Hinckley RFC v Tynedale RFC cup match
These two teams’ first meeting ever was in Round One of the Senior Clubs’ Knock-out competition played at Tynedale Park on the 13th September 1997.
That competition had started life in 1971 as the RFU Club Competition. It became the John Player Cup in 1976 then the Pilkington Cup in 1989 before Pilkington withdrew its sponsorship in 1997. The name given temporarily was the Senior Clubs’ Knock-out competition until new sponsors (Tetley’s) were found in 1998.
The teams that day were:-
Tynedale- Ed. Lowe; Scott Ferguson, Gary Fleming, John Fletcher (Captain), Craig Johnston; Richard Cramb, Simon Clayton-Hibbott; Steve Bowen, Edward Parker, Paul Winter; Fergus Mitchell, Steve Dunn; Alan Lowdon, Mickey Lee and Andrew Robson. Rep:- Richard Parker, Aaron Charlton, Keith Johnson and Mark Walton.
Hinckley:- S. Bunting; A. Dutton, A Harrison, C.Dutton (Captain), E. Brittain; A, Massarella, R. Massarella; K. Ashfield, D. Massarella, P. Wayne; P. Green, P. Goodhall; P. Williams, A. Goodall and T. Walton. Rep:- A. Massarella, M. Walton, D. Kitchen, J. Roper, J. Gosling and P. Garwood.
For Tynedale John Fletcher’s son Ollie hooked briefly for the 1stXV before moving to Newcastle Red Bulls in 2021, while John’s two younger sons Archie and Ted are now part of the current Tynedale 1stXV squad. Craig Johnston is Fixtures Secretary and in charge of the Bar and Grounds, and Steven Dunn (aka Agga)’s sons Graeme and Richard have represented Tynedale for many years.
The 1997 match ended in a victory for Tynedale by 32-8. In the second round of the Cup Tynedale beat local rivals Northern by 5-22 at McCracken Park but later lost 24-11 to Doncaster away from home. The Tetley’s Bitter Cup became the Powergen Cup in 2001, then the EDF.
Tynedale supporters may be interested to know that Dean Richards, who went to school at Hinckley and served there in the police force, is now Director of Rugby at Doncaster, who are now a Championship (level 2) club. His son Charlie is a valued member of the Tynedale first team squad.
