Tynedale Rugby Club bid a very warm welcome to our old friends and near-neighbours Blaydon, who visit Tynedale Park for our last home match of the 2021-2022 season.
This week’s match marks the return of local derby rugby to Tynedale Park for the first time since the 2017-2018 season, with Blaydon’s relegation at the end of that season keeping us apart for several seasons.

Blaydon’s promotion in 2001 from North 1 followed Tynedale’s promotion in 2000, the previous season.
Then Blaydon’s 2007 promotion beat Tynedale by one year with Blaydon winning promotion to National One and Tynedale following in 2008.
Tynedale were demoted in 2015 from National One and Blaydon followed closely in 2017.
The two clubs’ paths through the leagues have, eerily, followed each other closely – both up and down!
Generally, the two clubs, whilst great rivals, often bring out the best in each other on the playing field, and in their aspirations too. Long may that rivalry continue.

As mentioned above, the last league match at Tynedale Park between the sides was in the 2017-2018 season on 23rd December 2017 when Tynedale edged it 32-31 despite being behind for the majority of the match.
The Tynedale squad that day was :-
BACKS Outson, Taylor, Pike, Miller, Bramwell, Walker, Spencer
FORWARDS Elliott, Frankland, Grant, Snowdon, Dunn, Cousin, Cairns, Powell
REPLACEMENTS Batey, Wilkinson, Mills, Smith, Parker

This season’s fixture at Blaydon on 18th December 2021 was a disappointment for Tynedale losing out 19-14. On the day Tynedale were unable to match Blaydon’s early intensity with the home side going into a 14-0 lead after only 10 minutes, and despite Tyne coming back into the match and having what seemed an obvious try disallowed Blaydon held out to be worthy winners.
Tynedale squad was:-
BACKS:Outson, Blackett, Todhunter, Miller, Clark, Pike, Cooke
FORWARDS: White, Lowdon, Haigh, Wearmouth, Dunn, Cousin, Bell, Wainwright
REPLACEMENTS: Scott, Carmichael, Hanning, Robson, West

Blaydon who were promoted back into National 2 North at the start of this season after being relegated at the end of the 2017-2018 season have not found their return to National League rugby plain-sailing despite their ability to score some scintillating tries.
After a poor start Blaydon’s exciting brand of rugby has brought some better results and by all accounts some good performances with victories this year against Hull Ionians, Sheffield Tigers and Chester (last Saturday).

The lads will be well aware of the threat Blaydon possess and will expect a typical tough highly competitive derby encounter.
