A very warm sunny morning at Tynedale Park, we had quite a few turn up for this end of season do, we started with the players taking on the coaches with parents joining in, it started badly for the coaches as the kids are whippet fast and low to the ground, always a good combination to be and a terrible one to face. We (the coaches/parents) pulled off a couple of daring moves which failed to impress the score line but the kids kept running them in. It got a bit more even when more parents joined in and we could just stand in a line across the pitch but normal service was restored when a couple defected to the kids team.
After a brief water stop we carried on puffing and panting (red in the face and sweating buckets) and the grown ups continued their losing ways with the kids running some serious angles of line and offloading with great effect often leaving us staring at a bare patch of grass where they were a moment before. So in true style we resorted to cheating which nearly helped but just saw the kids rack a few more scores.
Once the match was almost over by an embarrassing amount next try wins was called (in a vain attempt to pinch a victory) so the boys duly scored again.
We then wandered over to the main stand ready for awards to be given with a few speeches (mostly short) followed by the presentation of medals for the younger age groups and player/coach awards for the older.
Once this was complete burgers from the BBQ were dished out and I know more than one was consumed with relish after such a torrid time on the playing field.
All in all a fun day for end of season and something to remind us grown ups we will have even more trouble keeping up with them the older they get the faster they will get.
