CUP MATCHES BETWEEN TYNEDALE AND HULL
The clubs met twice in the Cup before meeting in leagues fixtures. Both matches were played at Haworth Park, before Hull moved to their present Ferens ground in 2008.

The results of those matches were:-
Powergen Cup
1st Round 18th September 2004 Hull 26 - Tynedale 20

EDF Energy National Trophy
3rd Round 8th December 2007 Hull 8 - Tynedale 17
(In the 4th Round of the EDF Energy National Trophy Tynedale lost to Manchester at home 10-22(aet))

HULL HISTORY

Although Hull RUFC was founded as recently as July 1992 it arose from the merger of longer established Hull Clubs. The changes began in Spring 1989 when Hull & East Riding (Tynedale’s opponents on a regular basis in friendlies in the 1970’s and 1980’s and in league matches when leagues were formed in 1987) merged with Ionians RUFC to form Hull Ionians.

However, 28% of the club members voted against the merger and reformed Hull & East Riding who existed for only 3 years before merging with Old Hymerians in July 1992 to form Hull RUFC.

The colours of the new club were to be red, black and gold, and the first club captain was Zimbabwean international fly-half David Walters.

HULL RUFC’s remarkable steps up and down the league ladder.

In 32 years they have been promoted six times and relegated twice, moving between levels 8 and 3.

  • In July 1992, Hull took the place of Old Hymerians at level 7 in North-East Division Two.
  • The RFU re-organisation of the Leagues in 1996 meant Hull were re-located to level 8, North East Division Three.
  • In 1996/97 as runners-up to champions Darlington they were promoted to North East Two.
  • 2001/02 They won the Division by 9 clear points to win promotion to Division Two North East.
  • 2003/04 They topped the League and were promoted to Division North One.
  • 2008/09 Hull were second to Westoe, which meant a play-off against Chester from Midlands One. They won 40-15 to go up into the National Leagues – Nat. League 2 (North), level 4.
  • 2009/15 Six years in Nat. League 2 (North), then relegation. Tynedale were in National One at the time, so the teams avoided each other until 2019.
  • 2015/19 Four years at level 5 then back into the National Leagues, and meeting Tynedale for the first League fixture between the two clubs.
  • 2022. Promotion into National One, level 3, followed by relegation in a daunting season when they really struggled.

Apart from league success, in 2011 Hull attempted to win “T’owd Tin Pot” and reached their first-ever Yorkshire Cup Final, with wins over Morley, Beverley and Cleckheaton, but they lost to Huddersfield in the final by 18-25.
However, 2012 saw Hull win the Yorkshire Cup for the first time, beating Wharfedale 20-10 at Clifton Park, York and then in 2018 they won the Cup for a second time, beating Doncaster Phoenix 34-7.

THIS SEASON’S EARLIER MATCH – 25th Nov 2023

Hull 10 v Tynedale 34
Perhaps a clinical Tynedale side caught Hull on an “off-day” but the result is certainly one of Tynedale’s more impressive away results in recent times.

Tynedale started well and led 17-3 at the interval, going on to score six tries in what was a relatively comfortable win.
The Tynedale squad that day was:-
FORWARDS: White, Frankland, Caudle, Wearmouth, Nankivell, Vassallo, Wainwright, Bell
BACKS: Telford, Leslie, Hutton, Miller, Lilley, Beaty, Parker
REPLACEMENTS: Hughes, Rewcastle, Hanning, Redshaw, Douglas

HULL THIS SEASON
Hull currently sit two places below Tynedale in the league in eighth place on 13 fewer points.
This season Hull, like many teams in the league, have been very inconsistent as their results below show. In last Saturday’s match against high-flying Rotherham Titans they led 17-14 at half-time before the Titans forwards got on top of things. Another tough game is anticipated with Hull being hungry to avenge the earlier season match at Hull.
