Billingham won at least 80% of possession against the diagonal wind in the first half, but it was Tynedale who took their early opportunities.
Keller linked with Leslie, who exploited the two-on-one to send Walker over for the opening try on 13 minutes. That was followed by Nankivell’s deft footwork and then a pick-up try (Grant converting) on 21. Keller then charged for the corner flag and did well to stay in, resulting in Richards grabbing a try on 25 to make it 0–17. Tynedale’s three tries came from incidental opportunities, but all were well taken.
Billingham threw the kitchen sink at Tynedale and got themselves back into it, with tries on 35 and 40 minutes to close it to 12–17 at half-time, and very much game on for the home team.
The second half showed it. All of a sudden Tynedale shunted every scrummage and got the front foot in every play. Leslie extended the lead with a brilliant solo on 46 minutes, before Miller (converted by Grant) and replacement fly-half Rodgers’ super try (again converted by Grant) pushed it out to 12–36 by the hour.
Billingham did respond on 67 minutes to make it 19–36, but by then they looked spent and Tynedale were in control. Broderick (who covered every blade of astro) crossed for a brilliant team interplay try on 69, Walker added his second on 75 (Rodgers converting), Telford followed on 77 (again converted by Rodgers), and Baines broke from distance to finish his interception on 80 minutes (Rodgers again converting) to take it to a devastating 62–19 win.
Great tries in the second half, and replacement scrum-half Baines was like a sevens international.
Credit to Billingham as well, who remain a proper rugby incubator producing local talented players, and that first-half performance showed exactly why.
NB. A special mention to the Tyne back row (yet again), particularly the industrious Miller and powerful Roberts, but there are many others in this competitive squad.
See you next Saturday for the Clash of the Dales.
