Centurions pip league leaders

This game started in a blizzard that eventually relented to sleet showers on a driving gale and left both teams soaked and frozen, so much so that two players had to leave the field with the early onset of hypothermia. That they were able to produce an exciting game showing pace and power is a credit to everyone involved.

Playing against the storm in the first half, the Centurions had to defend heroically for long periods, and were helped by try saving tackles by Jake Sloan, Rory Dixon and both wingers on debut, Darwin Currie and Zac Walsh. Several drives to the line by the big Berwick pack were halted by last ditch defending by the forwards with Ed Weir, Rory Craney and George Hendry putting their bodies on the line.

The pressure had to tell after this prolonged battering and Berwick managed to force their way over from close range wide out for two tries. In a rare foray upfield Andy Harvey, Ian Charlton and Oliver Hillary linked to drive close. James Sample drove over from the resulting ruck but the referee was unsighted and couldn't allow a try. At half time the Centurions were hopeful having restricted the lead to 10-0.

The introduction of brothers Cam and James Grant with the help of the storm gods saw Tynedale begin to get the upper hand after the break. Indeed James dived on a loose ball to regain possession, link with Jacob Brown who, despite being held, kept the move alive and brother Cam brushed aside defenders to score from 20 metres.

A fine move from half way by Berwick restored their lead before centres Micky Hall and Martyn Hutton combined well in midfield and Seth Kippax-Jones glided over from close range.

As both teams tired deep into the second half and players began to lose feeling in their hands mistakes began to be made and, from a dropped ball the Bears scored from long range. This was immediately answered when Ethan McLeod landed a thumping tackle in midfield resulting Callum Foxcroft picking up to feed Dixon who showed his power to crash through the covering defence for a fine try that gave Tynedale the lead for the first time in the match.

Dan Heppell had a chance to extend that lead following a brilliant run from halfway but a fine try saving tackle prevented him from reaching over. Berwick were able to clear and a late flourish led to a try half way to touch. A difficult conversion into the wind was just missed. The home side had one final play from the resulting kick off and managed to work the ball to half way when an excellent tackle from Ollie Murrell loosened the ball and a relieved Tynedale were able to hack the ball to touch for the final whistle.

This was outstanding game given the atrocious conditions with the Centurions able to pip the League leaders. The key difference was that Cam Grant was able to convert all four tries whilst Berwick only managed one conversion from their five, the narrowest of margins.
