Centurions march on into a new decade

The Centurions returned to action after the festive break and travelled to Winlaton with a strong side. Facing the elements and the upward slope in the first half the Xmas break seemed to have taken its toll when Winlaton opened the scoring when the scorer ran through a weak Tynedale defence from the back of a scrum to run in an easy try which was converted.
The visitors then came to life and on 17 mins Brogan Miller powered his way over to open Tynedales account, Adam Todhunter added the conversion to level the score. On 25 mins Winlaton regained the lead taking a quick penalty which caught out the Tynedale defence to score an opportunist try.
The Centurions drew level when the stylish Adam Todhunter glided through the Winlaton defence and fed Shaun Abraham's who scored a try out to the left of the posts.

The Centurions then produced their best period of play before the break and Phil Scandle and Ed Weir gained an upper hand in the scrums to earn Tynedale some good possession and with support from James Sample, Callum Foxcroft, the ageless Ian Charlton and Jason Armstrong they began to dominate the experience Winlaton forwards giving scrum half Josh Turnbull some quick clean ball which he was using to devastating effect and the best move of the game, with Todhunter and Martyn Hutton linking in midfield, allowed Ben Common to cross the line out wide on the left to score a magnificent try.
The Centurions scored a further try following a break by Olly Hillary from a set piece was carried on by Todhunter to allow Common to score in the left corner again to give Tynedale a 22- 12 lead at half time.

After the restart Tynedale scored on 45 mins when Hillary produced one of his trademark breaks to break through the home defence to increase the lead. Tynedale scored again on 68 mins when Brogan Miller was driven over the line with support from Rory Craney to score his second try.
Ten minutes later Hillary scored his second try to seemingly leave the result in no doubt, however Wnlaton had other ideas and scored a converted try to keep the game alive and pressed the Tynedale line for the closing minutes and only great defensive work by Ryan Laverty and captain Jake Sloan, aided by Andy Purves prevented them from crossing the Tynedale line and reducing the arrears, and Tynedale were hanging on at the end and the referees whistle blew with Winlaton pressing the Centurions line.
A good win in the end with Ed Weir and Phil Scandle being judged joint man of the match with most of the team producing performances to gain a hard earned result against a combative Saxons team.
