This Saturday we host what is always a keenly awaited “derby” as our old friends and “neighbours” from Wharfedale head up to Tynedale Park for the latest in the “Battle of the Dales” series.
We extend a very warm welcome to all their players, officials and supporters for the 28th league match between the first teams. There have also been as many Tynedale Raiders v Wharfedale Foresters matches in that time, and the two clubs have always continued to play friendly pre-season matches when the 1st XV’s have been in different leagues.

HISTORY OF WHARFEDALE RUFC

The Wharfedale club has been based at Wharfeside Avenue, Threshfield, since 1958. The club had been founded in 1932. The first ground had been at Wood Lane and in its formative years the club headquarters included the Wilson Arms and the Black Horse.
The club quickly became a real force in Yorkshire rugby. Through the 1970’s the standard of rugby and the playing record of the club was impressive, and numerous players were rewarded with selections for the County, District and England teams at all.
There was a meteoric rise through the leagues in the run from 1987 to 1996 which saw the club reach the heady heights of level 3 rugby, after starting at level 7.
Wharfedale then stayed longer in that league, (now National One), than any other club, completing twenty seasons at that level. Survival was not always easy (especially 2011 & 2013 and eventually they were relegated in April 2016. (the season after us).

PAST MATCHES BETWEEN WHARFEDALE AND TYNEDALE
Since 1987 there have been 27 League matches between the two 1st XV teams. Wharfedale have won 9 times (578 points) but Tynedale have won 17 times (633 points), with one match drawn.

LAST SEASON
Tyne had the better of things last season against the Greens, winning both matches. The match at Wharfedale, on 15 Oct 2022, ended with a 29-22 away win while the home match, on 28th January 2023, was a real nip and tuck affair with a late Chris Wearmouth try, converted by Jake Rodgers, edging a 21-20 victory.

WHARFEDALE THIS SEASON
It’s won one, lost one for Wharfedale at this early stage of the season. The Greens pulled off a last minute victory at new boys Lymm in their opening match whilst ‘the slope’ seemed to feature in last week’s defeat at home to Rotherham Titans with Wharfedale’s 14-3 half-time lead not being sufficient as the Titans won the second half 31-5.
