SEDGLEY PARK TIGERS RUFC V TYNEDALE RFC

Our 1stXV head down to Greater Manchester this Saturday to renew matches against Sedgley Park Tigers after a gap of three seasons.

SEDGLEY PARK TIGERS
THE TIGERS’ VENUE
Sedgley Park is a district of Prestwich approximately two miles north of Manchester city centre. The club’s very first ground was a farmer's field in Whitefield, so the club have never actually played at Sedgley Park.
For two years after WW2 all games were played away, with barely enough playing members for two teams, until the club, in 1955, moved to their present site, Park Lane in Whitefield.

Whitefield is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury, Greater Manchester, along the south bank of the River Irwell, 3 miles (4.8 km) southeast of Bury, and 5 miles (8.0 km) northwest of Manchester.

A HISTORY OF TYNEDALE v SEDGLEY PARK MATCHES
Tynedale first played Sedgley Park in September 1996 in a North 1 fixture. The game was away at Whitefield, Manchester; Sedgley won 36-20. Sedgley won the league that season with Tynedale finishing third.
The Tynedale squad that day was:-
FORWARDS: r Parker, E Parker, P Winter, S Dunn, S Turnbull, R Anderson, M Lee, J Ponton
BACKS: G Rutherford, J Robertson, S Hogg, G Taylor, G Fleming, S Ferguson, J Shotton
REPLACEMENTS: J Hare, A Robson, E Lowe, D Stephenson

Since then the teams have played 25 times. Tynedale have won 14, lost 10, Drawn 1, with points for - 653. Points against - 519.
Tynedale fared pretty well early on against Sedgley, until 2020 when Sedgley started to dominate.
However, in the last league match between the two sides, at Tynedale Park on 11th. March 2023, Tynedale inflicted Sedgley’s only league defeat of the season, edging a very close match 14-11.
Tynedale’s squad that day was:-
FORWARDS: White, Frankland, Caudle, Wearmouth, Nankivell, Cousin, Johnston, Hall
BACKS: Telford, Leslie, Todhunter, Miller, Grant, Dryden, Parker
REPLACEMENTS: Haigh, Dodd, Brown, Hutton, Rodgers

Nevertheless, in that 2022/23 season Sedgley won promotion to National One as champions with 118 points, ahead of Fylde (106 points), Hill Ionians (95), and Rotherham (80). Tynedale finished in 6th place with 69 points.

SEDGLEY PARK THIS SEASON
The Tigers were relegated back into our league at the end of last season, finishing 2nd bottom, winning 8 of their 26 fixtures.

After their 3 seasons in National One Sedgley appear to have re-grouped well and are already looked upon by many as favourites to return to level 3 rugby. They certainly have made an impressive start and, albeit after only two league matches, they sit head of the table with 10 points from a possible 10, above Hull Ionians and Harrogate on points difference.
