The Centurions produced a fine performance against a very useful Novos team to record their first league win of the season.
They dominated in the scrummage with the front row of Lewis Sparke, Brogan Millar and Ed Weir always on top in the tight and able to contribute around the park. Novos edged the line out with two fine jumpers contesting at all times but Ian Charlton produced a decent supply at the front.
A driving scrum in the visitors 22 metre allowed number 8 Hugh Holland-Creaven to drive forward. The half-backs of Chris Kerr and Jake Sloan, generally having an armchair ride behind the dominant pack, moved the ball swiftly to Oliver Hillary who stormed over. This lead was quickly reduced by a penalty goal.
Full-back Darwin Currie then launched an attack from deep inside his own half, linked with the supporting Dan Heppell, Ethan McLeod and finally Jonny Pape who spied a gap and showed surprising pace to race 20 metres untouched to the line.
Sparke and Weir were prominent in the final scoring move of the half leading to a nice handling move that allowed Donald Stembridge to cross near the posts. The try-scorer added the conversion to make the score 17-3 at the break.
With the introduction of a strong bench of Rory Craney, Adam Telfer, and Phil Scandle the Centurions continued to dominate up front. A short line throw saw Millar driven over in the resulting maul involving forwards and backs. Millar then turned provider after receiving a good ball from the covering Spencer Tolley, feeding Dan Heppell who showed pace and awareness to put in Hillary.
Heppell was involved again down the wing finding the supporting Currie who crossed under the posts. On top now, the rampaging Scandle and Telfer made ground to take the ball close. Switched by Kerr and Sloan, the ball reached Hillary who still had work to do to complete his hat-trick. Stembridge added the conversion to this and the previous try.
The resilient Novos side showed great character and broke clear to score a deserved converted try of their own. From the kick off Tynedale gained possession and Rory Booth was tackled just short. Rob Earnshaw snatched up the ball at pace to crash through several defenders to complete the scoring on the final whistle.
