SATURDAY 10TH OCTOBER 2026
FYLDE RFC V TYNEDALE RFC

Our 1stXV head down the M6 this Saturday as we go to the seaside to play Fylde at Lytham St Annes.

While the 1stXV travel to Fylde our Raiders have an away match at Hartlepool and our Centurions are now at Ponteland in a late change. Our Colts are in Scotland playing North Berwick.

On Friday evening our Hadrians host Morpeth Edwardians in a natch played under lights, kicking off at 7pm.

ENJOY your rugby weekend everyone.

Whenever Tynedale travel to play Fylde there will be many people from both clubs who recall the horrible day of Saturday 25th September 2004 when Tynedale’s young prop Alistair Johnson suffered a serious injury.
It is appropriate that we pause to remember Ali.

FYLDE
In his 2004 book entitled “English Rugby Clubs” Chris Harte, who wrote sports books and contributed to the Rugby Times mused “I must confess that I had often wondered what the word Fylde actually meant. Having now visited the area I am still none the wiser, as every so-called expert gave me a different answer”.
We are reliably informed that the Fylde is a 13-mile (20-kilometre) square-shaped peninsula, bounded by Morecambe Bay to the north, the Ribble estuary to the south, the Irish Sea to the west, and the Bowland hills to the east. Blackpool is to the north and Preston to the east.

What is particularly relevant for the Tynedale team this weekend is that the trip to Fylde RUFC means a 136 mile journey.

THE FIRST EVER MATCH AND LEAGUE FIXTURES
Tynedale’s first visit to Fylde’s Woodlands Memorial Ground was a friendly, played on the 10th February 1990.
Tynedale’s team that day included Mark Richard later President of the Northumberland Rugby Union, plus Gary Taylor and Graham Yates, both now Vice-Presidents of this club. Richard Parker, Martin White and Steven Dunn who also played, have all recently had sons playing for the Blue and Whites.

The two clubs next met on the 13th September 2003, with nine further league matches in the five years up to 19th April 2008. There was a three-season gap when the teams were in different leagues, from then until October 2011, although the teams played in a pre-season match at the Woodlands in August 2008.

When league fixtures were renewed in 2011 in National One the first match at Fylde was a very fine match which the home side won 39-28. Of the Tynedale squad that day two still play for Tynedale – Graeme Dunn and Jonathan Cousin, whilst Chris Harris went on to play for Newcastle Falcons, Gloucester, Scotland, the British Lions and is now back at the Newcastle Red Bulls. Hamish Smales referees in the Premiership. In the Fylde team was Sam Beaumont at No.8, who is the son of the Fylde and International great, Bill Beaumont. On the home team bench was Tom Lavelle, who had played for Tynedale when at University.

ALL LEAGUE RESULTS OVER THE YEARS - TYNEDALE v FYLDE
A total of 31 league matches have been played. One drawn.
Fylde WON 15 Points for 741
Tynedale WON 15 Points for 713
All very very close.

HARTLEPOOL RFC
As mentioned earlier our Raiders side travel to plat Hartlepool in the North East Counties One league.

At the start in 1892 Hartlepool Old Boys and the Old Boys Brigade worked closely together, then they split in the late 1920’s to leave Hartlepool Old Boys as the local team.
After the second World War premises were purchased for the princely sum of 350 pounds in Friar Terrace. The building was named Mayfield House and the club stayed there until the purchase of Mayfield Park in 1968 and the subsequent move to its present headquarters in 1970 in Easington Road.
The change from Hartlepool Old Boys took place on June 15th 1978 at a Special General Meeting. Hartlepool Old Boys RFC then became known as Hartlepool Rugby Football Club

The club played in Durham & Northumberland Div.3 in 2008, then were promoted to Durham & Northumberland Div.2 in 2016 and 2022. That league is now North East Counties 1, where they meet Tynedale Raiders today.

FYLDE THIS SEASON

Fylde have had a mixed start to their season, winning 2 and losing 3 of their 5 matches .

Currenty sit two places below Tynedale in 9th place, with 5 league points separating the sides.

Fylde are currently the lowest point scorers in our league, most unusually for a normally free-scoring side – let’s hope it stays like that till next weekend.
