LEEDS TYKES V TYNEDALE
Saturday 6th April 2024 (KO 3pm)

The 1stXV visit Yorkshire for the ninth, and final, time of the season this Saturday when we travel to Bramhope, north-west of Leeds, to take on league leaders Leeds Tykes.

THE EVOLUTION OF LEEDS TYKES
Leeds’ rugby union history stretches back to 1878 and the formation of Headingley FC, who were later to merge with Roundhay RUFC to form Leeds RUFC.
The evolution of Leeds Tykes can be split into several eras:-
1878-1992 – Headingley FC
1924-1992 – Roundhay RFC
1992–1998 – Leeds RUFC
1998–2007 – Leeds Tykes
2007-2014 – Leeds Carnegie
2014-2020 – Yorkshire Carnegie
2020- Leeds Tykes

PREVIOUS ENCOUNTER
Before this season the only time that the two clubs had met was on Sunday 21st January 2007 in the EDF Energy National Trophy - although Tynedale had played both Headingley and Roundhay in the pre-league and Pre-Leeds era.

EDF Energy National Trophy Round 4
Tynedale had won through to the 4th Round in the following way:-
Tynedale 41 Morley 14
Rugby Lions 12 Tynedale 25
Tynedale 37 West Park St. Helens 6

Because of gale damage at Headingley the previous week this 4th round tie was rearranged to be played at Tynedle Park.
Leeds Tykes won 3 - 36, with Tynedale, very surprisingly, leading 3-0 after two minutes. That lead only lasted for 13 minutes. However, the local Hexham Courant’s headline, ever supportive, read “Tynedale heads held high in cup tie defeat.”

The Tykes and their supporters were excellent visitors, and the Leeds club joined in the spirit of the occasion by waiving their entitlement to a 40% cut of the gate money.

The teams were:-
TYNEDALE.
William Massey; Jack Smales, Ben Duncan, Mark Laycock, Hamish Smales; Phil Belgian (Capt.), Ross Samson; Peter Southern, Aaron Charlton, Douglas Jupp; Graeme Smith, Ben Marshall; Paul Scott, Andrew Murray, Grant Rastall.

TYNEDALE V LEEDS TYKES THIS SEASON
Our reverse fixture at Tynedale Park was played on 6th January 2024 after the original fixture scheduled for 2nd December 2023 fell victim to a severe frost.
Leeds continued their winning record with a 35-12 bonus-point victory although Tynedale started strongly and after 30 minutes held a deserved 12-0 lead.
Leeds, however, showed their class and raised their game to control most of the remaining 50 minutes, scoring 5 tries in the process, although they had to wait until the 73rd minute before they crossed for their fourth bonus-point try.

The Tynedale squad was:-
FORWARDS: Hughes, Frankland, Caudle, Wearmouth, Nankivell, Cousin, Vassallo, Bell
BACKS: Telford, Leslie, Dryden, Miller, Lilley, Beaty, Parker
REPLACEMENTS: White, Rewcastle, Johnston, Dunn, Scott

LEEDS TYKES THIS SEASON
Leeds Tykes have had a wonderful season to date and proudly sit top of the league table, winning 22 of their 23 matches and only failing to record a four-try bonus point in two of their matches – Wharfedale (H) and Wharfedale (A).
With only three league matches remaining Leeds are locked in a close battle at the top of the table with rivals Rotherham Titans, who inflicted Leeds’ only defeat of the season with a narrow 32-26 score in the last match played before the Easter break.

The Tykes currently lead the Titans by virtue of having secured 2 more bonus points than their rivals with both sides having recorded the same number of wins.
Their remaining league matches are:-
Leeds Tykes v Tynedale
Fylde v Leeds Tykes
Leeds Tykes v Sheffield

Sheffield Tigers v Rotherham Titans
Rotherham Titans v Preston Grasshoppers
Billingham v Rotherham Titans
