After being let down by their original league opponents, a friendly game against Blaydon Georgians was arranged at short notice. Early impressions were that the Centurions may have bitten off more than they could chew.
With the help of Storm Darragh, the well-drilled visitors were able to dominate territorially and scored two early tries following deep probing kicks. More may have been conceded but for a huge defensive effort from the whole team with Kael Horton, Seb Jansen and Josh Schollick making heroic, last ditch tackles.
Any Centurions attacks came from their own half as James Brown, Robbie Binks and Michael Ramsay scavenged for scraps of possession allowing the speedy Andy Stembridge, Dan Heppell and Andy Harvey to make rare forays upfield into the teeth of the gale. From one of these breakouts, Jason Armstrong, Jonny Pape and Hugh Holland-Creaven hammered at the line. Just held up, a relieving kick was chased well by the Blaydon winger who won the race to touch down in the corner leaving the score at the break, 0 - 19.
With the storm now behind them, Tynedale came into the game and had several periods of pressure. Dan Tate was able to counter-ruck and set Henry Barnes off on a powerful burst close to the line. Allan Hyslop was the last to test defenders and dived through legs for a deserved try.
The talented visitors were however always dangerous and they broke away from long range to restore their lead. The home side redoubled their efforts and were rewarded when Ian Charlton, seemingly held well short, was able to stretch out a telescopic arm and place the ball on the line. Hyslop skillfully added the points without a tee.
Towards the end Binks and Harvey both dived at a loose ball in the corner but it bobbled clear with no downward pressure applied. The Georgians were able to scramble it away then move it cleverly to their left winger who ran the length of the field to touch down in the opposite corner. Special mention must be made of man-of-the-match Cameron Crawford. Playing out of position, he made an immense contribution all over the field and produced a performance that really deserved to be on the winning side.
Blaydon just had time to add another long range effort right on the final whistle. These two late tries gave a final scoreline that did not reflect huge commitment of the full Tynedale team playing against opponents from two leagues above themselves.
