A STATISTICAL SEVEN SEASON STUDY
There are a number ways of reacting to these 1stXV figures. We can accept Benjamin Disraeli’s view that “there are three types of lies - lies, damned lies and statistics” and disbelieve them all. We can agree with Mark Twain who said “figures often beguile me”, or we can just disregard the statistics altogether.
If we were to follow Mark Twain then it would be much more beguiling, wouldn’t it, if the 1st XV could at least attain or better the 86.7% home and 57.1% away records achieved in 2018.
This last season a win instead of a one point defeat at Chester (32-31) would have boosted the away record, and how did the team manage to lose 31-38 at home to Harrogate – who finished bottom of the league with 19 points and only three wins all season?
