Jonny at Tynedale Park

Friday 22nd July 2011 was a day never to be forgotten for three North-East children when they attended a two hour long kicking coaching session hosted by Jonny Wilkinson at Tynedale Park. The special event, which was shrouded in secrecy, was held to help raise money for the NSPCC, for whom Jonny is a celebrity ambassador.

Working in the Community

Although we have a Senior rugby team which plays at National One level, this club is regarded as very much a Community club.

We make a significant contribution to the local community, not just in sport, but through the numerous other non-sporting activities which also use the facilities at Tynedale Park.

To help to ensure the growth and development of rugby the club finances the employment of Scott Powell,a Community Rugby Coach who, with additional coaching support, works in 39 schools in this area - 3 High Schools, 11 Middle Schools and 25 First Schools. They have structured coaching programmes, they work with youngsters with special needs and disadvantaged groups, and they hold rugby Festivals and extended evening coaching sessions and workshops.

Our mini-junior section provides coaching and matches at Tynedale Park for about 370 boys and girls aged between 7 and 15 years of age, using 70 volunteer coaches and helpers from the local area. We also have 4 adult teams, 2 junior boys teams and 2 teams for girls.

Corbridge Junior Football Club, who have used our pitches and facilities for many years, run 14 teams from under-8's to under-17's and have 30 local coaches to look after 270 youngsters (240 boys and 30 girls).

We have offered the newly-formed Corbridge Tennis Club space to develop their club for adults and children and they will lease part of our grounds for that purpose.

Apart from sports we also host three Car Shows and Rallies, the Northumberland County Agricultural Show, a Traction Rally and Wine and Beer Festivals. We offer the use of our grounds to the local Playgroup - so we cater for a wide range of interests and ages.

Most of these events raise substantial amounts of money to support local charities, like the Charlotte Straker Home in Corbridge, Hexham Priory School, Tynedale Talking Newspaper and Tynedale Hospice at Home, as well as national charities like Help the Heroes, McMillan Nurses, Epilepsy Action, Chin-up a respite home for children, and Minerva, which provides training and opportunities for people with disabilities, Pulmonary Hypertension, North Air Ambulance, Children's Cancer Research, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Percy Hedley Special School, Royal British Legion and Lifespan.

As a Community Club, we believe we provide enjoyment for local people and for the wider community on whom, of course, we rely for support.

The 'Tesco Great School Run' is a mass particiaption event held across the UK between May 9th and 22nd July 2011. The run is a 2k fun run for schools across the UK encouraging children, family, friends and teachers to take part in exercise for fun, and to help make physical activity part of each school’s and every family’s lifestyle.

Quote from Douglas Hamilton (Chief Executive, Tynedale RFC:-

“As Chief Executive of Tynedale Rugby Football Club I am delighted that we have been invited to host the Tesco Great School Run at Tynedale Park on the 17th. May 2011. As a club we already have close links with primary and middle schools in the Tynedale district through our Community Rugby Coaching scheme, so we are pleased to be able to extend a welcome to other primary and middle schools in Northumberland for this worthwhile event”.

Planning Permission

The club has applied for planning permission to replace the redundant scout hut on Stanners Lane, north west corner of Tynedale Park, with a two-storey family dwelling.

Local residents have been canvassed for their opinions and were invited to attend a display and consultation evening which was held at the club on Thursday evening, 16th September 2010. A pre-application enquiry has been raised with the planning authority.

Funding Sub-Committee

The Club has set up a special Funding sub-committee under the chairmanship of Tony Coates to look at two main topics - firstly the funding of anticipated losses in the next two seasons resulting from the RFU's withdrawal of much of the funding of National Leagues Rugby, and secondly to investigate the steps which are needed to try to secure the long-term financial future of Tynedale RFC.

We are trying to avoid the financial problems suffered by many other rugby union clubs, resulting in the demise of clubs like Mounts Bay and the difficulties encountered by Manchester, London Welsh, Birmingham Solihull, etc

Tynedale - the most idyllic sporting venue in the country?

John Inverdale, writing in the Telegraph, has suggested that Tynedale could be a serious contender for the title of 'most idyllic sporting venue in the country'.

In his piece, where he acknowledges our promotion to National Division Two, he talks about our 'spectacular Northumberland home', describes our location as 'this glorious part of the North-East' and rightly points out that we are just a few miles from the geographical centre of Great Britain.

Things are really looking good!

DEATHS

Colin White

Sadly Colin died on Wednesday 19th January 2011 - he went peacefully, pain free and he looked strong right to the end. Colin was never a member of Tynedale (although he did once play for our Veterans) but lived locally and was a true legend who influenced so many people and will never be forgotten.

A Memorial Service was held at Hexham Abbey with over 500 people attending.
