PRESTON GRASSHOPPERS RFC v TYNEDALE RFC
Saturday 14th February 2026 (KO 2.30pm)
This Saturday our 1stXV head south-west down the M6 into Lancashire to take on our old friends Preston Grasshoppers.

Unfortunately the scheduled opponents for the Raiders and Hadrians have had to pull out. Novos have however, at late notice, agreed to bring a side to Tynedale Park to play a combined Raiders/Hadrians side. This match will kick off at 2pm with the Calcutta Cup match being shown on our big screens in the clubhouse afterwards. Well done Novos!!

The Colts play at Carlisle in the Border Cup while the Centurions have a planned weekend off.

PLEASE - NO HACKING.
On the 28th September 1869 a meeting was held at the Bull Hotel, Preston at which the following resolution was passed:-
‘That a club be at once formed in Preston to play football with the Rugby Rules of the game but without hacking. That the club be called ‘The Preston Grasshoppers.’

So, the Grasshoppers, founded in 1869 became one of the oldest clubs in the North West of England. Not quite as old as the original Liverpool of Liverpool St. Helens (1857), Manchester (1860) or Sale (1861), but well ahead of New Brighton (1875), Macclesfield (1877) and Waterloo (1882), in the matter of years.

For comparison, the oldest clubs in the North-East are Darlington RFC (1863), Durham City (1872) and Percy Park (1872).

THE GRASSHOPPER NAME
Tynedale Rugby Club had a Grasshoppers team, originally an U21 side, from 1983 for 25 years, until they were re-named Centurions (the 3rd then 4th XV) in 2008. The new name was much more attuned to Tyne’s local roots and history.
But, why was the name ‘Grasshoppers’ chosen for Preston? Because, amongst the founders of the Preston club were several old boys of Cheltenham College. That school had a game ‘Fireflies v. Grasshoppers’. Is that a good enough reason? Well, it has endured, and famously!

PRESTON GRASSHOPPERS v TYNEDALE
The two clubs first met in season 1979/80 and have played 35 times since, with Tynedale winning 22 of those matches. Grasshoppers have 12 wins, with one match drawn.

Of the 33 games played 25 have been League matches;-

PRESTON GRASSHOPPERS THIS SEASON
The ‘Hoppers have had another mixed, inconsistent season and sit in 11th position with 14 more league points than Rossendale who currently occupy the second bottom relegation place and 7 more league points than Hull who currently occupy the relegation play-off position.
Tynedale will be expecting another close hard-fought match against a side looking to avoid getting dragged into the relegation places.
