As the Club ran four senior teams on the day, resources were tight for the Centurions. Only the addition of debutants Allan Hyslop, Nathan Henderson and Alex Anson allowed them to field a full squad. Luckily all three acquitted themselves well in a close game that might have been won but for indiscipline that handed field position and points to the opposition on a regular basis.
The Wearsiders took an early lead when a penalty was moved 10 metres on for backchat and into the range of their useful place-kicking fly-half who gratefully accepted the three points.
A searching kick from number 10 Hyslop took play deep into Sunderland territory. Ryan Laverty brought down the full back and Ed Weir, David Hewison and Robbie Banks arrived quickly in support to set up camp close to the try line. Ben Horncastle tried to dive over, Ian Charlton crossed but was held up before the ball was switched to the promising Anson who forced the ball down and Hyslop added the points.
Tynedale pressed but unnecessary penalties allowed their prodigious kicker to find touch near to the Centurions five metre line. From two of these line outs the much heavier Sunderland forwards to were able to catch, drive and score to give them a lead, 15-7, at the break.
An excellent start to the second half saw the visitors in control and surge into the lead, 21-15. Horncastle looked as though he had scored but the referee brought Tynedale back for a penalty. Jonny Pape righted any wrongs with an unstoppable burst to touch down. Martyn Hutton then repeated the act with a similar drive over brushing aside several would-be tacklers. Hyslop converted both before Josh Scollick and Graeme Hutton were held up short.
The home team weathered this assault and showed patience, firstly converting a penalty, before another offence saw a tap and rumble on, the maul was pulled down and a penalty try awarded.
With a four point deficit the Centurions tried to run the ball from defence with their powerful centres Hutton and Laverty making ground to release Spencer Tolley, Shaun Taylor and Steven Raine who showed pace but were well tackled into touch. Callum Foxcroft provided some quality line out ball but their all out attack could not gain the try their efforts deserved. As they eventually tired another penalty allowed Sunderland in for a late try in this close encounter.
