TYNEDALE V HUDDERSFIELD
This Saturday we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of HUDDERSFIELD RUFC for the sixteenth League match between the two clubs.
Matches between the clubs have always been fairly close. There have been 15 matches: 9 wins for Tynedale (353 points), 5 wins for Huddersfield (292 points). One draw.

MARCUS STEWART

Among our Huddersfield guests will be Marcus Stewart, the father of Kian and Finlay Stewart, who both play for Huddersfield RUFC.
Unfortunately Marcus has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Marcus is a former Huddersfield Town striker and can often be seen on the sidelines at Lockwood Park supporting his sons or enjoying a few beers in the bar afterwards!
Having previously supported MND charities such as the My Name’s Doddie Foundation, Tynedale RFC will be making a donation to support Marcus and other MND sufferers via the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation. If you would also like to provide support you can donate here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/louise-stewart254

Some more background on Marcus:
Marcus’ playing career spanned 20 years. He amassed over 650 appearances at eight different clubs, including Bristol Rovers, Huddersfield Town, Ipswich Town, Sunderland, Bristol City, Yeovil Town and Exeter City, scoring over 250 goals. The Bristol-born striker also played at every tier of English professional football, including scoring 19 goals for Ipswich Town in the Premier League, helping the Tractor Boys secure fifth place in 2000-2001 and qualify for the UEFA Cup.
Since retirement, he has moved into coaching and management, working at Exeter City, Bristol Rovers and Walsall. Marcus is currently Head of Player Development at Yeovil Town.

The first match was at Huddersfield at their old ground (Waterloo) on 28th October 1978 which Tynedale won 9-3. The next match at Huddersfield, two seasons later, was memorable for the fact that despite leading 19-0 at one stage Tynedale conspired to lose the match 19-20!
The first time Huddersfield visited Tynedale Park was on 27th October 1979 when Tynedale won 16-10.

HUDDERSFIELD RUFC MATCHES
• The club was originally founded in 1870 and is one of the oldest rugby clubs in Yorkshire. Huddersfield were playing in the top ranks of English clubs when, in August 1895, the town hosted a meeting at the George Hotel and was one of the 20 clubs that resigned from the Rugby Union to set up The Northern Rugby Football Union, which allowed players to be compensated for 'broken time.' This meant they could claim for wages lost by playing on Saturdays. They were not allowed to make a living from the game – they were not 'professional’. The original club stopped playing for 14 years. The amateur club re-formed in 1909.
• The club has played at various delightfully named venues- Rifle Field, Fartown, Luck Lane, Salendine Nook, Waterloo and finally, Lockwood Park.
• Lockwood viaduct, with its 32 graceful arches, provides the backdrop for the Field’s grounds.
• Amongst the Huddersfield players the pitch at Lockwood Park is referred to as “The Field of Dreams”.
• Mini-rugby began in England in 1969 at Huddersfield.
