This was the Centurions first game for four weeks and the rustiness showed in a slow start against a well-drilled Northern outfit who were quickly into their stride.
They punished every mistake and missed tackle to establish a lead of 29-5 by half time. The sole home try followed an excellent line out catch by Pete Forrester, a powerful drive by the forwards with the ball transferred from the industrious Ray Regan to hooker Adam Binks to touch down. Three other attempts by Zak Pearce, Adam Telfer and Phil Scandle were held up on or over the line and any score would have been just reward for the Centurions attempts to get back into the game.
The second period was a much closer affair as Tynedale's forwards gained the upper hand and they camped in the Wanderers 22 metre zone for long periods. The Veterans 2nd row of Dave Nicholls and Gary Laws relished the forward battle as the visitors struggled to release their talented three-quarter line and, when they did, Pearce, Mark Smales and Jake Sloan made try-saving tackles.
Forrester drove powerfully to score a try from a pick up at Number 8 as the home forwards dominated the scrummage. Wingers Tom Shrimpton and James Webb both had fine runs halted close to the line as they supported the rampant pack. Rhys Loughead and Pearce, who both had fine games, never gave up and drove close but were unable to cross the whitewash. An over eagerness to press home the territorial advantage, then saw the Wanderers score a long range interception try then another following hack through and chase.
Undaunted by these setbacks, the home side managed a final effort when a sniping run from the tireless Andy Harvey led to Charlie Rutherford crashing over wide out on the left wing. Pearce added the points with an excellent drop kick.
Whilst the score line was disappointing, the performance and attitude of all players, particularly in the second half, was exemplary.
