SATURDAY 31st OCTOBER 2026
WHARFEDALE RUFC V TYNEDALE RFC

This Saturday the 1st XV travel down to North Yorkshire to take on our ‘near neighbours’ and old friends, Wharfedale RUFC, in the latest “Battle of the Dales”.

While the 1stXV are on the road our Raiders make the extra short journey to play Ponteland 1stXV in the second of successive ‘top-of-the-table’ clashes in the Counties North East One League. The Centurions now have an equally short journey in a re-arranged match at Winlaton.

At Tynedale Park we are pleased to welcome Alnwick Lions who play our Hadrians.

We also, of course, extend a warm welcome to the match officials attending Tynedale Park.

Wherever you are ENJOY your rugby everyone.

THE TWO DALES
The Wharfedale club has been based at Wharfeside Avenue, Threshfield, since 1958.

The two clubs are long-standing friends, and are similar in many respects.

Based in rural surroundings both clubs have strong support from the local farming communities and the same rugby ethos and ideas on the way the game should be played.

TYNEDALE v WHARFEDALE LEAGUE HISTORY
Since 1987 there have been 33 League matches between the two 1st XV teams. Wharfedale have won 12 times (722points); Tynedale have won 20 times (836 points), with one match drawn.

The two clubs continued to play friendly pre-season matches when the 1st XV’s were in different leagues.

There have also been almost as many Raiders v Foresters competitive matches in that time.
One effect of this season’s new RFU rules, allowing 2ndXV’s to enter the National League system means that Foresters now play in Counties Yorkshire 2, whilst the Raiders are in Counties North-East 1 so the teams are unlikely to meet very often in the future.

TYNEDALE v WHARFEDALE TODAY
Although matters on the field could be quite different, any spectator travelling to Wharfedale RFC on Saturday will be sure of a friendly and hospitable welcome - even in the shed.

When Tynedale played at Wharfedale in January 2015 the home team’s match programme, the Green Machine, pointed out that the referee for that match had not been to Threshfield before, and said that ”he will therefore never have had such an easy ride, as long as he remembers to heed and implement the expert and impartial advice coming from the Tarmac shed”.

One Tynedale player familiar to Wharfedale supporters is Tom Mann who transferred from one Dale to another in October 2024. Tom has starred for Tynedale, making 10 appearances in 2024/25, 15 last season and 7 so far in 2026/27.

HOW DID THE TWO 1STXV’s FARE LAST SEASON?

One of the Greens’ home wins was a 24-12 defeat of the Champions, b][Sheffield RUFC[/b] - who only lost two matches all season. Oddly, the other Sheffield loss was to Otley 42-36 on 25th. April 2026 when Tyne were winning at Threshfield!

Wharfedale will be anxious to take revenge for their 50-19 defeats by Tynedale at Corbridge last September. and the 20-45 loss at Threshfield in April.

WHARFEDALE THIS SEASON

Wharfedale have had a difficult start to the season and currently prop the table up.

Wharfedale have certainly been badly affected by injuries to key players and have only recorded the one victory although this was a convincing home victory over high-flying Preston Grasshoppers who are currently 4th in the league.

Tynedale, of course. know very well the challenge facing them this Saturday against a Wharfedale side, spurred on by a vociferous crowd, and unwilling to take a single backward step.
