Match Report taken from "The Rugby Paper":-
AN excellent performance in gusty conditions saw Tynedale outgun Macclesfield to put themselves in the driving seat for a promotion play off.
Three first half tries from Ben Haigh paved the way for a hard-earned win which thrilled Tynedale director of rugby Peter Southern.
Southern said: “I was delighted with the way we performed, especially in the second half against the strong wind. The hard work and dedication of the coaching staff as well as the players has really paid dividends.
“We still have some tough games to come, three of them away from home, but confidence is high after this win against a good Macclesfield side.”
Trailing 24-0 at half time, Macclesfield struggled to get back into the game in the second period even with wind advantage. They felt they didn’t always get the rub of the green from referee Michael Harris, but didn’t help themselves by twice being marched back 10 metres for back chat.
The Tynedale forwards were well on top in the first period, spurred on by lock Graeme Dunn, making his 350th appearance for the Northumbrians.
Forward power led to Haigh powering over for the first try on six minutes, and the battling hooker was over again on 19 minutes, before completing his hat-trick on 27 minutes in a play which earned Macclesfield’s Louis Townsend a spell in the sin bin.
All three tries were converted by Jake Rodgers, who added a penalty just before the break to give the home side a good cushion.
Macclesfield started chipping away at the deficit just three minutes into the second half when Manu Shute went over unopposed for a good try wide out, well converted by Harry Oliver.
However, an excellent break by Tom Mann - who had a great game - brought the bonus point try for James Telford on 53 minutes to take the score to 29-7.
Macclesfield were pressing hard, but foundering on solid Tynedale defence, until Harry Oliver broke away on the hour for a try he converted himself. He could have had another when he pulled off a good interception soon after, but Mr Harris had spotted another infringement.
Tynedale were penned in their own 22 for long periods, but held firm, and on 74 minutes, a superb break by Will Miller, supported by Seamus Hutton, took Tynedale to the Macclesfield line, where Joe Hanning finished the job for Rodgers to convert,
Tynedale produced a powerful performance at Corbridge to secure a 36 - 14 victory over fellow high-flyers Macclesfield, claiming the full five points and strengthening their grip on second place in a fiercely competitive league.
Tyne struck early and set the tone for the afternoon. Tries after 6, 19 and 27 minutes, all converted by Rogers, put the hosts firmly in control. Rogers then added a penalty on the stroke of half-time, sending Tynedale into the break with a commanding 24–0 lead.
That first-half advantage proved decisive. Playing into a strong breeze, Macclesfield were unable to register a score before the interval, while Tynedale showed control to build their cushion.
Macclesfield responded with two converted tries early in the next quarter of the second half, briefly threatening to close the gap. But Tynedale, now facing the same difficult conditions, showed their determination with further tries on 58 and 74 minutes to close out the contest.
The Tynedale scrum was a major factor, particularly in the second half. While the referee awarded fewer penalties than is often the case with a dominant pack, the relentless forward pressure did steadily drain Macclesfield’s energy and this really helped Tynedale to control key moments in the second half.
In open play Miller was outstanding (yet again), repeatedly breaking through first-phase defence, while Tom Mann delivered a towering performance at full-back.
The result is a significant one with five points for Tynedale, none for Macclesfield, and another statement win in what continues to be a fantastic season for a superb Tyne squad.
