TYNEDALE HANG ON FOR VICTORY

Report taken from "The Rugby Paper":-

Freezing conditions produced a treacherous surface and a slippery ball, but Tynedale somehow managed to hang on for an unlikely victory, despite being under the cosh for much of the game.
The Tigers dominated territory and possession, with some good lines run by Will Baker, Ben Manderfield and Barney Goatley, but their efforts foundered on the solid rock of the Tynedale defence, where Joe Hanning, Oscar Caudle and Will Miller stood out,

Tynedale began brightly, but struggled to keep the ball, and lost Will Roberts on 11 minutes with a badly gashed mouth in a tackle which brought him a yellow card.
Tynedale took the lead on 23 minutes when Archie Rattray forced his way over from a close range line out, and the catch and drive routine worked again on the half hour, Chris Wearmouth securing the touchdown. Both tries were converted by Cam Grant.

Then the Tigers started to roar, with a series of penalties ending with a try for Ben Crowe, converted by Mark Ireland.
Tynedale were hardly out of their own half in the second period, but the closest Tigers came to breaching the solid Northumbrian defence came with a long range Ireland penalty which drifted wide.

Match Report courtesy of Chris Leslie:-

Two catch-and-drives to one proved just enough as Tynedale clung on for victory, but only just.
The opening score came after 23 minutes, a textbook catch-and-drive putting Tynedale 7–0 ahead. Then, after what felt like at least 20 Oscar Caudle tackles, Wearwolf powered over from another catch-and-drive. It followed an earlier moment of restraint, having chosen to decline a run-in from an opportunity he’d created halfway out.
Sheffield Tigers finally got their lineout right before the break, their hooker returning the favour with a catch-and-drive to make it 14–7 at half-time.

The second half was absolutely scoreless, dominated by turnovers, defence, and mud mud glorious mud (some frozen). Late on, Sheffield Tigers fluffed two chances, one closer than the veneer of a Greenland welcome committee to a US envoy.
Defence won the day. Oscar’s body count was particularly high, but Sheffield Tigers might feel they deserved a draw. Hard cheese.
