The dangers of travelling with a paper thin squad were demonstrated when a late withdrawal through illness meant that the Centurions were a man short for this league match against tough opponents.
The home side took full advantage of this disorganised start and were a converted try up in the first five minutes.
Gradually, some sort of order was achieved as Henry Barnes, Jason Armstrong and Jonny Pape all carried powerfully. This allowed half-backs Andy Harvey and Ali Hopps to cleverly direct play, kicking for position, releasing when appropriate, as well as stifling their opposite numbers. Martyn Hutton took advantage of this control, breaking tackles and kicking towards the corner. Winger Josh Schollick chased well and forced a weak clearing kick that spun back over the line allowing Harvey to win the race to dive on the ball and score. Seb Jansen, Shaun Taylor and Chris Woodburn might have added points as they all went close.
P & H were always in the game and they scored a well-worked try through their sharp centre before half-time, taking full advantage of their extra man, to leave the score 14-5.
The second half was evenly contested with both sides working hard in a physical battle. Ian Charlton, showing up well in defence and attack, secured useful ball that was shipped to the flying-machine on the right wing, Alex Anson. Only a desperate high tackle by the full back could prevent a score but the referee correctly awarded a penalty try and handed out a yellow card.
Another converted try stretched the lead of the home side that they looked like holding on to until the final ten minutes when Tynedale realised that Anson's pace was a huge asset. He had a try disallowed before a fine passing movement saw Cameron Crawford draw two defenders and allow the speedster to race over. Just before the end Barnes drove up to the halfway line, the ball was recycled and moved quickly to Anson who again finished smartly and allow the Centurions to secure a last gasp win.
