SEDGLEY TIGERS PROGRESS SINCE 1987 – AN AMAZING JOURNEY
When the Courage Leagues began Sedgley Park were placed in North West 2 (level 8), from which they gained promotion at the first attempt. They then remained in North West 1 for seven years. Promotions then followed for three successive years.
In Tynedale’s first season in Nat.3 (North) in season 2000-2001 the teams in the league were: Aspatria, Bedford Athletic, Doncaster, Dudley Kingswinford, Liverpool/St. Helens, Morley, New Brighton, Nuneaton, Sandal, Sedgley Park, Stourbridge, Tynedale, Walsall and Whitchurch.
Sedgley finished second in National 3 (North), behind Stourbridge, and were promoted after winning a play-off against Launceston by 40-23.
In 2003-2004 they won National 2 and were promoted with Nottingham to National 1 (now the Championship), their sixth promotion since 1987.
Between 2004-2009 the Tigers enjoyed five seasons at level 2, playing the likes of Northampton Saints, Harlequins, Exeter Chiefs, Bristol and Leeds Carnegie but in 2008/09 the RFU changed the rules halfway through the season, and decided to reduce the numbers of teams at level 2. Five teams were therefore relegated to National One at the end of the season. This meant that Esher (61 Points), Sedgley Park (34), Newbury (27), Otley (21) and Manchester (17) were all relegated.
In National One, at level three, the Tigers continued playing fixtures against Tynedale from 2009 until 2013 after Tynedale had been promoted in 2008.
In 2013-14 the Tigers were relegated. Tynedale just survived, but the clubs were re-united in 2015-2016 when Tynedale were also relegated.
Since being relegated Sedgley have narrowly missed out on promotion back to National One on several occasions and have twice lost out in end-of-season playoffs. In 2015-2016, having finished runners-up to Macclesfield, they lost 24-0 in a play-off, beaten by Old Albanians, and in 2017-2018, after Tigers had finished second to Sale, they lost 40-31 to Chinnor in the end-of-season play-off. Consequently Sedgley and Tynedale have now continued to play each other for seven successive seasons.
All in all an amazing story, with six promotions, one unfair relegation, one relegation and two lost play-offs. What a journey and look where they are now – headed for promotion!
A HISTORY OF TYNEDALE v SEDGLEY PARK MATCHES
Tynedale first played Sedgley Park on 21st September 1996 in a North 1 fixture which was the 100th league match that each of the clubs had played after leagues had been introduced in 1987. The game was away at Whitefield, Manchester, and Sedgley won that match 36-20. Sedgley Park had played against 43 opponents in that time, because of their quick promotions.
The results of all 24 matches between the two clubs since then have been:-

Tynedale fared pretty well against Sedgley over the years, until 2021!
The last time the two teams met at Tynedale Park on 9th April 2022 Tynedale suffered a heavy 14-45 defeat.
The Tynedale squad that day was:-
Forwards White, Batey, Carmichael, Dunn, Wearmouth, Bell, Cousin, Blackburn
Backs Outson, Rodgers, Todhunter, Miller, Clark, West, Leslie
Replacements Caudle, Johnston, Stanwix, Robson, Scott
This Season
Tynedale gave one of their better performances when the two clubs met earlier this season on November 12th, losing 28-33. Tyne gave a storming second half performance after being 26-7 down at the break and were perhaps only denied victory when their attacking lineout uncharacteristically mal-functioned in the dying minutes.
This season the league leadership has been very much a two-horse race with Fylde competing with Sedgley Park for the one promotion spot. This race has, perhaps, been decided over the past two weeks with Tynedale defeating Fylde and the two contestants drawing their match last Saturday. Sedgley Park are now undefeated with only six games remaining and if not quite champions-elect they definitely are now firm favourites.
