WILLIAM (BILL) EDGER)
We are sorry to have to report the death of William (Bill) Edger from Morpeth, a longstanding supporter of Tynedale Rugby Club.
Bill was for many years one of a group of pals who acted as gatekeepers at Tynedale Park, controlling admittance to home matches in a firm but friendly manner. Along with John Cousin, he, Walter Rutherford, Tom Stainthorpe, 'George' Watson and John Drew together formed a stalwart team for many years.
After retiring as a gateman Bill continued to support the club, and retained an interest in the Club’s activities until his death.
JOHN BATES – DEATH OF ENGLAND’S FIRST YDOWe are sad to report that John Bates, who will be well known to many players, coaches and rugby followers in Northumberland died on the 30th January 2023 in St. Oswald’s Hospice,
John played for the Morpeth RFC’s 1 st XV for many years, taught at Gosforth West Middle School and organised numerous County Schools competitions. He then took early retirement and, through Newcastle University, became the Northumberland Youth Development Officer – the first (along with a Hampshire YDO) such appointment in England. His influence on school and club rugby in Northumberland was immense then, and he continued to provide wise advice in his later years.
He leaves a wife, Maureen and two sons, Andrew and Neil.
