Tynedale 22 v Blaydon 3 (League Match)

Tynedale ran out comfortable winners over neighbours Blaydon thus recording their third victory of the season over their arch rivals - if only we could play them every week (only joking!).

Blaydon had the better of the first half and Tynedale were largely on the defensive although Blaydon rarely looked like scoring. Poor discipline cost Blaydon two players to the sin bin as Tynedale slowly turned the screw.

In the second half Tynedale always looked the likely victors with Phil Belgian having a fine day with the boot and with 15 minutes to go Tynedle led 9-3. A further Belgian penalty stretched the margin further before some fine play, with Andrew Murray to the fore, resulted in Belgian going over for a try which he duly converted.

Just to show how much he enjoys playing against Blaydon Belgian then kicked another penalty to claim all 22 points in what was a sound team performance in Tyne's last match of the season.

Tynedale 10 v Fylde 23 (League Match)

(Half Time 3-3)

Fortune didn't favour Tynedale as an already depleted side lost three further players through injury. Nevertheless Fylde won the match in the first half when a slow Tynedale start meant we were unable to take advantage of a favourable stiff breeze. Ill discipline also cost Tynedale dearly and on several occasions we managed to upset the referee - we need to understand that even the most inept referees need to be treat with respect.

An early Fylde drop goal after only four minutes was just reward for a positive start by Fylde with Phil Belgian equalising shortly afterwards with a penalty. Tyne lost Tom Wilkinson when he crashed into the advertising boardings and generally failed to gain any foothold on a disjointed first half.

Guy Beamont went off at half time with a groin injury meaning Tyne had to further reshuffle with key flanker Grant Rastall in the backs. As often happens Tyne looked a far better side in the second period although a good Fylde move resulted in a converted try after only four minutes and they then kicked a penalty to give them a 13-3 lead. Tyne battled away but then lost Andrew Robson with a broken leg causing further disruption.

Nigel Watson was unlucky to be denied a try when the Ref deemed a Fylde player had touched the ball down first but then a fine bit of play resulted in Jake White scoring a try - Belgian converting to bring the scored to 10-13.

Tynedale then for the first time in the match looked the likely winners as there makeshift team pressed the visitors line. Unfortunately for the home side as the match entered stoppage time a determined Tyne attack in the visitors 22 resulted in the ball going loose, allowing the full back to run 75 yards for the try. With Tyne playing "catch up" they conceded a penalty deep into stoppage time allowing Fylde to win by what was perhaps a flattering margin.

TEAM: T Wilkinson (K Dungait), M Lytollis, P Mooney, J White, G Beaumont (S Johnson), P Belgian, E Holmes, A Johnson, E Parker (A Charlton), P Southern, K Johnson, G Smith, A Robson (N Watson), A Murray, G Rastall Reps: K Dungait, N Watson, E Parker, S Johnson Scorers: White - try, Belgian - conv,pen

Liverpool St Helens 10 v Tynedale 24 (League Match)

(Half Time 5-19)

In a match played in a gale force wind Tynedale produced a performance of true grit and fully merited their convincing victory.

Tynedale were asked to play with the gale in the first half but found themselves 5-0 down after only five minutes when LSH scored following a lineout catch and drive. The kicking of Phil Belgian then became critical as Tynedale capitalised on the elements to good effect with Belgian converting three penalties within a 10 minute period, including two massive efforts from his own half. On 23 minutes a chip from Paul Mooney gave Grant Rastall the opportunity to demonstrate his pace and when he was obstructed the ref had no hesitation in awarding a penalty try to make it 16-5. A further Belgian penalty made the score 19-5 at the interval.

Liverpool scored an unconverted try early in the second half but then the Tyne pack took control and dominated the much larger Liverpool pack to good effect. Liverpool never really looked like getting back into the game and full back Jack Smales scored a further try on the hour for Tynedale to seal a well deserved win.

TEAM: G Beaumont, J Smales, P Mooney, T Wilkinson, J Mock, P Belgian, E Holmes, A Johnson, A Charlton (E Parker), P Southern, K Johnson, S Turnbull, A Robson, A Murray, G Rastall Reps: K Dungait, N Watson, E Parker, S Johnson Scorers: Smales - try, Penalty Try, Belgian - conv, 4 pens

Tynedale 20 v New Brighton 16 (League Match)

(Half Time 0-16)

Tynedale performed their own version of the 'Great Escape' to come back from a 16 points half time deficit to snatch victory at the death. Ironically this match reversed events in the first match between these sides earlier in the season when Tynedale lead by 17-3 only to end up as the losers.

New Brighton were much the better side in the opening half as they outplayed a lack lustre home side in most phases and thoroughly deserved their 16-0 interval lead - scoring a converted try and 3 penalties.

Struggling to keep in the match in the first half Tynedale were lifted early in the second when Phil Belgian converted a monster penalty form 5 metres inside his own half. Tynedale's play, although not brilliant, was a transformation from the first half and two further Belgian penalties narrowed the gap. With 10 minutes of normal time remaining Tom Wilkinson sped onto a Jake White kick through to get the try to bring the scored to 14-16 . Belgian missed the "critical conversion" but more than made amends with a winning drop goal with only 2 minutes of normal time remaining.

The ref then played a remarkable 12 minutes of stoppage time during which Belgian kicked his fourth penalty leaving an impressive New Brighton side wondering how it had all gone so wrong.

TEAM: P Belgian, T Wilkinson, P Mooney, P Boston, G Beaumont, J White, E Holmes, A Johnson(D Herdman), E Parker (A Charlton), P Southern, K Johnson, S Turnbull, A Robson, J Murray, G Rastall (A Murray) Reps: B Duncan, D Herdman, A Charlton, A Murray Scorers: Wilkinson - try, Belgian - drop goal, 4 pens

Tynedale 13 v Waterloo 18 (League Match)

(Half Time 7-8)

Tynedale gave champions-elect Waterloo their second hard match in the space of four weeks but were once again made to settle for second best.

Tyne gave Waterloo a few frights and indeed led the visitors for large periods of the match but it was Waterloo who scored the crucial scores at the critical points of the match.

Waterll opened the scoring after 20 minutes when their flanker charged down a clearance kick to score. The visitors continued to press but their confident style of play cost them when a floated pass was intercepted in his own 22 by Guy Beaumont who raced away to score - Phil Belgian converting.

On the stroke of half time a Waterloo penalty gave them a narrow 8-7 advantage.

A Belgian penalty early in the second half gave Tyne a 10-8 lead but after 64 minutes Waterloo worked the ball well from a scrum to score wide out. Tyne were not going to give up easily and another Belgian penalty quickly brought the scores level.

Waterloo then scored the decisive try when again they worked their winger in at the corner.

TEAM: P Belgian, B Duncan (T Wilkinson), P Mooney, P Boston, G Beaumont, J White, E Holmes, A Johnson, E Parker (A Charlton), P Southern, K Johnson, S Turnbull, A Robson, J Murray, A Murray (G Rastall) Reps: T Wilkinson, N Watson, A Charlton, G Rastall Scorers: Beaumont - try, Belgian - conv, 2 pens

Tynedale 3 v Halifax 14 (League Match)

(Half Time 3-11)

Tynedale lost out to league leaders Halifax in a close match in which Halifax always held the edge and Tynedale at times looked a little jaded.

The match opened brightly with both sides moving the ball around but it was Halifax who got the early score with a penalty after 11 minutes. Halifax missed out on a couple of opportunities to exploit an overlap but Tynedale's defence held firm.

The match took an unexpected turn after 15 minutes when Andrew Murray was yellow carded for something which to most observers didnt even look like an offence. Halifax capitalised with a vital try after 21 minutes but again Tynedale can feel slightly aggrieved as the touch down looked more than dubious.

Although Tynedale seemed to be at the rough end of some "odd" decisions by the referee it was Halifax who looked the stronger and they extended their lead with a second penalty after 34 minutes.

Tynedale rallied before half time and Andrew Murray kicked a fine penalty but failed with another right on the break after the ref had shown a yellow card to the Halifax winger.

The second half started badly for Tynedale with Halifax kicking a penalty after 3 minutes. What had started as a fine match now sadly deteriorated into a stop start afair as the ref decided Paul Mooney was worthy of a yellow card. Tynedale battled hard but a strong Halifax defence didnt budge and they held out for a deserved win. What a shame that what had began as a bright lively game of rugby had been unnecessarily spoiled by a series of the dreaded yellow cards - the players and the spectators deserved better!

TEAM: T Wilkinson, B Duncan, P Mooney(S Johnson), P Boston, G Beaumont (M Bolam), J White, E Holmes, A Johnson (J Williams), A Charlton (E Parker), P Southern, K Johnson, S Turnbull, A Robson, J Murray, A Murray Reps: M Bolam, J Williams, E Parker, S Johnson Scorers: A Murray - pen

Sat 7th February 2004

Waterloo 11 v Tynedale 3 (League Match)

(Half Time 5-3)

Tynedale gave champions-elect Waterloo a close match but failed to take several chances which may have forced a shock result.

Tyne played with the elements in the first half and Andrew Murray kicked an early penalty. Several chances critically went abegging to increase the lead and Waterloo came back strongly in the period before half time and scored a try wide out giving the home side a narrow interval advantage.

Tyne refused to be steamrolled in the second period and matched Waterloo in most departments. Both teams failed to capitalise on try-scoring opportunities but Waterloo converted two late penalties to gain a hard earned victory.

TEAM: T Wilkinson (M Bolam), G Beaumont, P Mooney, P Boston, B Duncan, J White, E Holmes, A Johnson, E Parker (A Charlton), P Southern, K Johnson, A Murray, A Robson, J Murray, S Johnson Reps: M Bolam, N Watson, A Charlton, N Hussain Scorers: A Murray - pen

Tynedale 22 v Dudley Kingswinford 10 (League Match)

(Half Time 7-10 )

Tynedale convincingly won a match played in attrocious conditions despite losing 0-10 in first half stoppage time.

Persistant rain combined with treacherous underfoot conditions to make the match barely playable and as the match progressed it bacame almost impossible to distinguish between the sides despite Tynedale changing into fresh shirts at half time.

Tynedale held the edge throughout with their forward particularly dominant, making extra yards when carrying the ball and knocking DK's forward charges dead in their tracks. It was however in the scrummages where they held the trump card and in conditions where scoring was always going to be difficult it was here that Tynedale held complete dominance.

Tyne had territorial advantage throughout but DK will be regretting missing out on two first half breakaways when on both occasions their winger seemed certain to score only to knock the ball on within 5 metres of the line.

DK took the lead after 10 minutes with a penalty following their first real attack. Andrew Murray missed out with a penalty before DK scored a clever try when their backs kicked the ball behind Tyne's defence for an easy score. With the sore 10-0 down there was a moutain to climb.

Tynedale scored a crucial try 3 minutes into first half stoppage time when DK offended once too often as the home scrum drove for the DK line - the ref awarding a penalty try.

Five minutes into the second half the home scrum once again walked the visitors back over their own line as the visitors scrum disintegrated - Andrew Murray getting the touch down.

Tyne's dominant scrum continued to reap havoc and Ed Holmes scored after 15 minutes and 23 minutes from 5 metre scrum drives. The last 15 minutes became almost farcical as players from both sides scrambled around in a sea of mud .

TEAM: T Wilkinson, G Beaumont, P Mooney, P Boston, B Duncan, J White, E Holmes, A Johnson (N Watson), E Parker (A Charlton), P Southern, K Johnson, S Turnbull, A Robson, A Murray, S Johnson Reps: S Allen, M Bolam, N Watson, A Charlton Scorers: Pen Try, A Murray - try, conv, E Holmes - 2 tries

Macclesfield 26 v Tynedale 17 (League Match)

(Half Time 10-0 )

Tynedale's depleted side were always struggling to get a result but finished the match strongly and scored three tries to Macclesfield's two. Skipper Keith Johnson and last week's debutant Guy Beaumont were added to the team's absentees but the team knuckled down against a big Macclesfield side.

Tyne started well but failed to take their chances, missing several penalties, and Macclesfield started to get a grip on the match with a penalty after 30 minutes. On the stroke of half time the touch judge awarded a try to Macclesfield after the refereee had disallowed it and it was converted from the touch line to transform the score - 0-10 down at half time.

An early second half penalty was quickly followed up by Macclesfiled's second try to make the score 0-20 after only 46 minutes.

Tynedale didn't give up and started to gain momentum with Ben Duncan scoring a try after 56 minutes - converted with an Andrew Murray drop kick. A further Macclesfield penalty was followed by Duncan's second try. Macclesfield then kicked their fourth penalty before Ed Holmes scored a consolation try.

TEAM: T Wilkinson, B Duncan, P Mooney, G Fleming, M Bolam, J White, E Holmes, N Watson (A Johnson), A Charlton (E Parker), P Southern, A Murray, S Turnbull, A Robson, J Murray, S Johnson Reps: S Allen, E Parker, D Herdman, A Johnson Scorers: B Duncan - 2 tries, E Holmes - try, A Murray - conv

Sat 17th January 2004

Tynedale 24 v Preston Grasshoppers 0 (League Match)

(Half Time 11-0 )

Tynedale were comfortable winners in a match played in attrocious conditions with a heavy pitch and with frequent rain and sleet showers throughout the match.

The home side got off to the ideal start with two Andrew Murray penalties within the first four minutes. From then on it looked a long way back for a dispirited looking Hoppers side whose infrequent excursions into Tynedale territory were quickly repelled with apparent ease.

Tynedale continued to have the better of the play but spurned several chances and Murray struck an upright with a penalty before debut boy Guy Beaumont slid over for a try in the last minute of the half.

Tynedale continued to dominate in the second period with their excellent back row seeming able to make ground through the heart of the Hoppers defence almost at will. Nevertheless there was 30 minutes on the clock in the second period before the next score came with conditions worsening when Murray kicked his third penalty.

The last ten minutes saw Tyne play some bright cohesive rugby and were rewarded with tries from substitute Gary Fleming and Andrew Murray.

TEAM: T Wilkinson, G Beaumont(G Fleming), P Mooney, B Duncan, M Bolam, J White, E Holmes, N Watson (D Herdman), A Charlton (E Parker), P Southern, K Johnson, S Turnbull, A Robson(S Johnson), J Murray, A Murray Reps: G Fleming, E Parker, D Herdman, S Johnson Scorers: J White - pen

Kendal 13 v Tynedale 3 (League Match)

(Half Time 8-0 )

A depleted Tynedale side went down for the second time this season to a well organised Kendal side in a match played in difficult underfoot conditions.

Phil Belgian limped out of the match after 10 minutes and Kendal took advantage with a try and a penalty. Playing into the elements Tynedale lifted their game in the second quarter but didnt take their chances and made too many mistakes.

In the second period Tynedale's line out proved unreliable and although Jake White converted a penalty it was Kendal who extended their lead at the death when the scored from a line-out drive.

TEAM: P Belgian(G Fleming), B Duncan, P Mooney, P Boston, M Bolam, J White, E Holmes, J Williams, E Parker (A Charlton), P Southern, K Johnson, S Turnbull, A Robson, S Johnson, M Clark (C Baty) Reps: G Fleming, C Baty, D Herdman, A Charlton Scorers: J White - pen

Tynedale 19 v Darlington 3 (League Match)

(Half Time 12-3 )

After three successive home defeats Tynedale returned to winning ways, overcoming Darlington in difficult underfoot conditions.

The early exchanges were even, with both sides making handling errors. After Darlington had been denied by a forward pass Tyne opened the scoring after 23 minutes when Ed Holmes made a fine break from half way and timed his pass to perfection to give Phil Belgian the opportunity to show he is no slouch as he raced away from the visiting defence.

A couple of minutes later Belgian became the provider as his fine pass put away Ben Duncan for the second try. Darlington hit back with a penalty after 36 minutes and in the dying minutes of the first half applied pressure on the Tynedale line but failed to score although Andrew Robson was yellow carded.

The second half started the way the first had ended and Tynedale were reduced to 13 men when Paul Mooney joined Robson in the sin bin.

Against 13 men Darlington messed up several opportunites as Tynedale defended bravely and skillfully. Restored to 15 men Tynedale then came back into the match and finished the stronger with Paul Mooney scoring a well worked try after good play from Andrew Murray, Paul Boston and Jake White.

Sat 20th December 2003

Tynedale 13 v Darlington MP 14 (League Match)

(Half Time 7-11 )

Tynedale slid to their their successive home defeat in a close match played out in difficult underfoot conditions but can justifiably feel that they had done enough to deserve victory.

Tyne got off to a slow start and Park capitalised on a Tyne mistake to kick a penalty after only 3 minutes. At this stage Tynedale were having difficuly getting out of their own half and Park kicked a second penalty after 10 minutes.

Things looked really bleak when after 20 minutes a Tynedale attack was penalised and Park set up the chance for their big forwards to maul Tyne back over their own line for an unconverted try.

This signalled a period of Tynedale dominance although Phil Belgian missed with three penalties - striking the upright with two. The final Belgian penalty on the stoke of half time did however result in a Paul Mooney try after the ball had been regathered off the post and Andrew Murray and made a strong run towards the posts. This left the scores 7-11 at the interval.

The third quarter was again all Tynedale and Belgian kicked two out of three penalties to give Tynedale a one point advantage with 20 minutes to play. Park then had a ten minute period in the Tynedale half which ended when the touchjudge spotted a Tyne player in an offside position which resulted in a successful penalty conversion.

The last 10 minutes was all Tynedale but somehow Park held out despite Grant Rastall being over the line twice in the dying minutes. The first opportunity was denied by some desparate defending whilst on the second occasion, following a Jonny Wilkinson style crossfield kick from Jake White, both sets of players saw a definite score but unfortunately for Tyne the 'eagle-eyed' touchjudge, who'd had a very influential game, thought he had seen a knock on somewhere!

TEAM: P Belgian, B Duncan, P Mooney, B Hills, P Boston, J White, E Holmes, J Williams (R Parker), A Charlton (E Parker), P Southern, K Johnson, S Turnbull (A Johnson), A Robson, A Murray, G Rastall Reps: T Wilkinson, R Parker, A Johnson, E Parker Scorers: P Mooney - try, P Belgian - conv, 2 pens

Blaydon 15 v Tynedale 23 (League Match)

(Half Time 6-0 )

Tynedale gave a good team performance to halt their recent poor results and gain a fine victory over confident neighbours Blaydon.

Contending with a difficult crosswind both sides had their periods of ascendency in a fluctuating match but it was Tynedale who took their chances whilst Blaydon were unable to breach the well disciplined Tyne defence.

A tight first half ended with Blaydon 6-0 ahead, converting two penalties against a Phil Belgian miss and Blaydon extended their lead early in the second half with their third successful penalty. Belgian got Tynedale on the scoreboard shortly afterwards with the first of his succesful penalties.

A fine individual break from Jamie Murray resulted in the first try of the match with 20 minutes remaining - Belgian converting from wide out to give Tyne a one point lead.

The next 10 minutes saw the lead changing hands with both sides kicking two penalties apiece leaving the score at 15-16 to Tynedale as the clock ticked into stoppage time. Drama then unfolded in the second minute of stoppage time when a potentially winning Blaydon drop goal was charged down by Paul Monney. The excellent Grant Rastall seized on the loose ball and sprinted away before feeding the supporting Barry Hills who crossed under the posts - Belgian converted to crown an excellect vistory.

TEAM: P Belgian, B Duncan, P Mooney, B Hills, P Boston, J White, E Holmes, R Parker, A Charlton (E Parker), P Southern, K Johnson, A Murray, A Robson (S Turnbull), J Murray, G Rastall Reps: T Wilkinson, D Herdman, S Turnbull, E Parker Scorers: J Murray - try, B Hills - try, P Belgian - 2 conv, 3 pens

Sat 6th December 2003

Darlington 19 v Tynedale 12 (League Match)

(Half Time 14-7 )

Another disappointing defeat for Tynedale who once again failed to capitalise on their periods of dominance and conceded three tries to a resurgent Darlington side.

Tynedale certainly looked the better side in the opening 20 minutes but had to be content with three Phil Belgian penalties. Remarkably the match turned after a Darlington played was yellow carded -Darlington scoring two converted tries when down to 14 men to gain a 5 point half time advantage.

Darlington were in a purple patch and scored their third try shortly after the interval to stretch their lead. Belgian was not having a brilliant day with his kicking and missed three kickable penalties. Tynedale upped their play and had the better of the last 20 minutes but a combination of anxiety and poor judgement ensured that Darlington held out.

TEAM: T Wilkinson, B Duncan, P Mooney, B Hills, P Boston, P Belgian, E Holmes, R Parker, E parker, P Southern, K Johnson, S Turnbull, A Robson, A Murray, G Rastall Reps: M Bolam, D Herdman, S Johnson, A Charlton Scorers: P Belgian - 3 pens

Sat 29th November 2003

Tynedale 5 v Kendal 10 (League Match)

(Half Time 0-7 )

Tynedale lost their second successive home match in a dour encounter during which both sides rarely looked like scoring in poor conditions.

Tynedale played against a strong wind in the first half and largely dominated possession although on the few situations when they looked close to scoring they gave penalties away. Kendal were unable to put any pressure on the Tyne defence although they scored what turned out to be a critical try after only 7 minutes when they won a penalty, kicked it into touch and eventually scored from the ensuing line-out/drive. The conversion was successful.

Yet again Tynedale fell foul of the referee, being penalised twice for crooked feeds at the scrum and several times for offences around the tackle when in promising positions. By comparison Kendal defended stoutly and were virtually penalty-free in a match where unusually, like the World Cup Final, both sides were never deemed to be offside.

Having faced a strong wind in the first half and generally looked the better side Tyne must have been confident at the interval but any optimism was unfounded as the Kendal defence repelled Tynedale attacks which were increasingly lacking ideas and dynamism as every ball won seemed slow and ponderous.

Unfortunately for Tyne the wind dropped significantly in the second period and even began to change directions. The inevitable happened midway through the second period when Kendal converted a penalty when a rare intrusion into Tynedale's half was almost immediately rewarded with a penalty.

Tynedale were becoming more and more dispirited although with 5 minutes to go their persistence was rewarded when Alistair Johnson drove over for a score.

TEAM: J White, B Duncan, P Mooney, B Hills, P Boston, P Belgian, E Holmes, R Parker, A Charlton (E Parker), P Southern, K Johnson, A Murray, A Robson (A Johnson), J Murray, G Rastall Reps: R Windle, N Watson, A Johnson, E Parker Scorers: A Johnson - try

Preston Grasshoppers 14 v Tynedale 16 (League Match)

(Half Time 0-6 )

Tynedale had to defend strongly during the opening 15 minutes but this time we held strong and didn't concede early points. Eventually Tyne came into the game as an attacking force and Phil Belgian marked his return to the side with two long range penalties from half way to give Tynedale a 6-0 interval lead.

After the break Preston scored a fine individual try before Belgian kicked another penalty to make the scoreline 9-5. Preston, however, began to exert pressure and were rewarded with 3 penalties in the space of 15 minutes to give them a 14-9 lead.

Tynedale didnt capitalise on the scoring opportunies they had until the dying minutes when Ben Duncan made a typically aggressive run through the middle of the home side to score under the posts, Belgian converting to take victory.

An excellent victory in what was at times a scrappy match.

Tynedale 21 v Macclesfield 25 (League Match)

(Half Time 11-10 )

Tynedale gave a disappointing performance, never able to master a disciplined Maclesfield side, the elements or the referee.

Tynedale played with a stiff breeze in their favour in the first half but yet again they conceded early scores with Macclesfield scoring two tries in the opening 12 minutes, both from line out situations.

Tyne hit back with a try by Rowan Brown who unfortunately was then carried off with a foot injury. Two Andrew Murray penalties edged Tynedale ahead but a single point lead at half time didnt really look sufficient.

Tynedale started the second half well however and Paul Mooney crossed for a try after only three minutes following some slick handling. The ref then took centre stage as he penalised the home side for a wide variety of infringements and also sent Jamie Murray to the sin bin. Macclesfield capitalised and kicked their way into a 25 -16 lead. Ben Duncan did score a consolation try for Tynedale but by then the damage had been done.

Sat 8th November 2003

Dudley Kingswinford 19 v Tynedale 32 (League Match)

(Half Time 19-10 )

An excellent away victory for Tynedale who fell 0-19 behind after only 20 minutes but then went on to win, scoring five tries in the process with the pack generally on top and the backs displaying a fine cutting edge.

Tyne had to defend in the opening exchanges and fell behind after only 6 minutes when a DK move from half way resulted in a score wide out. Tynedale then came strongly into the game and were pressurising the Dudley line when a move broke down and Dudley swept the full length of the field for a fine try.

Tyne came back again but just when it semed a score seemed inevitable a loose pass was intercepted in the home 22 for another breakaway home score.

Tynedale never let their heads go down and their spirit and play were eventually rewarded when Jamie Murray scored a try in the corner after a fine Paul Boston break. Just before half time Tynedale scored again when some slick forward play was followed by a powerful break from Boston to bring the sores to 10-19 at the interval.

Andrew Murray kicked an early second half penalty but DK then had their best territorial period with Tynedale having to demostrate their defensive prowess. After 55 minutes Tyne took the lead when a strong Rowan Brown break created the opportunity for Ed Holmes to score, Andrew Murray converting to give Tyne a one point lead.

DK still attacked but Tynedale always looked the more dangerous side and after 76 minutes another fine handling move resulted in a try for Jack Smales. The match was sealed in the dying minutes when the back row seized on a DK error to create a chance for Ben Duncan which he took in fine fashion.

TEAM: T Wilkinson E Holmes, P Mooney, P Boston, B Duncan, J Smales, K Dungait, R Parker, A Charlton, P Southern, A Murray, S Turnbull(S Johnson), R Brown, J Murray(P Hudson), G Rastall Reps: G Fleming, B Milburn, S Johnson, P Hudson Scorers: Boston - try, J Murray - try, Holmes - try, Smales - try, Duncan - try, A Murray - 2 conv, pen

Halifax 32 v Tynedale 22 (League Match)

(Half Time 14-10 )

Halifax took an early lead through a penalty but Tyne quickly rsponded and were rewarded when Andrew Murray converted a penalty. Halifax then kicked their second penalty before Tyne took the lead for the only time of the match when strong forward play resulted in Paul boston crossing - Murray converting.

Halifax pressure resulted in their first try to give them a one point lead and a further penalty right on half time increased their lead.

Tynedale had a run in with the ref in the second period and lost first Ed Holmes and then Paul Mooney to the sin bin. The first period of playing with 14 men proved too much and Halifax crossed for two tries to give them a clear lead.

With 15 men back on the field Tyne scored two good tries through Jamie Murray and Tom Wilkinson but by then the damage had been done in a match during which we failed to capitalise on enough of our chances.

TEAM: T Wilkinson B Duncan, P Mooney, B Hills, P Boston, J White, E Holmes, J Williams, E Parker (A Charlton), P Southern, A Murray, S Turnbull, R Brown, J Murray, G Rastall Reps: K Dungait, R Parker, A Charlton, P Hudson Scorers: Boston - try, J Murray - try, Wilkinson - try, A Murray - 2 conv, pen

Sat 18th October 2003

Tynedale 34 v Longton 20 (League Match)

(Half Time 14-8 )

Tynedale ended up comfortable winners in a disappointingly dour encounter. The highlight of the match was undoubtedly the performance of Jamie Murray who took over the goal kicking duties in the absence of brother Andrew and Phil Belgian. Jamie gave an excellent all round performance - scoring 29 of Tynedale's 34 points.

Tynedale started well and went into a 11-0 lead through two Murray penalties and a Murray try when a Longton line out went sadly wrong. Perhaps put off by the 'ease' of the opening period Tynedale struggled thereafter to reach the level of performance to which they are capable and Longton deservedly forced their way back into the match with a try and a penalty before half time.

An early second half Murray penalty gave Tyne a 9 point lead but the next 30 minutes saw error after error and stoppage after stoppage with neither side troubling the scorer.

Events livened up in the final 10 minutes and it was Longton who sparked the activity by scoring their second try from a lineout maul. Longton at this stage certainly had a spring in their step but Tynedale quickly regained their advantage when Jake White intercepted on half way to score , Murray converting.

A further penalty and a fine individual Murray try, converted by himself from the touchline made the score a flattering 34-13 but Longton had some compensation when in the eighth minute of added time their centre sped over.

New Brighton 28 v Tynedale 20 (League Match)

(Half Time 16-17 )

For the second week running Tynedale were disappointed when they conceded late scores to lose the lead.

Tyne conceded a penalty in the opening minutes but then dominated affairs for 20 minutes - scoring three good tries. Paul Mooney scored the first try, converted by Phil Belgian, and then Ed Holmes finished off a 75 metre flowing move. A lineout move resulted in Rowan Brown crossing to give Tynedale a 17-3 advantage.

New Brighton, however, came back strongly before half time with two penalties and a converted try right on the stroke of half time.

Tynedale totally dominated proceeding in the third quarter but only managed a penalty from Belgian. They then paid the price for their inability to 'cash in' when New Brighton scored two tries in the last ten minutes to take the spoils.

Nuneaton 23 v Tynedale 19 (Powergen Cup - 3rd Round)

(Half Time 13-5 )

Tynedale gave a very good performance before going down to a late Nuneaton try.

Tyne started badly and were 0-10 down after only 6 minutes, conceding two unconverted tries. After this disastrous start Tyne showed their quality and looked the better side for long periods of the match. We quickly got back into the match with a well worked try for Jake White and Phil belgian then twice struck the post with penalty attemmpts.

On the stroke of half time Nuneaton converted a penalty to make the interval score 5-13.

A good try from Ben Duncan, converted by Belgian, brought Tyne to within a point but then lost Aaron Charlton to the sin bin and Nuneaton capitalised with another try. With only 9 minutes of normal time remaining a second Duncan try, converted by Belgian, edged Tynedale into the lead for the first time in the match.

The referee then sin binned Grant Rastall and Nuneaton scored the clinching try which gave them a rather fortunate victory.

Tynedale 47 v Liverpool SH 12 (League Match)

(Half Time 9-5)

Tynedale gave an impressive all round display in the demolition of 'much fancied' Liverpool St Helens. On an unusually 'still' day Tynedale had the better early chances. A storming run from Rowan Brown, resulted in the first of Phil Belgian's successful penalties, although Tyne will perhaps be wondering how they failed to capitalise further.

A second Belgian penalty after 9 minutes reflected Tynedale's strong start and a drop goal attempt shortly afterwards drifted narrowly wide. Tynedale continued to look sharp on the break but LSH had their periods of pressure and they were rewarded after 32 minutes when a long period pressing the Tyne try line was rewarded with an unconverted try.

On the stroke of half time Belgian kicked his third penalty to give Tyne some breathing space.

Tynedale started the second half strongly and camped in the LSH 22 for long periods. After 7 minutes the ever present Grant Rastall took a short pass to dart over for a much deserved converted try. Belgian struck the post with a penalty but on 22 minutes a fine attacking thrust inspired by Belgian resulted in Paul Boston crossing for a try.

Tyne were now playing with a degree of freedom and Jamie Murray scored a fine individual try after 27 minutes. Some excellent passing then created the space for Tom Wilkinson to score wide out, Belgian again converting.

LSH came back bravely as full time approached and were rewarded with a converted try but Tynedale were intent on showing their supremacy in this match and Belgian kicked a long range penalty and then skipper Keith Johnson sped over under the posts to seal a fine team performance.

Tynedale 11 v Blaydon 7 (Powergen National Cup - 2nd round)

(Half Time 3-7)

Tynedale held on narrowly aginst neighbours Blaydon in a bruising derby encounter and will now travel to Nuneaton in the third round.

Tyne held the edge in the line outs and in the backs but had to battle hard to contain Blaydon's uncompromising mauling and rucking game. On a greasy surface and in steady rain mistakes from both sides were plentifull throughout the match.

Blaydon scored their only points after only seven minutes following a Barry Hills inspired Tynedale attack. An attacking kick from Tyne bounced kindly for Blaydon winged Duncan who gathered in his own 22 and showed a clean pair of heals to Tyne's despairing defenders.

Phil Belgian was successful with his third penalty attempt shortly before half time to set up an exciting 2nd half.

Tynedale edged ahead early in the second half when Jake White jinked over following good Tynedale pressure. Belgian hit a post with a penalty but was successful on 64 minutes. Both sides had further opportunities but it was blaydon who applied the territorial pressure in the dying minutes and it took an excellent covering tackle from Paul Boston to halt Blaydon's last desparate assault.

Fylde 16 v Tynedale 17 (League Match)

(Half Time 9-0)

A great start to the season with Tyne falling behind in the first half but coming good in the second before having to withstand a nail biting finish.

A Ben Duncan try from 40 metres after 47 minutes put Tynedale on the board for the first time, Andrew Murray converting. A Phil Belgian penalty from half way then gave us a slender advantage which was extended when with 5 minutes to go skipper Keith Johnson scored under the posts, Belgian converting.

Fylde came back however in the dying minutes and scored a try wide out which was converted. Tyne thereafter had to withstand a nervous last few minutes.

Tynedale 41 v Bedford Athletic 31 (after extra time) - 1st Round, Powergen National Cup

(Half Time 16-16, Full Time 26-26)

It took 10 minutes of extra time to separate the two sides with Tynedale coming through as eventual victors. Playing their first full match of the season Tynedale opened brightly and then fell away badly before re-grouping well to dramatically force extra time during which they always held the upperhand.

Tyne started well and Peter Southern almost scored, but from the resultant scrum good pressure on the Bedford put-in allowed Ed Holmes to steal possession and feed debutant Paul Mooney who dived over. Unfortunately for Tyne things then went badly wrong and they played the next 30 minutes without the ball as they conceded a string of penalties and free kicks and also lost Jamie Murray to the sin bin as they incurred the wrath of the referee.

Bedford steadly worked their way back into the game and kicked two penalties before pressure on the Tyne line resulted in a converted try. This was quickly followed by their third successful penalty to give them a healthy 16-7 lead.

Tynedale did however start to resolve matters in the period before half time and good pressure resulted in a charge down and try for debutant prop Johnny Williams. This was quickly followed by an Andrew Murray penalty to give Tyne a slender 17-16 half time advantage.

Bedford scored a converted try early in the second half but Murray quickly levelled matters with two penalties. With 15 minutes remaining Bedford kicked a penalty to go ahead. Tynedale then steadily increased the pressure but Bedford hung on until deep into stoppage time when after a series of 5 metre scrums and players being held up over the line Jake White dropped a goal to square the scores.

Tynedale were now in the ascendency and Bedford's cause was not helped by the loss of a player into the sin bin. Playing into a strengthening breeze Jamie Murray crossed for a try after a Barry Hills break. A well worked try for Paul Boston at the start of the second period of extra time gave Tyne a convincing lead and a Murray penalty shortly afterwards effectively sealed the match although Bedford broke through for a concolation score right on the final whistle.
