping their cause,

Nuneaton 42 v Tynedale 6 (League Match)

(Half Time 27-6)

Tynedale made the long trip to leaders Nuneaton without several key players and were soundly beaten after conceding three tries within the opening 10 minutes. To Tyne's credit they came back with two Andrew Murray penalties but two further tries before half time meant that Tynedale's main job in the second half was to avoid a complete landslide.

Nuneaton scored three further tries in the second half as they demonstrated a far greater relish for the game than earlier in the season when playing on a covering of snow! Nuneaton showed a sharp cutting edge throughout but were only able to kick one ot their kicks at goal.

TEAM: B Duncan, M Lytollis(S Allen), B Hills , A Hopps, M Bolam, J White, E Holmes, B Milburn,E Parker, P Southern(C Baty), K Johnson, S Turnbull (S Auld), A Robson,, A Murray, G Rastall (M Clark) Reps: S Allen, C Baty, S Auld, M Clark Scorers: Murray - 2 pens

Blaydon 15 v Tynedale 48 (League Match)

(Half Time 3-16)

Tynedale effectively secured their future in National Leagues for next season with a comprehensive demolition of a poor, dispirited Blaydon side who only really threatened in a ten minutes spell in the second half with the result of the match already decided.

Playing with the breeze in the first half Tynedale were encamped in the Blaydon half for almost the entire 40 minutes and the match would have been over by half time had Phil Belgian not had an unfamiliar off day with his goalkicking.

Belgian kicked two out of four penalties in the opening 20 minutes but Blaydon did kick a penalty of their own following a rare sortie into Tynedale's half.

Tynedale's dominance behind the scrum was then underlined when first Alli Hopps broke through beautifully for his first Tynedale try and then Ben Duncan crossed after an excellent Barry Hills break from halfway.

Tynedale pressed straightaway at the start of the second half and Mark Lytollis was bundled into touch just short of the line. A scrum on half way led to Tyne's next try when Andrew Murray fed Jimmy Cartmell who broke away before putting in a clever chip with Grant Rastall winning the chase for the touchdown.

This was followed by a Belgian penalty to make the scoreline 26-3. At this stage Blaydon had their best spell of the match and were rewarded with a converted try. Tynedale responded immediately and a tremendous driving maul resulted in Duncan speeding over for his second try. In what was a hectic period of the match Blaydon then scored their second try but again Tynedale responded immediately with a try from Hills after further great back play.

A penalty from Belgian added to Blaydon's misery before Murray forced his way over for the final try to seal an emphatic victory.

TEAM: J White, M Lytollis, B Hills (M Bolam), A Hopps, B Duncan, P Belgian, E Holmes, B Milburn (C Baty), S Auld (E Parker), P Southern, K Johnson (S Turnbull), A Robson, J Cartmell, A Murray, G Rastall Reps: M Bolam, C Baty, E Parker, S Turnbull Scorers: Hopps - try, Duncan - 2 tries, Rastall - try, Hills - try, Murray - try, Belgian - 3 conv, 4 pen

Tynedale 16 v Waterloo 58 (League Match)

(Half Time 9-24)

Tynedale suffered their heaviest league defeat against a very slick, confident Waterloo side who scored nine tries in a landslide victory.

The real damage was done in the opening 20 minutes when Waterloo fully capitalised on some slack Tynedale defensive play to score three excellent tries whereas Tyne were unable to breach the visitor's defence despite the efforts of Barry Hills in particular. Tynedale's cause was not helped by the yellow carding of scum half Ed Holmes during this period for over-aggressive removal of a body from a ruck - the touchjudges intervention ensured the only sin-binning of a match in which more obvious skull duggery went unpunished by the three officials.

After such a disastrous opening period Tynedale were always struggling although they gradually scrapped their way back into things and were rewarded with two Phil Belgian penalties, the second of which saw the departure of Jamie Murray when he took a heavy tackle a split second before the ball.

Waterloo were not to be denied however and after hooker Aaron Charlton became the next casualty with a nasty knee injury they scored their fourth try from a scrum . Belgian converted Tyne's third penalty on the stroke of half time to make it 9-24 at the break.

The 2nd half began as badly as the first and Waterloo scored within a minute to signal their intentions. Tyne's luck was not holding and after 5 minutes of the half prop Dick parker had to be replaced. Unfortunately almost immediately afterwards scrum half Ed holmes had to be carried from the field to leave the home side with 14 players. This however signalled one of Tyne's bettre periods of the match and after intense pressure makeshift scrum half Andrew Murray forced his way over.

The Tyne scrum was now in retreat and Waterloo scored three tries in a nightmare 7 minute period. Tyne never gave up and some critical reorganisation stabalised the scrum allowing parity in the last 15 minutes before Waterloo scored thgeir final try with the last action of the match.

TEAM: J White, M Lytollis, B Hills, A Hopps(P Boston), B Duncan, P Belgian, E Holmes, R Parker (B Milburn), A Charlton(S Auld), P Southern, K Johnson, M Morinson, J Cartmell, J Murray (A Murray), G Rastall Reps: P Boston, B Milburn, S Auld, A Murray Scorers: A Murray - try, Belgian - conv, 3 pens

Sat 8th March 2003

Waterloo 21 v Tynedale 13 (League Match)

(Half Time 13-3)

Tynedale were second best against high flying Waterloo but came away feeling confident that they could turn the tables at Corbridge the following week.

In wet conditions Waterloo applied all the pressure in the opening 20 minutes but were restricted to a single unconverted try . After 30 minutes they were awarded the first of two controversial tries before Phil Belgian opened the Tyne account with a penalty, Waterloo responded quickly with a penalty of their own to make it 3-13 at the interval.

The second half was largely dominated territorially by Tynedale but we failed to make that advantage count. Belgian kicked an early penalty but that was once again quickly cancelled. After 70 minutes Waterloo were awarded their third try although again many thought the ball had not been grounded.

A period of pressure and good continuity resulted in a consolation try for Jake White with only several minutes remaining.

TEAM: J White, B Duncan, B Hills (S Allen), A Hopps, M Bolam, P Belgian, E Holmes, R Parker (B Milburn), E Parker (A Charlton), P Southern, K Johnson, A Robson, J Cartmell, J Murray, G Rastall (M Mortinson) Reps: S Allen, M Mortinson, A Charlton, B Milburn Scorers: White - try, Belgian - conv, 2 pens

Preston Grasshoppers 19 v Tynedale 29 (League Match)

(Half Time 10-6)

After five successive defeats Tynedale gained a much needed victory against form side Preston Grasshoppers.

Playing into the breeze in the first half Tyne took an early lead through a Phil Belgium penalty but Hoppers soon showed their paces and came back with two tries - one converted. Before half time a second Belgium penalty kept Tyne in contention.

The second half was all Tynedale as they quickly took control with a try from Ed Holmes converted by Belgium giving us the lead and a further try from a lineout drive by Keith Johnson making the score 20-10.

Hoppers broke away to score a converted try but it was Tyne who continued to dominate and Belgium, who kicked well throughout, kicking us to a comfortable winning margin.

TEAM: J White, B Duncan, B Hills, P Boston, M Bolam, P Belgian, E Holmes, R Parker , E Parker, P Southern, K Johnson, A Robson, J Cartmell, J Murray, G Rastall Reps: S Allen, C Baty, A Charlton, B Milburn Scorers: Holmes-try, Johnson-try, Belgian - 2 conv, 5 pens

Tynedale 13 v New Brighton 16 (League Match)

(Half Time 3-13)

Tynedale suffered another home league defeat by promotion chasing New Brighton when a last minute penalty from the visitors snatched victory.

Tynedale, playing into a stiff breeze in the first half, started well and Phil Belgian convrted a penalty after a good break by himself had led to a New Brighton infringement.

New Brighton missed a good chance to level the scores but were on target after 15 minutes after James Ponton had been penalised and yellow carded for a tackle -one of a string of bazare decisions by the referee who deemed a professional foul by the visitors to prevent an 'almost certain' score did not warrant such a card.

With Ponton off New Brighton attacked strongly and they must be wondering how they failed to score when several times they failed to make the final pass when a score seemed inevitable.

When Ponton returned Tynedale had further periods of promise but New Brighton edged ahead in the third minute of stoppage time and worse was to follow when almost straight from the restart a floated pass on half way was intercepted by New Brighton to score under the posts to put a different complexion on matters. Tyne were able to claw back three points before the interval when Belgian converted a penalty in a hectic elongated period of stoppage time.

Tyne dominated the first 25 minutes of the second half territorially but seldom seemed likely to break through a well-drilled NB defence and for the only period in the match the referee opted not to give penalties. After 25 minutes however Tyne drew level when Jamie Murray put in a deft kick through which Jake White accelerated onto to score, Belgian converting.

The last 10 minutes however belonged largely to the visitors aided by a series of penalties as the Ref came right back into the match. Tyne defended excellently against a series of line out drives and 5 metre scrums but as the match entered stoppage time they seemed to have weathered the storm. The inevitable happened however as New Brighton set up one last attack as the Ref gave the last of his mystifying decisions. NB's successful penalty left only a couple of minutes for Tyne to come back and although they tried bravely the strong NB defence held out for a victory in what was always a very close match.

TEAM: J Mock, N Mather (M Lytollis), B Hills, J White, M Bolam, P Belgian, E Holmes, R Parker , S Auld (E Parker), P Southern, K Johnson, S Turnbull (G Rastall), A Robson, J Murray, J Ponton Reps: M Lytollis, C Baty, E Parker, G Rastall Scorers: Try - White, Belgian conv, 2 pen

Sat 8th February 2003

Liverpool St Helens 19 v Tynedale 10 (League Match)

(Half Time 12-3)

Tynedale tumbled to another league defeat after paying the penalty for a slow start.

LSH took an early lead when they scored from a line out drive and they quickly increased their lead after further pressure. At this stage Tynedale began to apply some pressure and Phil Belgian converted a penalty to narrow the margin.

The game was end to end but in the last quarter Tyne began to control the game and gained territorial advantage. A breakaway try however ruined Tyne's comeback chances and their sole reward with a good try from Jonathan Mock.

TEAM: J Mock, M Bolam, B Hills, J White, N Mather, P Belgian, E Holmes, R Parker , S Auld, P Southern, K Johnson, G Smith, A Robson (G Rastall), J Murray, J Cartmell (E Parker) Reps: M Lytollis, B Milburn, E Parker, G Rastall Scorers: Try - Mock, Belgian conv, pen

Sat 1st February 2003

Tynedale 10 v Dudley Kingswinford 15 (League Match)

(Half Time 0-15)

Tynedale suffered their third successive defeat to Dudley in what was an absolutely woeful match. Playing into a strong wind in the first half Tynedale struggled to get out of their own half. The forwards at times drove the ball purposefully up the field but Tyne were never able to threaten the DK line and found themselves with a lot of defending to do.

Dudley scored three unconverted tries, perhaps the last on the stroke of the interval being the critical score psychologically. Tynedale already suffering from the loss of three players from the previous week - two of them in plaster - lost key players Paul Boston and Jimmy Cartmell in the opening 30 minutes and were never able to assert themselves against a Dudley team who have also been ravaged by injury and who were desparately looking for victory.

Both halves were stop-start affairs with the referee allowing infinite time for 'injured' players from both sides to have treatment - extra time of over 10 minutes was played in each half!

With the wind in the second period Tyne came more into the game and were unfortunate not to be awarded a try after a scintillating break by Barry Hills after only 3 minutes. A penalty from Phil Belgian shortly afterwards got the scoreboard moving and after 19 minutes the Tyne pack were awarded a penalty try when the DK pack disintegrated as a scrum trundled towards the line.

At 10-15 and over 20 minutes remaining it looked promising for Tyne but a combination of stoppages after stoppages, poor decision making and detremined play from DK meant that we never really looked like scoring again.

Generally the spectator were relieved to hear the final whistle after braving over 100 minutes of frustration.

TEAM: J White, J Mock, B Hills, P Boston (A Hopps), N Mather, P Belgian, E Holmes, R Parker , E Parker, P Southern, K Johnson, G Smith, A Robson, J Murray, J Cartmell (S Auld) Reps: A Hopps, C Irving, S Auld, A Charlton Scorers: Penalty Try, Belgian - pen, conv

Sat 25th January 2003

New Brighton 34 v Tynedale 10 (League Match)

(Half Time 27-5)

Tynedale suffered their second successive comprehensive defeat when they went down to New Brighton in a match which things didnt really go their way. Playing into a gale force wind in the first half their attempts to contain New Brighton were thwarted when New Brighton scored a good try in the very first minute.

Worse was to follow when the hosts quickly scored their second try and although some of Tyne's play was very good in difficult conditions it was the home side who continued to take their chances. In the 16th minute a penalty increased New Brighton's lead and then they were awarded a disputed try shortly afterwards.

Tynedale scored a deserved try through the excellent Barry Hills and hoped were raised but a further home score near half time gave us a mountain to climb.

In the second half New Brighton succeeded in restricting Tyne's possession although a good try from Ed Holmes after 59 minutes narrowed the margin.

The last quarter was disruped when Keith Dungait was sadly stretchered off with a broken ankle - Keith has battled hard over the past 12 months to return from a serious knee injury and this latest injury will come as a real body blow to Keith. Tyne also lost Jamie Murray with a head injury and it was New Brighton who had the last word when they scored in the dying minutes to register a convincing wiin.

TEAM: J Mock, E Holmes, B Hills, P Boston, N Mather, P Belgian, K Dungait, R Parker , E Parker, A Johnson, K Johnson, A Murray, A Robson, J Murray, S Auld Reps: A Hopps, P Southern, G Smith, A Charlton Scorers: Hills - try, Holmes - try

Sat 18th January 2003

Tynedale 8 v Preston Grasshoppers 26 (League Match)

(Half Time 3-19)

Tynedale were comprehensively beaten be a very lively Hoppers side who on the day had too much gas for a strangely below par home side whose defence was very poor.

Hoppers started strongly but Tynedale worked their way up the field to pressure the Hoppers line but Tynedale failed to show the imagination necessray to breach a strong Hoppers defence.

The game turned dramatically in a two minute spell midway through the first half. Tynedale made a mess of ball from their own scrum and a desparate clearance kick was charged down to present the first try. Worse was to follow when almost straight from the kick off the Hoppers winger went over wide out to give the visitors a 12-0 lead.

Just before the interval Phil Belgian converted a penalty to put Tyne back in the game but in first half stoppage time further weak defending allowed a critical Hoppers try which was converted to give Hoppers a convincing 19-3 half time lead.

Tynedale did start the second half strongly and Belgian hit the post with a penalty after 8 minutes but it was a confident Hoppers side who now held the upperhand. Some terrible defending allowed the Hoppers fly half to jink through for a further try and Tynedale's only consolation was a well worked try for winger Ed Holmes.

Generally a very disappointing performance - perhaps the night's Dinner Dance proved too much of a distraction !

TEAM: J White, M Lytollis(K Dungait), B Hills, P Boston, M Bolam, P Belgian, E Holmes, R Parker (A Johnson), E Parker(A Charlton), P Southern, K Johnson, G Smith(S Auld), A Robson, J Murray, A Murray Reps: K Dungait, A Johnson, S Auld, A Charlton Scorers: Holmes - try, Belgian - pen

Sat 4th January 2003

Tynedale 24 v Nuneaton 3 (League Match)

(Half Time 11-3)

An excellent victory for Tynedale over league leaders Nuneaton who never really looked like upsetting the home side in a match played on remarkably good pitch conditions.

The first 20 minutes was the most competitive part of a match which became surprisingly one sided. Tynedale took the lead with a Phil Belgian penalty after 18 minutes but Nuneaton did have their moments and only a fine tackle by Jake White halted his opposite number after he had broken through.

Nuneaton lost their hooker and their lineout play became increasingly ragged and Tyne increased their lead when Jake White showed a good turn of pace to pounce on a clever chip through behind a leaded-footed Nuneaton defence.

Suprisingly Nuneaton spurned a couple of relatively straightforward penalty chances and opted for lineouts which Tyne repelled with ease. Eventually Nuneaton did opt for a kick at goal and were rewarded with three points but Belgian quickly responded with a kick of his own to make it 11-3 at the interval.

The second half was all Tynedale's with Nuneaton only venturing into Tynedale's half on the very rare occasion. Belgian kicked another penalty and the game was sealed when Jamie Murray scored after some forward pressure. A last minute penalty from Belgian made the scoreline realistic and completed what was an excellent all round performance.

TEAM: J White, M Lytollis, B Hills, P Boston, J Mock, P Belgian, E Holmes (K Dungait), R Parker (A Johnson), E Parker, P Southern, K Johnson, A Murray, A Robson, J Murray, J Cartmell (S Auld) Reps: K Dungait, A Johnson, S Auld, G Smith Scorers: White - try, J Murray - try, Belgian - conv, 4 pen

Sat 14th December 2002

Tynedale 23 v Darlington Mowden Park 17 (League Match)

(Half Time 10-10)

Another close victory for Tynedale in a tight match on a dull, dark day at Corbridge.

Tyne opened brightly and an excellent passage of play created the opportunity for Paul Boston to score after only 2 minutes. Darlington came back into the game and drew level when they scored a converted try after a series of driving mauls. The sides then exchanged penalties to make it 10-10 at the interval.

Tyne took the lead early in the second half through an excellent Phil Belgian penalty and retained their narrow lead until the 65th minute when Darlington ran in a try from a quickly taken drop out to take a four point advantage.

Tynedale came back strongly and pressurised the Darlington line before Keith Dungait dived through from a scrum for a try which Belgian converted. Belgian added a penalty in injury time and the final whistle blew after one last Darlington attack had been thwarted.

TEAM: J White, E Holmes, B Hills, P Boston, J Mock (A Hopps), P Belgian, K Dungait, R Parker, A Charlton (S Auld), P Southern, K Johnson, A Murray, A Robson, J Murray, J Cartmell (G Smith) Reps: A Hopps, B Milburn, S Auld, G Smith Scorers: Boston - try, Dungait - try, Belgian - 2 conv, 3 pens

Sat 7th December 2002

Scunthorpe 19 v Tynedale 20 (League Match)

(Half Time 19-10)

Tynedale gained the closest of victories over bottom team Scunthorpe but had to come back from behind and then hang on in the closing minutes to secure the victory.

In the first half Scunthorpe scored all their points including three tries whilst Tynedale scored a fine individual try from Barry Hills. In the second half Tyne cut the gap with a Phil Belgian try and Scunthorpe's cause was not helped when they had one of their second rows sent off.

Ten minutes from the end Belgian kicked a penalty from half way to give us a single point advantage. Scunthorpe attacked strongly in the dying minutes but Tyne held out for victory.

TEAM: J Mock, A Hopps, B Hills, P Boston, M Bolam (S Allen), P Belgian, E Holmes (B Milburn), R Parker, S Auld, P Southern, K Johnson, G Smith (A Charlton), A Robson(J Murray), A Murray, J Cartmell Reps: S Allen, B Milburn, A Charlton, J Murray Scorers: Hills - try, Belgian - try,2 conv, 2 pen

Sat 30th November 2002

Tynedale 34 v Broadstreet 21 (League Match)

(Half Time 16-7)

Tynedale gained a merited home victory in attrocious conditions despite a late rally by Broadstreet which threatened to steal the spoils.

Tynedale largely held the upperhand in a remarkably entertaining match considering the conditions. Tyne took an early lead with an Andrew Murray penalty and increased their lead on 13 minutes when Jake White evaded a couple of attempted tackles to score after the Tynedale forwards had given Broadstreet a hard time in the scrum.

Broadstreet went close from a driving maul but they then had their skipper sin-binned and Tynedale capitalised with Murray kicking his second penalty. Further forward pressure allowed Andrew Robson to score but on the stroke of the interval Broadstreet came back into the match with a try from a driving maul following a lineout.

Tynedale edged further ahead with penalties from Murray but in a frantic last 10 minutes both sides scored two tries each with Broadstreet narrowing the score to 27-21. Youngster Mattie Bolam finished well for Tynedale before a fine opportunist try in injury time from Barry Hills killed any hopes that Broadstreet may have harboured.

TEAM: J Mock, B Duncan, B Hills, P Boston, M Bolam, J White, E Holmes, R Parker, S Auld (A Charlton), P Southern, K Johnson, A Murray, A Robson (G Smith), J Murray, J Cartmell Reps: K Dungait, B Milburn, A Charlton, G Smith Scorers: White - try, Robson - try, Bolam - try, Hills - try, A Murray - 4 pen, 1 conv

Sat 23rd November 2002

Bedford Athletic 18 v Tynedale 25 (League Match)

(Half Time 8-17)

An excellent victory and well deserved. Tynedale made their longest trip without the league's top point scorer Phil Belgian and with other players unavailable or injured they brought in youngsters Jonathan Mock and Mattie Bolam for their debuts.

Tyne played well in the first half and turned around 17-8 up following two good tries from Paul Boston both converted by the multi-talented Andrew Murray. Murray also kicked a penalty whilst Bedford scored a penalty and a try.

Jake White scored a third try after only 2 minutes of the second half and when Murray kicked a penalty after 10 minutes the score was 25-8 and victory seemed assured.

Bedford, however, came back strongly and scored two unconverted tries in the 55th and 76th minutes. Tynedale had to defend strongly in the dying minutes to preserve a well deserved victory.

TEAM: J Mock, B Duncan, B Hills, P Boston, M Bolam, J White, E Holmes, R Parker, S Auld (A Charlton), P Southern, K Johnson, G Smith(J Cartmell), A Robson , J Murray, A Murray Reps: S Allen, C Irving, A Charlton, J Cartmell Scorers: Boston - 2 tries, White - try, A Murray - 2conv, 2 pen

Sat 16th November 2002

Tynedale 18 v Halifax 29 (League Match)

(Half Time 15-0)

Tynedale crashed to their first home league defeat of the season after taking a 15-0 lead at half time. On a bright, calm day at Corbridge their were no elements to consider which makes the turn around all the more disappointing.

Tyne had by far the better of the first half and ran in two tries through Alan Moses and Jake White and should have had more points but Phil Belgian was carrying a knee injury and he struggled with his palce kicking - Andrew Murray having to take over the duties.

Two tries in a minute mid-way through the second half brought Halifax right back into the game and they edged ahead for the first time with a penalty shortly after. Tyne came back with renewed vigour and Alan Moses dropped a goal to give us a slender 18-17 advantage with only seven minutes left.

With the clock tickiing Halifax scored a winning try to take a 22-18 lead and with Tynedale running everything they capitalised with a converted try right on the stroke of time.

TEAM: A Moses, B Duncan, B Hills, J White, M Lytollis (K Dungait), P Belgian, E Holmes, R Parker, S Auld, P Southern, K Johnson, G Smith, A Robson (A Charlton), J Murray, A Murray Reps: K Dungait, C Irving, A Charlton, Johnson Scorers: Moses - try, drop goal, White - try, A Murray - conv, pen

Hull Ionians 30 v Tynedale 15 (League Match)

Click Here to view report on Hull's website + a few photos

(Half Time 16-15)

Tynedale had a disappointing day at Hull where they gave their poorest performance of the season to date.Things didnt go well all day for Tynedale starting before the kick off when flanker Jimmy Cartmell went down with sickness and although he decided he could start he had to be replaced. We didnt help ourselves either as three players were yellow carded and some of our play didn't reach the standards expected. On top of this we lost Ed Parker after he was assaulted by the Hull second row in a somewhat cowardly unprovoked attack.

Tyne got off to a disastrous start and seemed to be half asleep as Hull scored within a minute. Fine tries from Paul Boston and Barry Hills in the first half gave us some hope as we turned around 15-16 down.

The second half was very poor from Tynedale's point of view with a combination of poor play and ill discipline combining to present Hull with a well deserved victory.

Dudley Kingswinford 16 v Tynedale 16 (League Match)

(Half Time 11-9)

Tynedale shared the spoils after levelling the scores with a last minute converted try. On a wet, horrible day Tyne had the advantage of the elements in the first half but found themselves 9-11 down at half time.

Phil Belgian gave Tyne a six point advantage with two early penalties but Dudley pressure resulted in a penalty for the home side which they converted. A third Belgian penalty restored Tyne's six point advantage but Dudley came back strongly before half time scoring a try and a penalty to gain the advantage at the interval.

Dudley scored a fine try early in the second half but Tynedale played well in the final quarter and were rewarded when Peter Southern was driven over for a last minute try close to the posts - Belgian converted to earn a hard earned league point.

Tynedale 35 v Liverpool St Helens 28 (League Match)

(Half Time 19-20)

Tynedale gained a well earned victory with another exciting performance against a strong LSH side. Playing into the strong wind in the first half Tynedale took the game to Liverpool St Helens and scored three good tries through Barry Hills, Phil Belgian and Shane Auld. Despite playing well and scoring three tries Tyne still found themselves down 19-20 at the interval with Liverpool scoring two converted tries and two penalties..

Tynedale used the wind well in the second period with Belgian keeping LSH pinned back although LSH were always dangerous when running the ball out of defence.

Belgian kicked an early penalty in the second half to restore Tynedale's lead and scored a critical try when Andrew Robson was driven over with 15 minutes remaining which Belgian converted from the touchline.

LSH and Belgian exchanged penalties before Belgian kicked a drop goal to seal the match. LSH never lay down and scored an unconverted try with only stoppage time to play.

Tynedale ran in 8 tries to Hull's 3 in an extraordinary match. Playing into the wind in the first half Tyne took the initiative as early as the 4th minute when Paul Boston picked up a loose ball deep inside his own half and raced away for the first of his three tries.

Five minutes later Andrew Murray broke through the Hull defence before passing inside to Barry Hills who touched down under the posts. The same player, Hills, touched down a few minutes later when he skipped around the full back to score after Jamie Murray and put him away.

Hull hit back with a penalty but Phil Belgian quickly responded with a successful kick for Tyne. An excellent handling movement resulted in Alan Moses scoring Tyne's fourth try and then a rampant Tynedale side scored their fifth try shortly before the break when that man Boston scored again to give tynedale a 36-3 lead after playing into a stiff breeze.

The first 20 minutes of the second half was a complete turn around with Hull dominating possession and breaking through the Tynedale defence several times - scoring three tries to bring themselves right back in contention at 36-22.

Belgian hit the upright with a long range penalty and was narrowly wide with a drop kick as Tynedale started to press Hull for the first time in the second period. The match was effectively sealed when with ten minutes left on the clock Mark Lytollis caught the Hull full back on half way and Jamie Murray won the ball to release Boston for his hat trick. Hull were now a beaten side and Moses and White ran in further tries to give Tyne a convincing winning scoreline.

Halifax 29 v Tynedale 14 (League Match)

(Half Time 17-6)

Tynedale suffered a disappointing defeat and conceded 4 tries in the process. Playing against the elements in the opening half they failed to prevent an early score from the Halifax scrum half but quickly got into the match with two good penalty kicks from Phil Belgian.

Critically Tyne conceded two tries to Halifax in a short period immediately before the break to give Halifax a handy advantage. Worse was to follow when Halifax scored again early in the second period although there was a hint of a forward pass in the move.

Tynedale battled away and scored a well taken try through Mark Lytollis before Belgian kicked his third penalty to bring the score to 14-22. Tynedale however didnt take the odd chance they had and the game was wrapped up by Halifax when they scored another converted try in the dying moments.

Tynedale 32 v Waterloo 37 (Powergen Cup - Round two)

(Half Time 25-13)

Tynedale went out of the Powergen National Cup when they lost to impressive Waterloo in a highly entertaining topsy-turvy match.

Tynedale playing with a stiff breeze behind them in the first half missed two early penalties before Phil Belgian succeeded after a strong surge from Paul Boston. Tynedale scored a converted try straight from the kick off when Shane Auld had a splendid run from deep inside his own half. The move was carried on by Andrew Murray and Barry Hills who flipped the scoring pass to Auld who went over for a fine try.

Waterloo were moving the ball well and came back strongly with a well created try and then kicked a penalty to narrow the score further. After 25 minutes Auld was on hand again to score his second try after back row compatriots Andrew Murray and Stuart Johnson and cut through the visitors defence.

Both team's attacking play outplayed their defencive qualities and Waterloo quickly came back for their second try to make the score 17-13. As half time approached Tyne lifted their game and were rewarded with a Belgian penalty and right on the stroke of half time that man Auld struck again when he intercepted a short pass around the side of the Waterloo scrum to sprint home for a unique first half hat trick.

Tynedale started the second period nervously and Waterloo were quickly pressurising the home line. A loose clearance was moved slickly for a Waterloo try after 7 minutes and Waterloo continued to dominate with a fine display of tactical kicking and some strong direct forward drives. They kicked a succession of penalties and went into a 27-25 lead after 25 minutes. A further penalty 5 minutes later however seemed to inspire Tynedale and Paul Boston scored a fine individual try which Belgian converted to give Tyne a 32-30 lead with only 7 minutes of normal time remaining.

Waterloo were quickly doen in the Tyne 22 and with only 2 minutes remaining scored the winning try when a Waterloo player stole the ball from a Tynedale maul and forced his way over. Tynedale came back strongly in the dying minutes but Waterloo held on for a victory which they probably deserved.

Tynedale 18 v Bedford Athletic 16 (League Match)

(Half Time 10-10)

Tynedale gained a last gasp victory by means of a 40 metre Phil Belgian drop goal with literally the last kick of the match.

Tynedale wasted a lot of possession and certainly didnt take all their chances with Belgian suffering an off day with his boot. Bedford took an early 10-0 lead and things looked ominous but some strong surges by Jamie Murray and Andrew Robson allowed Paul Boston the chance to show his strength as be broke through to score. Belgian converted and kicked a penalty on the stroke of half time to level the scores.

Bedford took the initiative in the second half and kicked two penalties but Tynedale came back and Simon Allen scored after some fine play by Boston. Things looked over for Tynedale when Bedford kicked at goal deep into stoppage time but the kick missed and the Tynedale counter eventually gained the position from where Belgian struck his match winning kick.

Tynedale 19 v Hull Ionians 13 (Powergen Cup - Round one)

(Half Time 6-7)

Tynedale progressed into the second round of the National Powergen Cup with a close victory in a somewhat scrappy, disjointed match.

Tyne took an early lead with a Phil Belgian penalty but Hull came back well and were rewarded for some pressure with a converted try. A further penalty from Belgian made the score 6-7 at the interval.

Hull increased their lead in the second half with a further penalty but Belgian quickly replied before Shane Auld went over for the critical try from a lineout drive. Belgian then kicked a penalty with five minutes remaining as Tynedale dominated territorially in the final quarter. Hull did manage a stoppage time penalty but were unable to add to it with time running out.

Broadstreet 8 v Tynedale 14 (League Match)

(Half Time 8-0)

Tyne recorded a fine victory over new boys Broadstreet when only a rare off day for Phil Belgian's kicking prevented a clearer victory. Tynedale were 8-0 down at the interval against a surprisingly sluggish Broadstreet side but came back well with the elements in the second half to win a rather dour encounter..

In the first half Tynedale never really got going and found themselves 8-0 down after 24 minutes. A series of missed penalty opportunities before and after half time didnt help Tyne's cause and it was Barry Hills who opened the scoring after 49 minutes when he forced his way over for a try after a quick tap penalty was taken by the alert Jamie Murray,

Belgian regained his usual form with apenalty after 63 minutes to bring the scores level and shortly afterwards kicked another to ease us ahead. Tynedale finished the match well on top and Alan Moses sealed the match with a drop goal in the dying minutes.

 TEAM: J White, B Duncan, B Hills, P Boston, A Moses, P Belgian, E Holmes, P Southern, E Parker, C Irving (C Baty), K Johnson, S Turnbull (G Smith), A Robson, J Murray, A Murray Reps: C Baty, G Smith, I Donkin, S Jewitt Scorers: Belgian - 2 pens, Moses - drop goal, Hills - try

Tynedale 46 v Scunthorpe 5 (League Match)

(Half Time 31-0)

Tynedale's opening home league match was abandoned after 64 minutes when a Scunthorpe player suffered a serious injury. The Air Ambulance transported him to hospital where thankfully his injury was found only to be severe bruising and he was able to travel home with the Scunthorpe squad.

Tynedale dominated the match from the start, in the set pieces in particular, and had the match effectively won after only 13 minutes - scoring three converted tries during that opening period. Phil Belgian also had a fine day with the boot - successfully converting all seven attempted conversions and penalties.

Tyne scored after only three minutes when Phil Belgian was driven over after good play by Ben Duncan and Paul Boston had taken play close to the Scunthorpe line. Significantly the whole move had only been possible because the Tynedale forwards had made a complete mess of Scunthorpe's scrum only a few seconds into the game,

Alan mosed dummied over for the second try and Paul Boston scored the third, finishing strongly after a superb piece of line out play centered around Jamie Murray. Tyne continued to win all the ball but sloppyness crept in and the next try came shortly before half time when the refereee awarded a penalty try after lively skipper Keith Johnson was held back as he kicked the ball through.

Scunthorpe gave a far better showing in the second period but another tyne score was inevitable after intense pressure and it was Andrew Murrey who surged over after some good handling. Scunthorpe came back and scored a try after some weak Tyne defence close to the line. This spurred Tyne on and debut boy Ben Duncan scored a fine try when he came in off his wing to split the Scunthorpe defence. Unfortunately the Scunthorpe played was injured in the play leading to this try and the match was eventually abandoned.

 TEAM: J White, B Duncan, B Hills, P Boston(S Allen), A Moses, P Belgian, E Holmes, P Southern, E Parker(A Charlton), B Milburn, K Johnson, S Turnbull, A Robson(A Murray), J Murray, J Cartmell Reps: A Charlton, C Irving, S Allen, A Murray Scorers: Belgian - try, 5 convs, 2 pens, Moses - try, Boston - try, A Murray - try, Duncan - try, Penalty Try

Darlington MP 31 v Tynedale 18 (League Match)

(Half Time 14-6)

TTynedale got off to a shaky start to their league campaign, struggling to win any quality ball and it was only in the final quarter when we threw caution to the wind that we were able to release our dangerous backs.

With a makeshift front row we struggled in the scrum but more dissappointing was our poor performance in the lineout.

DMp scored after only 7 minutes although Phil Begian replied with a penalty shortly afterwards. A further converted try midway through the first half gave DMP a omfortable lead although Belgian narrowed the scores on the stroke of half time with his second penalty.

Any hopes of a revival in the second period were quickly dispelled when DMP scored another converted try after 8 minutes and a big score looked possible when they scored another 7 points midway through the half.

We came more into the game in the final quarter and Jamie Murray and Paul Boston both scored good tries as the new look Tyne backs at last were given some possession but by then the match was over.
