Chris Leslie's Match Report:-
Fylde 29-41 Tynedale
Tynedale returned from royal Lytham St Annes on the Lancashire coast with an excellent 41–29 victory over Fylde, scoring six tries in a challenging NW windy but entertaining contest in which the visitors showed considerable determination, particularly during a difficult period early in the second half.
Tynedale made the perfect start. Straight from the kick-off, the visitors secured a penalty turnover, and Leslie kicked into the corner. The forwards executed a catch and drive, with Keller crossing inside the opening minute. The conversion gave Tynedale a 7–0 lead.
Fylde responded with an unconverted try after 11 minutes, but Archie Rattray crossed for Tynedale's second after 23 minutes, the conversion extending the lead to 14–5.
The hosts were denied a certain try if it weren’t for Mann’s superb covering tackle on the line. However they eventually reduced the deficit to 14–10 after 37 minutes before Tynedale landed a penalty on the stroke of half-time to lead 17–10.
Fylde started the second half strongly, scoring a converted try after 44 minutes to level matters at 17–17. The home side were now enjoying the better of proceedings and, for a period, looked capable of taking control.
Tynedale needed a response, and Jack Edwards (who is now a regular selection for good reason) restored the visitors' lead after 50 minutes with an unconverted try, before Will Graham crossed five minutes later to extend the advantage to 27–17.
Another regular, young Lythgoe, went off with what appeared to be an injury, was replaced by Ted Fletcher with Leslie going into the centre. Leslie though immediately took a pass at first receiver and blasted through a gap only to be dragged just short of the try line… Joe Hanning who was particularly effective throughout, carrying strongly and making valuable ground when Tynedale were under pressure. His contribution was rewarded after 63 minutes when he crossed for the visitors' fifth try, the conversion taking the score to 34–17.
Fylde responded with a converted try after 67 minutes to reduce the deficit to 34–24, but Tynedale maintained their attacking approach, and Will Ainsley crossed after 73 minutes. The conversion extended the lead to 41–24.
The hosts scored a final unconverted try after 78 minutes, leaving Tynedale deserved winners by 41–29.
Tynedale's right winger Edwards deserves particular mention for some excellent carrying whenever the opportunity arose. Hanning was equally influential, particularly in the physical exchanges and at crucial stages of the contest.
The most encouraging aspect of Tynedale's performance was their response after Fylde had drawn level and appeared to be gaining the upper hand. Rather than allowing the home side to dictate proceedings, Tynedale showed the determination needed to regain control, scoring 17 unanswered points between the 50th and 63rd minutes.
A good team performance, six tries and five league points from a difficult away fixture. Plenty to be pleased about, although conceding five tries will undoubtedly give the coaches some concern.
