The Centurions returned to winning ways in this Candy League game with a smooth win against opponents hit by injury and first team call ups.
They took an early lead after Spencer Tolley ran strongly from full back. Excellent support from forwards James Brown, Ethan McLeod and Ed Weir ended with the ball being slipped to the thunderous Jason Armstrong who crashed over.
Good work from Josh Scollick and Graeme Hutton saw another clearing kick returned with interest leading to a penalty. A quick tap allowed Jonny Pape to burst through a startled defence and score, Henry White converting nicely.
Ian Charlton created another before half time, handling twice in a move from his own half to link with Martyn Hutton, White and Allan Hyslop in a stylish play. Hyslop cleverly kicked through and followed up to touch down and leave the score 0-17 at the break.
Cameron Crawford stole the ball at a ruck and released Ben Harris on a storming run from halfway to be held just short. The ubiquitous Brogan Millar was first on the scene and quick ball was recycled via the soft hands of John Standish to the quicksilver Charlie Dodd. The winger beat all defenders on the outside to score a debut try in the corner, leaving White to land a difficult conversion.
One of several powerful runs by Owen Shield took him close to the line and Armstrong was on hand to grab his second. Unfortunately, another ferocious charge by Shield saw him have to leave the field with a nasty arm injury.
To their great credit North Shields hit back and had a good period of pressure leading to two tries of their own. Confusingly, the second of these was scored by Tolley who had sportingly switched sides to cover for an injured Shields player and called for the ball from his erstwhile team-mates!
The scoring was completed by Tynedale when Charlton drove close and released Robbie Binks who dived over allowing White an easy conversion under the posts.
