TYNEDALE RFC v CHESTER RUFC
Saturday 7th November 2026 (KO 2pm)

WELCOME TO TYNEDALE PARK

This Saturday we welcome all the players, officials and supporters from Chester RUFC who have returned to our league this season after a “level transfer” which took them into National 2 West for one season.

It’s a busy day at Tynedale Park with the Raiders hosting Barnard Castle 1stXV and the Colts hosting Morpeth Colts – we extend a warm welcome to all our guests.
While it’s a busy day at Corbridge our Centurions head up to Morpeth to play ta hastily rearranged replacement match.

We also, of course, extend a warm welcome to all of this week’s match officials.

To EVERYBODY - Enjoy your day!

CHESTER RUFC – WHERE HAVE THEY BEEN
In Season 2022/2023 most leagues were reorganised. National League rugby was restructured to create National 1, a league of 14 teams (level 3), and Nat.2, three leagues of 14, split into North, West and East (level 4).

Chester RUFC were originally placed in Nat.2 (North) but were moved into Nat.2 (West) at the end of that 2022/23 season in a “Level Transfer” which was necessitated by the need to retain 14 teams in each of the three National 2 Leagues after a variety of geographically placed clubs had been relegated from National 1 into National 2 leagues.

After serving their time Chester then moved back into Nat.2 (North) for 2024/25 only to be moved back into Nat.2 (West) in 2025-2026. Again after serving their 1 year in Nat.2 (West) they have been moved back into Nat. (North) for his season! Chester neighbours Lymm have not been so “lucky” and remain for a second season in Nat.2 (West).

For Chester competing in Nat.2(North) their longest away trip is to Tynedale (around 180 miles) while in Nat.2 (West) they face several away journeys well in excess of 180 miles – Redruth (325 miles), Plymouth (274 miles), Barnstaple (248 mile), Exeter (231 miles) and Taunton (199 miles).

Another Cheshire club, Macclesfield, were directed to Nat2 (West) at the end of last season, despite finishing third, just behind Tynedale in Nat2 (North). They declined to go and were consequently relegated instead, and now compete in Regional 1 North-West (level 5).

This is a constant difficulty for Cheshire Clubs, which sit mid-country. Are they North, East, or West? A real geographic dilemma. As the most Northerly National League club Tynedale have hopefully no such problem.

LEAGUE RESULTS BETWEEN THE CLUBS

2025-26 None (Chester in Nat.2(West)

Fifteen matches
Tynedale- 5 wins (403 points),
Chester - 10 wins (396 points)
So, Chester are statistically well ahead.

Why only fifteen league matches?
Why did the clubs not meet in the Leagues until 2015?
Leagues were introduced in 1987.
In 1999-2000 Chester were promoted to North 1 (along with Darlington Mowden Park) from North 2 East, just as Tynedale were being promoted from North 1 to Nat.3 (N), so the clubs did not meet at that time.

There were then two near misses for Chester-
2008-09 They lost 15- 40 in a play-off v Hull (North 1 runners-up)
2010-11 Chester lost 14-16 away in a play-off v Sheffield Tigers (Nat.3 Midlands runners-up)

In each case they missed promotion into the National Leagues but in 2012-2013 they did win promotion into Nat.2(North). In 2008 Tynedale had been promoted into National One so it wasn’t until September 2015, after Tynedale had been relegated, that the two teams eventually met.

CHESTER THIS SEASON
The top 6 places in National Two (North) currently looks like this:-

Chester have been impressive on their return to National 2 North and currently sit in 3rd position, one place and one league point above Tynedale – that one point being a losing bonus point.

Saturday’s spectators would expect to see a tough top of the table battle, BUT:-

Firstly, this is Chester’s eighth League visit to Corbridge. They have won at Tynedale Park on four of their seven previous trips, so the odds must be in the Cheshire club’s favour.

Secondly, two earlier results in the League this season are interesting and worrying for Tynedale fans:-
12th September 2026 Tynedale 12 Darlington Mowden Park 55
31st October 2026 Chester 25 Darlington Mowden Park 21

And thirdly, Tynedale almost always play badly on Past Players’ Day !!

So – Is it worth Tynedale turning up?

The points scored in matches, at all levels, seem to be increasing year by year and this season to date Chester’s 69-45 victory over Hull Ionians is the highest scoring match in our league - Chester scoring 11 tries to Hull Ionians’s 7 tries. That would certainly keep some spectators happy!

Chester’s League Results to date:-
Chester 35 Wharfedale 7
Chester 13 Sedgley Park 32
Otley 28 Chester 50
Chester 66 Billingham 26
Preston Grasshoppers 26 Chester 31
Chester 69 Hull Ionians 45
Sheffield Tigers 29 Chester 26
Chester 25 Darlington MP 21
