A HAT TRICK of tries from Will Roberts helped Tynedale enhance their hopes of a promotion play off
Tynedale dominated the first half to open up a 24-0 lead by half time, and although Fylde came back strongly in the second half, Tynedale hung on for maximum points.
Skipper Oscar Caudle powered over from a scrum on three minutes, before a well judged cross kick from Jake Rodgers sent Roberts in to open his account 11 minutes later,
With Fylde’s Alex Clayton in the sin bin, good work from Joel Broderick helped Seamus Hutton cross for a good try on 18 minutes , and Hutton grabbed his second just before the break to send Tynedale in 24-0 up.
Tynedale were caught cold at the start of the second half when Clayton went over straight from the kick off, but Roberts immediately charged over from inside his own half for a superb second try
Ben Gould peeled off a maul for a Fylde try on 45 minutes but slick handling brought Roberts his hat-trick on 66 minutes.
Fylde staged a grandstand finish with late tries from Jordan Dorrington and Leo Gilliland, but it was only enough for a 4-try bonus point,
Where Wingers Dare: Tynedale 34 - Fylde 26
While Charlie Richards performance delivered in spades at No. 8, it was the Tynedale wingers’ five-try haul and also Chris Dixon's win in the 50 / 50 draw, which reaped a very pleasant harvest at Tynedale Park.
First score arrived courtesy of Jake Rogers’ peripheral vision cross-kick finding Will Roberts out wide. Rogers then produced two moments of sublime class, releasing Seamus Hutton with material passes, each taken at pace as Hutton obliterated the Fylde defence without breaking stride.
Yet the standout moment was still to come
.
It was early in the second half, when Roberts delivered a try worthy of the National League highlights video reel. Starting at the half-way, he unleashed a 1973 David Duckham-esque swerve, beating his man, then straightened beautifully to surge down the right wing, gliding past defender after defender before touching down for what must be a contender for individual try of the season.
But, Rogers wasn’t finished. Another piece of attacking magic, this time his one-handed offload straight from the Finn Russell moment last week, which sent Roberts over for his hat-trick. Hutton outside Roberts might have fancied his own third, but, as ever, business is business.
In full fairness, Fylde were outstanding after the break. A score straight from the restart ignited a superb comeback, as relentless pressure forced Tynedale into conceding penalties and tries, turning what had looked like a commanding first-half lead into a tense finish with Wearmouth's kick to touch.
So, it was an excellent first half for Tynedale, who may be accused of conceding momentum to Fylde, but not at the cost of touches of brilliance in the second half.
Five points secured, and Tynedale now sit second in the league.
