Rosslyn Park kicked off into a brisk wind on a bright, sunny, cold day. They were first to put points on the board when the visitors were penalised 23 metres from their line, just to the left of their posts. Fly half, Ross Laidlaw, kicked the goal and Park led 3–0 with seven minutes played.
Three minutes later Tyne were awarded a free kick for a scrummage offence. Sam Shires quickly taken restart resulted in a penalty kick for Tynedale when Rosslyn Park were penalised for going over the top at a ruck. Gavin Beasley had no trouble converting the relatively easy penalty and scores were level at 3–3.
After the home side had successfully recycled the ball several times centre, Steve Parsons, was through to score a try ten metres from the left hand touchline on 20 minutes. Laidlaw missed the conversion as it curled away in front of the posts to put the home side ahead by 8–3.
Two minutes later, Tyne were awarded a penalty twelve metres into the Park half and in the centre of the field, but Tynedale elected to kick for touch and found touch 20 metres from the line. This eventually led to a Tyne lineout five metres from the line. In a rehearsed lineout move the ball was thrown to the back of the line, the ball was tapped down and the receiver attempted to dart through the line. Tynedale nearly made it to the line on three occasions and it only ended when a stray pass was thrown to the ground ten metres short.
On 31 minutes Tynedale captain, Grant Beasley, was given a Yellow Card after infringing at a ruck. Laidlaw converted the easy kick and Park led 11–3. From the kick off three Tynedale defenders missed tackles on winger, John Rudd, leading to a penalty five metres into the Tyne half. The penalty was kicked to touch which led to further pressure on the Tynedale line. Five minutes later after further recycling of the ball from the Rosslyn Park forwards and backs, flanker, Joe Trayfoot, scored a try one metre from the left hand touchline. Laidlaw failed with the conversion and Park led 16–3 with four minutes left.
Two minutes later, Tynedale were awarded a penalty that was kicked to touch five metres from the opposition’s line. Following three attacks on the Park line the ball was unfortunately knocked on leading to a scrum five for the home pack.
Winger, Matthew Horrocks, broke down the left wing where he fed centre,Tom Bramwell, who passed onto winger, Peter Cole, the resulting ruck was won and the ball was spread across the field to lock, Graeme Dunn, and who was on the wing, but Sam Shires, who gleefully dotted the ball down over the line five metres from touch. Beasley missed the difficult conversion. That left the half time score 16–8 to Rosslyn Park.
Tynedale won possession from the kick off and almost immediately were awarded a penalty five metres into the Park half. Beasley kicked the penalty to touch in the Rosslyn Park twenty two, the visitors won the resulting line out, a rolling maul ensured, and after three attempts on the home line Tynedale were awarded a try. The announcer mistakenly awarded it to David Dickinson but Stephen Ridley assured me, on the journey back, it was he who had scored it! Beasley missed the difficult kick into the wind spraying across the front of the posts. It was game on, with Tyne just three points adrift with the score at 16–13 on 43 minutes.
Five minutes later Rosslyn Park were penalised for coming at the side of a maul inside their twenty two and a quickly taken penalty by scrum half Dominic Shaw saw Shires go over for his second try under the posts, Beasley added the extra points and Tyne led for the first time in the game with the score 16–20.
With 52 minutes played Tyne scored their fourth try. Shires made the hard yards, beginning on the half way line and ending up 20 metres into the Park half, from the ruck the ball was spread across the posts to find Peter Cole in space on the right wing and he quickly ran in to score a try 15 metres from the touch line. The strength of the wind meant Beasley’s conversion attempt floated across the face of the posts, leaving the score 16–25.
Four minutes later Tynedale scored their fifth try. Tyne were awarded a penalty five metres into the Rosslyn Park twenty two, Beasley kicked the ball to touch ten metres short of the home line. Tynedale won the resultant line out and after a series of driving mauls Richard Boyle got the touchdown ten metres from the right hand touch line. Beasley compensated for the wind and added the extra points. That made the score 16–32!
On 72 minutes Tynedale were penalised for coming in from the side, Park realised they had an opportunity to reduce the deficit and it took brave defending from the visitors to repel the onslaught. Jonathan Cousin replaced Stuart Johnson. Two minutes later Richard Miller replaced Dunn.
With two minutes left of the half, Rosslyn Park knocked on 15 metres into their half, Boyle who had been complaining of a dead leg to coach Tom Borthwick, was presented with the ball and showed no evidence of the complaint when he galloped 35 metres to the line! Beasley failed to add the extras and Tynedale had a memorable win at 23–37 under their belts!
The first 21 minutes of the second half were the finest performance I have witnessed, at home or away, from Tyne in over 22 years, and it was against a side with the second best defensive record in the league!
This is the official Match Report from Rosslyn Park;
Despite fielding similar personnel, this was not the Rosslyn Park team that performed so heroically at Jersey the previous weekend. Perhaps the physical and emotional toll of that supreme effort taxed Park’s part-timers more than was obvious at the time, because the tank looked decidedly empty here.
The afternoon started well enough for the home side. Playing into the teeth of a strong blustery wind, they soon won a penalty, which was kicked to touch but they were unable to profit. However, they soon won another penalty, this time in front of the posts, for Ross Laidlaw to put them 3-0 ahead on 10 minutes.
Two minutes later Tynedale fly half Gavin Beasley equalised with a penalty of his own, but despite the wind Park looked the better side with some incisive attacking play. A John Rudd run through the middle was stopped but Park were able to spin the ball wide and Steve Parsons ran in a good try for 8-3 on 21 minutes. Laidlaw’s conversion attempt looked right on target until blown off course.
Park were immediately back at the opposition and Tynedale forced to resort to extra-legal methods, resulting in the loss of flanker Grant Beasley to the sin bin. Park tried to press home their consequent advantage but obdurate defence saw them claim only a Laidlaw penalty towards the end of Beasley’s “sentence”, which increased the lead to 11-3.
Despite having the worst of the elements, Park looked in no trouble and put together some good attacks, eventually seeing flanker Joe Trayfoot go in for a try out wide. Such was the influence of the wind, however, that a kicker of Laidlaw’s pedigree simply could not reach the posts.
With the last move of the match Tynedale had a really concentrated attack, finally spreading the ball for number 8 Sam Shires to gallop over, his score making it 16-8 at the interval. With Park about to enjoy the apparent advantage of conditions in the second half, it looked more like a death rattle than a warning. Which shows how wrong you can be.
Tynedale were now forced to play close-contact “up your jumper” stuff, and proved very good at it. Park kicked off deep into visiting territory, which was the last they saw of the ball. A succession of pick-and-drives and close passes saw Tynedale work the ball to half way, where they won a penalty, kicked to touch and drove over courtesy of prop David Dickinson, leaving Park to kick off again at 16-13.
Tynedale’s ball retention was superb, and whatever latent threat Park’s backs might have presented was rendered ineffective without the ball. Again Tynedale made steady progress into the home 22 where they won a penalty, and a quick-witted tap saw full-back Hamish Smales go in by the posts to give his side the lead for the first time, Beasley’s conversion making it 16-20.
If that looked bad for Park, worse was to come four minutes later when Tynedale mounted a super attack up their left past a couple of tired tackles and quickly flashed the ball across for winger Peter Cole to claim a good try for 16-25, and bring up the 4-try bonus.
Park were still unable to wrest any worthwhile possession from their eager opponents, who were supplying a text book lesson on how to prevail with a limited game in these particular conditions. Back in the home 22, they were again rewarded with a penalty, kicked to touch. The drive that took lock Richard Boyle over seemed a tad too easy for the comfort of home supporters. Beasley’s conversion brought up 16-32 with 20 minutes remaining.
Park really did try to pull it back. A good move took them to the visitors’ line but, just as a score looked likely, they were frustrated by conceding a penalty. Back they came and were rewarded with a penalty just outside the 22. Laidlaw hammered it to touch and Park drove over, prop Lorne Ward the scorer. Laidlaw’s conversion left them to score ten points with 12 minutes remaining in order to turn things round.
Park gave it their best shot, immediately returning to the attack, forcing a further penalty, again hoofed to touch. Camped on the line, all things looked possible as Tynedale defended desperately but, again, as they sought to probe for another opening they conceded a penalty.
Tynedale managed to work the ball to the Rosslyn Park 22 for the final proof that somehow the Rugby Gods had been offended. It would have been bad enough for a defender to have knocked on, but for the ball to conveniently fall conveniently to visiting lock Boyle to allow him to lope in for his second try seemed somehow a bit too cruel. At 23-37 Park’s goose was not so much cooked as completely frazzled. Playing for pride alone, Park managed a last incursion into the Tynedale 22 but when the visitors secured the ball they had no hesitation in wellying it out over their own goal line to bring a win they probably did not anticipate. It would be wrong to be too harsh on Park (though the coaches may prove an exception here). It was a tired looking performance, but those who followed them to Jersey may well endorse the fact that it was at least understandable.

Congratulations to Tynedale's Forwards coach; Ian Peel who has recently been asked to work with Graham Rowntree in the senior England set up - his remit to focus on the tight-five.
After joining the Falcons in 1998 from his native Yorkshire - where he'd been playing for our rivals Wharfedale - it's fair to say that he's been a massive success in the North East. Dealing with the disappointment of having to retire from playing duties at the tender age of 29, he has quickly carved himself an excellent reputation for his coaching talents.
Commencing his new career at the Falcon's where he was Assistant Coach, he joined the Tynedale coaching staff on a part-time basis where his knowledge and expertise have been widely appreciated. More recently he took on a role as National Scrum Coach where he works with squads from the Under 17's to the England Saxons. This has perhaps given him an ideal platform to showcase his skills and now working with Stuart Lancaster's coaching team can be added to the CV, it's a career that is certainly on the up.
All at Tynedale congratulate Peely and wish him all the best at the top table.

A tough game for the Raiders, Park managing to keep it tight in the second-half nullifying the wind advantage held by Tyne. There were positives to be had, plenty of youngsters getting on the field to face an experienced Park side which included a number of their first teamers.

Colts & Centurions games cancelled - FROST
This weekend the First XV head south and take on Cambridge. West Hartlepool entertain the Raiders, the Centurions are back in action with an away game at Middlesbrough leaving the Colts as the only team to worry the turf at Tynedale Park - taking on Jed Thistle.
The Veterans have the weekend off, particularly needed after last weeks exertions both on the pitch and afterwards at Scott Ferguson's stag do!
Cambridge made the trip to Tynedale back in September in a game that failed to live up to the pre-match hype. In what was an unusually dour affair, the free-flowing rugby failed to materialise and neither did a home victory - Cambridge running out 23 to 15 victors. All anticipate a better game...and we anticipate a better result.

The First team Match Report is now live (this is the new 'improved' report which now includes images of the match report). The website is still in development and this is one of a number of areas that are slowly being improved. We still need volunteers to update certain sections of the site...anyone interested should speak to Steve Hull or myself (Andrew Burns).
This weekend see's a return for rugby after the festive period with all but the Centurions pulling on their boots...
The First XV entertain Barking who are enduring a difficult season and presently sit second from bottom in the league. Tyne ran out 29 to 22 winners in the reverse fixture back in September. The boys will no doubt be targetting this game as a potential five-pointer and look to make it three home wins on the bounce. The game kicks-off at 2pm and all supporters are welcome to arrive early and enjoy the comfort of the bar with a pre-match drink.
Also playing at Tynedale Park on Saturday are the Veterans. Reasonably 'fresh' from their away victory at Ashington last month, the Vets face near neighbours Border Park. This is the first of two warm-up games before the boys/old men begin their defence of the Cup. Rumours sweep the Tyne Valley that this may be Ian Graham's final run out...surely not?
The Raiders make the trip south to Darlington where they take on the Mowden Park team of the town. Fresh from a convincing win on New Year's Eve away to Gosforth, the boys will look to commence 2012 as they finished 2011. It's been an exceptional season for the Raiders and they'll be intending to keep it that way.
The busiest of boys have been the Colts. Whilst the grown-ups where enjoying the holiday festivities, the Colts were enjoying their rugby - albeit with a defeat to Berwick on Boxing Day. Usual service was resumed with an emphatic 84-5 home win against Duns earlier this week. The Colts face Langholm on Saturday.
All the best to every player and every Tyne team, c'mon boys!!!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR
Rugby returns to Tynedale Park and we are delighted to welcome BARKING RUFC, making their second visit to Corbridge, as our opponents today. The three-week gap since the last National Division One matches on 17th December has, we hope, whetted the appetite for rugby amongst Tynedale supporters, and we are sure we will all witness an exciting match against last season’s League runners-up.
Of the four new teams in National League One last season, Barking, Macclesfield, Rosslyn Park and Coventry, the Essex team was the one which made the biggest impact, and they only just lost out to London Scottish on bonus points as can be seen from the 2010/11 final table shown earlier in this match programme.
Results between the two clubs in the three matches played to date have been:- 6 November 2010. Tynedale 17 Barking 41 12 March 2011. Barking 41 Tynedale 12 17 September 2011. Barking 22 Tynedale 29

RECOVERING FROM CHRISTMAS EXCESSES. If you feel a little sluggish after the festivities, Paddy Anson, the strength and conditioning coach at Exeter Rugby Club, advises taking five steps to get back into shape:- • Healthy routine – Cut back on calories and sort out your diet. • Fitness test –Use aerobic tests to set new goals. • Fat-burning diet – Don’t cut out carbohydrates too quickly. Eat carbohydrates in a careful manner whilst training and eat plenty of vegetables and protein. Slow-release protein shakes (caseines) are beneficial. • Fat-burning exercise – Interval training on a treadmill or cross-trainer is good, with hill sprints or swimming for variety. • Motivation – Download music to take running. Train with a partner for competition. Wear padding for extra cushioning to avoid injuries when the body is fatigued. • Well, that’s the supporters sorted out. Now, what about the players ?

BARKING’S 2010/11 SEASON
The 2011/12 Rugby Football Union Year Book says, “Barking led the division for much of the season and held a seven-point advantage over eventual champions London Scottish at the turn of the year. An inferior bonus point tally, though, was to cost them dear as the Exiles recovered from losing their first three games to reel off 27 straight wins, none more important that the 13-17 success at Barking on the penultimate weekend.” Barking’s own summary of the season said, “The 2010/11 season was the most successful in the club’s history, although ultimately it fell just 60 seconds short of perfection.”
With the coaching team of Alex Codling and Kevin Sorrell moving on, followed by a number of players, this season’s Barking team has a different look about it. When Tynedale played the East End side on 6 November 2010 at Corbridge, the teams were:-
TYNEDALE Hamish Smales; Peter Cole, Charlie Ingall, Guy Rundle, Ali Gray; Andres Hall, Matt Outson; Johnny Williams, Stephen Ridley, Matthew Shields; Richard Boyle, Graeme Dunn; Andrew Murray, Jamie Murray, Phil Dawson. Rep. Alan Rogers, David Graham, Peter Southern, Greg Irvin and Barney Maddison.
BARKING Adam Armstrong; Nicholas Fraser, Scott Alfeld, Kevin Sorrell, David Vincent; Harry Owens, Luke Greatrex; Sean Mullins, Marcus Bloomberg, Alexander MacKenzie; Daniel Lloyd-Jones, Benjamin Thomas; James Ngan, James Kellard, Anthony Andrews. Rep. Jack Owens, Goward Ambrose, Lee Griffiths, Sean Flannery and Matthew Heeks.
Only eight of the Tynedale squad of 20 are likely to be available to be picked today. Far fewer than that will be appearing for the Essex team.
MATCH OFFICIALS
Referee MARCUS CATON played rugby and coached at the University of Wollowgong in Australia for ten years. He began refereeing in 2003 with the Illawaro Referees’ Society on the south coast of New South Wales. He then came to the UK and joined the Notts, Lincs and Derby Referees’ Society in 2005. Marcus teaches in the Physical Education Dept., Trinity School, Nottingham and lives in Belper in Derbyshire. He makes his third visit to Tynedale Park today having officiated at the matches v Wharfedale and Rosslyn Park last season.
Referee’s Assistant DEREK BLAKE from Newton Aycliffe is making his second trip to Tynedale Park, having officiated here v Birmingham & Solihull on 29 October. Last season he ran touch here seven times – the last being v Macclesfield on Saturday 23 April 2011. Referee’s Assistant PAUL EMERSON from Barnard Castle is making his fourth visit, having officiated on 27 August v Stourbridge in the first match of the season, then v Coventry on 15 October and v Cinderford on 26 November 2011. Referee’s Coach DAVID HUDSON from Guiseley, Leeds is an infrequent visitor, since he is making only his sixth trip to Corbridge in 8 years. He was last here on 30 October 2010 v Otley, when the referee was Karl Kirkpatrick. We hope all four officials enjoy their day at Tynedale Park.

The club Management Committee will soon be conducting a review & planning
The club Management Committee will soon be conducting a review & planning exercise in order to produce a detailed strategic plan that will be communicated to the membership.
As part of the process we would like to include the thoughts & ideas of the club members and have therefore arranged for an "open forum" evening on Tuesday 10th January at 7pm in the clubhouse. The agenda will be designed to collate members' views on all aspects of the club including the rugby (playing) operations at senior & youth levels and the commercial operations. All views & comments will be collated for inclusion in the planning discussions.
If you are unable to make it on the night and would like to add your views & comments, please email them to the following address: ian.lewis@tynedalerfc.co.uk
or by post:
The Old Granary, Hedley North Farm, Stocksfield, NE43 7SS
or call 078 999 05573.
