RIP

J.M. (JIMMY) BELL

We are sorry to report that Jim Bell, who was an Honorary Life Member of Tynedale RFC, died in hospital on Sunday 2nd December 2018, aged 78 years.

Jimmy played for the 1stXV in the 1960’s, coached and managed the Colts after he retired from playing, and as Chairman of the Ground Committee worked on the grounds himself and oversaw the work of the various groundsmen at the club for many years. The club recognised all these efforts by making him an Honorary Life Member.

Jimmy attended school at St. Mary’s in Hexham, then went to board at St. Joseph’s School in Dumfries. It was here that he learned to play rugby, and excelled, representing the South of Scotland at U18 level.

Jimmy joined Tynedale RFC in 1959, playing in the back-row, mainly as a No.8, and he played for the club right through the 1960’s. His last 1stXV game was at Kendal in October 1971, but he would play anywhere to get a game, and his final match for the club was actually for the 4thXV on the 22nd January 1972 when he played in the centre against Percy Park on Broad Close, Hexham - and scored a try!
As a rugby player his style of play reflected his general character - quiet, unassuming, loyal and dedicated. But, under that benign exterior lay a fierce competitor and an awesome tackler.

Jimmy had two older siblings, a sister Mary, and a brother Tony who has been a wonderful support for Jimmy during his recent years of illness.

The funeral took place at the West Road Crematorium, Newcastle at 10.30 am on Thursday 13th December 2018 and afterwards at the Tynedale RFC clubhouse, Corbridge.
