This Saturday we are back down into Yorkshire for the third successive Saturday for our final match of the season against our old friends Otley. This match is a re-arranged fixture, with the original scheduled for 21st January being a victim of our winter weather.

OTLEY’S GOUND - CROSS GREEN
The Cross Green ground hosted the famous North 21-9 victory over the All Blacks in 1979. The North were the only team to beat the New Zealanders on that 11 match tour. Otley also hosted the North v Australia match in 1988 and the Italy v USA tie in the 1991 Rugby World Cup.

OTLEY’S FAMOUS RESIDENTS
Two famous personalities who were born in the town were Thomas Chippendale in 1718, and even more familiar to rugby fans, Mike Tindall, (b.1978), the Rugby World Cup winning centre who is married to Zara (nee Phillips), the King’s niece.
The rugby club's junior section has produced two English International scrum-halfs, Nigel Melville (b.1961) – now Director of Professional Rugby for the RFU, and Danny Care (b.1987), recently in the England squad and the holder of 79 England caps.

PREVIOUS TYNEDALE/OTLEY MEETINGS
The two clubs first played each other in a “friendly” on the 16th February 1980 at Cross Green, with Otley winning by a point.

An extract from the match programme gives the selected teams:-

Another four friendly club matches between the clubs, pre-dating the introduction of league rugby in England in 1987, resulted in four further victories for Otley.

FIRST EVER LEAGUE MATCH
On the 12th September 1987 the very ever first league match for Tynedale was against Otley, and took place at Cross Green in North Division One. Otley won 24-0; their sixth successive win against Tynedale.
THEN THE TIDE TURNED SLIGHTLY:-.
1988-89 Tynedale 19 Otley 6 but-
1989-90 Otley 13 Tynedale 9

Pilkington Cup - 8th October 1994
Tynedale were still in North Division One. Otley had risen two levels higher, to National League Three, yet Tynedale won 29-28 at Tynedale Park.
National Division One
Tynedale and Otley next met in National Division One in the 2009-2010 season, on 12th September 2009, after Tynedale had won promotion in 2000 and again in 2008.
Tynedale held the upperhand in National One with three Tynedale wins and one draw.
Otley 23 Tynedale 23
Tynedale 40 Otley 17
Tynedale 25 Otley 18
Otley 24 Tynedale 38
Otley were relegated from National One in 2011 along with Launceston and Redruth. Tynedale suffered a similar fate in 2015 – so, we met again in National Two (North) in the 2015-2016 season..

2019-2020 Otley 16 Tynedale 13
2022-2023 Tynedale 22 Otley 25
In league matches – Tynedale Won 10, Otley Won 6, 2 Draws

At the end of the Covid truncated 2019-2020 season Otley were perhaps unfortunate to be relegated from National 2 North along with Scunthorpe and Preston Grasshoppers but they hastily returned when they finished Northern Premier champions last season.
The last time the two teams met at Cross Green was on 4th January 2020 when Otley took a narrow 16-13 victory, two Otley tries in two minutes midway through the second half separating the sides. .
The Tynedale squad that day was :-
Forwards: Hughes, Batey, Caudle, Dunn, Cousin, Magowan, J Richards, Clarke
Backs: Outson, Rodgers, Pike, Miller, Checksfield, Hutton, Pascoe
Replacements: Harvey, Carmichael, Haigh, R Dunn, Grant

THIS SEASON

In the fixture between the clubs earlier this season at Tynedale Park Otley edged the match with a ‘last-play’ drop goal at the death taking the victory.

Otley have had an outstanding campaign back in National Two North and currently sit in 4th position – 3 places and 12 points above Tynedale with an extra match still to play. Otley’s home record has been particularly impressive only losing out to Hull Ionians and champions Sedgley Park (last week).
Otley will be determined to finish the season on a high and in particular secure the one victory which will ensure their 4th position – another tough match is expected.

The Otley results this season have been:-
Sedgley Park 38 Otley 15

Sedgley Park promoted from our league.
Harrogate and Blaydon relegated from our league.
Leeds Tykes and Hull relegated into our league.
Billingham and Lymm promoted into our league.
Three teams leaving our league and four teams coming in – to keep the number of teams in our league the same it is likely that Chester will be transferred out of our league and will play in National Two West next season.
