ROSSENDALE RUFC
Tynedale are making their first visit to Mari Pits, Rawtenstall, Rossendale.
Rossendale RUFC won promotion from Regional 1 North West last season, scoring almost 1,000 points in the process.

ROSSENDALE HISTORY
Founded in 1969, Rossendale Rugby Union Football Club fields three sides on a Saturday, each of which plays in a league or association fixture, and the club also has thriving Colts, and Juniors and Minis section on Sundays.
WHERE IS ROSSENDALE
Rossendale RUFC is based in Rawtenstall, Rossendale, Lancashire.
Rossendale is a group of towns situated around 30 miles north of Manchester and around 30 miles south-east of Preston.
STAGS AND DALES TODAY.
TWO STAGS
Rossendale RUFC’s nickname is ‘STAGS. It is reported that this name was inherited from Rossendale’s soccer team, Rossendale United who had been based in Dark Lane’s district called Staghills. Before the houses had been built the area had been forested with deer aplenty.
West Hartlepool RFC have ‘STAGS’ (2nd XV) and ‘BUCKS’ (3rd XV), for more obscure reasons.
TWO DALES
The Battle of the Dales in our League usually involves Tynedale and Wharfedale from Yorkshire. Our spectators shout ‘Tyne’ in support, (after the river?) whilst our Yorkshire friends call ‘Dale’ (‘Wharfe’ would be a mouthful). Reports on Rossendale’s matches all refer to ‘Dale’ (We assume ‘Irwell’ would not be easy or relevant).
HAMISH HASTIE
A few old-timers who were watching the Tynedale v Rossendale National 2 (North) League match on Saturday 4th. October 2025 at Tynedale Park, and who remembered Hamish Hastie, were delighted to find that one of his grandsons, Blair Hastie, was playing as hooker for the visitors that day.
Hamish, who died in 2018 aged 88 years had joined the Cross House veterinary practice in Corbridge in 1958. and played for Tynedale Rugby Club, who were then based in Hexham. He was a fine back-row forward, and captain of the 1st XV in the 1959/60 season.
Blair’s brother Fraser, a Lock, plays for Rotherham Titans in National One. Quite a family!
ROSSENDALE THIS SEASON
Following their step up this season into the National Leagues Rossendale have found life difficult and have been restricted to 3 victories from their 15 matches to date. They will be buoyed, however, by their victory on the road last week and Tynedale will face a side desperate to secure much needed league points.
