RICHARD IAN CRAMB

Richard passed away after a long and courageous fight against cancer on Monday 22 December 2025.

Richard’s passing is tragic enough but given it came almost two years to the day since the death of Rory, his son and former Tynedale player, it is truly heartbreaking.

Born in Falkirk on 7 September 1963 Richard gave a lifetime of service to rugby both on and off the field. Many have remarked that Richard was the most talented fly half to ever represent Tynedale.

A classy playmaker on the field Richard was first capped by Scotland against Romania in the 1987 inaugural Rugby World Cup, Richard won four caps for Scotland between 1987 and 1988, landing a drop-goal in the 23-12 Five Nations Championship success against France at Murrayfield in February 1988.

Richard also played for the Barbarians and Anglo Scots.

Richard played his club rugby for (in chronological order) Durham City, Harlequins, Aspen(USA), London Scottish, Wellington College Old Boys (NZ), Newcastle Gosforth and Tynedale.

Richard was honoured by one of his former clubs, London Scottish, when he was inducted to their Hall of Fame at their Legends Dinner in July 2025.

Richard represented Tynedale for four seasons between 1996 and 2000, playing 95 matches and scoring 294 points (including 18 tries and 24 drop goals). In his final season Richard steered Tynedale in their famous ‘22-0’ season which saw Tynedale promoted into the national leagues for the first time.

After his retirement from playing, he coached throughout the age groups at Tynedale as well as with the Colts and eventually became the Tynedale’s Chairman of Rugby in 2021.

Richard’s London Scottish, and Scotland international, teammate Gavin Hastings summed him up perfectly in Scottish Rugby’s official obituary for Richard: “Cramby was a very understated player and a true team man. Unquestionably, one of rugby’s Mr Nice Guys. RIP Cramby.”

Tynedale has lost a true clubman, as a player, coach, rugby administrator, parent and supporter. He will be sadly missed. The world has also lost a truly lovely man.

RIP Richard
