PRESTON GRASSHOPPERS
PLEASE - NO HACKING.
On the 28th September 1869 a meeting was held at the Bull Hotel, Preston at which the following resolution was passed: ‘That a club be at once formed in Preston to play football with the Rugby Rules of the game but without hacking. That the club be called ‘The Preston Grasshoppers.’
So, the Grasshoppers, founded in 1869 became one of the oldest clubs in the North West of England. Not quite as old as the original Liverpool of Liverpool St. Helens (1857), Manchester (1860) or Sale (1861), but well ahead of New Brighton (1875), Macclesfield (1877), Waterloo (1882), Vale of Lune (1900), Kendal (1905), Fylde (1919), and Sedgley Park (1932) in the matter of years.
For comparison, the oldest clubs in the North-East are Darlington RFC (1863), Durham City (1872) and Percy Park (1872).
WHERE DID THE GRASSHOPPER NAME COME FROM?
(N.B. Tynedale’s Grasshoppers were re-named Centurions some years ago).
The name ‘Grasshoppers’ was chosen because, amongst the founders of the Preston club were several old boys of Cheltenham College. That school had a game ‘Fireflies v. Grasshoppers’ Now that’s a good enough reason, isn’t it?
