Tynedale RFC v Wharfedale RUFC
Saturday 6th September 2025 (KO 3pm)
WELCOME
We extend a very warm welcome to our friends from Wharfedale this Saturday for an early season ‘Battle of the Dales’ in our opening league fixture.
We also, of course, extend a warm welcome to this week’s match officials for the 1stXV and Raiders fixtures.
To EVERYBODY - Enjoy your day
Ahead of Kick-Off at Tynedale on Saturday, Second Row Brendan McSorley & Full-Back Cam Grant, along with Club President Neil Foster will stage a Q&A Session in the Clubhouse, a new feature of our excellent pre-match Hospitality offering. If you haven't yet booked your seat, you still have time.
Director of Rugby, Peter Southern: "It's always a great day at the Club when Wharfedale come to town. The Dale’s derby is always keenly anticipated by players and supporters alike. Over the last few seasons, only a few points have separated the teams and Saturday won’t be any different
We're looking forward to two excellent test matches & I know Ashington and Carlisle will be stern opposition for our Hadrian’s and Colts teams on the road.
We can't wait to get going."
TYNEDALE & WHARFEDALE LAST SEASON
For Tyne and Dale the final National Two (North) table showed Tynedale, in fifth place, one place ahead of Wharfedale securing 6 more match points.
Tynedale won 12 and drew 3 of their 26 fixtures whilst Wharfedale won 13 and had zero draws,
TYNEDALE v WHARFEDALE LEAGUE HISTORY
Since 1987 there have been 31 League matches between the two 1st XV teams. Wharfedale have won 12 times (683points); Tynedale have won 18 times (741 points), with one match drawn.
There have also been almost as many Raiders v Foresters competitive matches in that time. The two clubs continued to play friendly pre-season matches when the 1st XV’s were in different leagues.
One surprising statistic is that, of the last 14 fixtures the away team has won 6 times (Wharfedale and Tynedale have won 3 each), so playing at home has not always been a great advantage.
TWO OF THIS SEASON’S PRE-SEASON FRIENDLIES
Thursday 28th. August 2025 Wharfedale 7 Leeds Tykes 26.
Leeds kicked off down the slope and within 5 minutes were 12 points ahead, and continued to dominate early possession. A clever cross-field kick found Charlie Venables in acres of space to score the first try which was not converted.
A line out error and hack through saw Keiran Davies win the race to the line for the next try which was converted this time, by Gerry Bi, score 0 -12.
The Wharfedale pack then dominated the scrums and from one of these Will Beecroft burst through to score. This was duly converted by Archie Haddon making the score 7 -12 at half time.
A sweeping move at pace for the Tykes saw Lucas Walsh go over in the corner for a try which was converted by Gerry Bi and a further breakaway try was also converted, to make the final score 7 – 26.
Saturday 30th. August 2025 Tynedale 40 Hinckley 38
As expected the visitors from Leicestershire provided very stiff opposition in what proved to be a good workout for both squads.
Hinckley started at a great pace, settling quickly and moving the ball accurately through the hands, and unsurprisingly scored an early converted try without the home team getting any meaningful possession.
Throughout the match the visitors’ line-outs were faultless, winning all of their throw-ins and disrupting Tynedale’s throws again and again. Elsewhere Tyne matched the visitors, but some inaccurate passing helped Hinckley on occasions. Three long passes by the home side to wingers ended in three tries; one to Tynedale; two interception tries to Hinckley.
It developed into a cracking match between two well-matched teams, and each time one side scored the other responded. Each side scored six tries. Tynedale converted five, through Jake Rodgers and Cam Grant, whilst Hinckley converted four, and lost by two points.

WHARFEDALE RUFC
Wharfedale stayed longer in National One than any other club, completing twenty seasons at that level. However survival was not always easy (especially 2011 & 2013 and eventually they were relegated in April 2016).
The season, 2023-24 was an important season in the history of Wharfedale Rugby Union Football Club, formerly Upper Wharfedale RUFC, as their first fixture had been played in the autumn of
1923. No precise date is known, but the club celebrated that 23/24 season as its Centenary year .
