Rob Cunningham (05/01/1951 – 04/07/2026)
We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of ex-Tynedale player Rob Cunningham, who died peacefully on Saturday 4th July surrounded by his family.
Rob, born in Edinburgh, joined Tynedale in the early 1970‘s when he came to the area to carry out his teacher training.
Rob, a hooker, was an excellent all-round rugby player with a very strong personality and a high set of standards which helped Tynedale move up into a new era back in the mid 1970’s.
After he left Tynedale in 1977 his rugby career spiralled, playing for Gosforth and Bath at the top level of English rugby, He was a member of Bath’s John Player Cup winning side in 1984.
Rob sat on the Scotland international bench 14 times, but sadly never gained a cap. He captained Scotland B in 1984, and toured North America with the full national squad in 1985.
Following his playing retirement, he moved into high-level coaching, managing senior teams at Saracens and Bristol but always kept a high interest and involvement with all levels of rugby.
Rob never forgot his time at Tynedale and maintained regular contact.
Our heartfelt thoughts and sincere condolences are with his daughter Nicola, his family, and his many friends at this very sad time.
RIP Rob
