HULL IONIANS V TYNEDALE
Saturday 16th March 2024 (KO 3pm)

The 1stXV are back on their tour of Yorkshire this weekend as they travel down and across to East Yorkshire this time to take on our old friends and rivals Hull Ionians.

RECENT MATCHES BETWEEN THE TWO TEAMS.

2018-2019 Tynedale 20 Hull Ionians 50
2018-2019 Hull Ionians 38 Tynedale 29
2021-2022 Hull Ionians 50 Tynedale 14
2021-2022 Tynedale 18 Hull Ionians 18
2022-2023 Tynedale 21 Hull Ionians 36
2022-2023 Hull Ionians 59 Tynedale 7
2023-2024 Tynedale 28 Hull Ionians 25

Hull Ionians have won five of those last seven matches, with one drawn, and have scored 147 points in their three home matches, against Tynedale’s measly 50 points.
Will that change this time? Tynedale won 28-25 in November didn’t they? The Ionians web-site said “ Close, but no cigar; Ionians suffer another defeat at Corbridge”.

WHO PLAYED IN THE CORRESPONDING MATCH A DECADE AGO?

Wigton, Tynedale and Hull Ionians were the only founder members of League North One (when the Leagues were formed in 1987) who still remained there, thirteen years later. Tyne won promotion in 2000, and again in 2008. The Ionians then emulated Tyne and moved up from level 5 to level 3.

So, in Season 2013/14 when Ionians had been promoted to National One (Level 3) it was great to renew old rivalries after a gap of five years.
In the first match that season, at Corbridge, on the 30th November 2013 Tynedale won a close contest 40 - 29. Rob Parker played on the wing for Tynedale and Graeme Dunn was captain that day. One special player for Tyne, who later became a British Lion, Chris Harris, was in the centre.

When Tynedale played against Ionians in the return, on the 29th March 2014 at Brantingham Park the two teams were :-
TYNEDALE: Craig Willis; Hamish Smales, Jack Harrison (Capt.), Ben Frankland, Sep Visser; Gavin Beasley, Greg Illingworth; Joe Anderson, David Nelson, Mark Irving; Glen Young, Graeme Dunn; Dan Temm, Harrison Collins and Matthew Charters. Rep. Sam White, Stephen Ridley, Stuart Johnson, Nick Cairns and Peter Weightman.
HULL IONIANS: Keane Naylor; Steve Slingsby, Chris Reakes, Joe Martin, Jon Steel; Joe Barker, Isaac Green; Dave Laverick, Tom Rice, Steve Johnson; Joe Makin, Joe Sanders; Mark Wigham, Alex Campbell and Alex Torkington. Rep. Ade Longbone, Ali Thomson, Danny Hague, Rob Kench and Sam Wilson.
Tynedale won the match 21-45. Only one Tynedale player who played that day is still in the first team squad – the peerless Graeme Dunn.

TYNEDALE V HULL IONIANS THIS SEASON

Our reverse fixture which Tynedale won 28-25 was played on the 18th November 2023/
In an entertaining match the lead changed hands several times with Ionians looking to have nailed a victory until late Tynedale pressure resulted in a penalty try deep into stoppage time.

The Tynedale squad that day was:-
FORWARDS: Rewcastle, Frankland, Caudle, Cousin, Dunn, Blackburn, Wainwright, Bell
BACKS: Telford, Rodgers, Hutton, Miller, Lilley, Beaty, Parker
REPLACEMENTS: Hughes, Haigh, Vassallo, White, Leslie

IONIANS THIS SEASON
Surprisingly Ionians, who finished a strong 3rd in the league last season, have struggled this season after a reasonable start and sit in 2nd bottom spot with only 4 victories from their 21 matches to date
Having won 3 of their opening 7 matches their season spiralled downwards. After an impressive home 36 – 23 victory over Wharfedale on 14th October they went 12 matches without a victory until defeating Lymm 31-19 in their last home match on 24th February
We know Ionians are a better side then their league position suggests and expect another very difficult away match – they certainly will have targeted a home victory this weekend
