Stuart Thygeson Enevoldson ("Ene") - 18th August 1988
The season was overshadowed by the deaths of seven stalwarts of the club - and in particular the loss of STUART THYGESON ENEVOLDSON on the 18th August 1988. At a small ceremony in January 1989 the contribution which Ene had made to the club during his years as player, committee member, Hon. Secretary and President, were acknowledged by the unveiling of a plaque indicating that the President's room was in future to be known as the "Enevoldson Room".
John Alan Clark, T.D., F.R.S.A - 8th September 1988
Donald Brown - 17th September 1988
John Donald Hope, MA - 27th October 1988
Eric Robson - 7th November 1988
Arthur Bain - 17th January 1989
Andrew Taylor - 21st April 1989
The playing record of all the senior sides was excellent throughout the season - as good as any in living memory. However, the 1st XV failed to gain promotion by a whisker - ending second in the league to Kendal.
The 1st XV lost to Northern 24 - 16 in a replay after a drawn 12 - 12 game in the final of the Northumberland Senior Cup.
Dismissal from the Pilkington Cup at the hands of Hereford, away, was a disappointment.
Although all four senior sides reached their respective County cup-finals, only the 2nd XV were successful. They had a fine season, losing only 3 of their 32 matches and winning the J & B Journal league with 18 wins from 19 games and winning the J & B Journal Team of the Season award.
11 players gained representative honours for Northumberland; 4 for Northumberland B.
Gordon Dodd captained both the Scottish Universities and British Universities' teams.
No players were sent off in the season.
John Fletcher won the David Matthews Colt of the Year trophy.
In July 1998 the constitution of the club was changed - firstly to create a post of Club Chairman, and secondly to take advantage of the Licensing Act 1988 by extending the permitted hours for the supply of intoxicants.
Subscriptions for full members were raised to £28 from 1st May 1989.
The club was shocked to hear of the horrific injuries sustained by the Membership Secretary, Grenville Harris, in a car accident.
