TYNEDALE RFC v FYLDE RFC
Saturday 21st February 2026 (KO 2pm)
WELCOME TO TYNEDALE PARK
This Saturday we welcome all the players, officials and supporter of Fylde who are always welcome guests to Tynedale Park.
We also welcome to Tynedale Park our friends from Alnwick who bring their 1stXV to play our Raiders in the semi-final of the Northumberland Senior Cup.
Also at the Club this Saturday will be a women’s touring party from the University of Alberta, Canada who will play a match against Newcastle University Women, kicking off at 12.15.
We also, of course, extend a very warm welcome to all of this week’s match officials.
To EVERYBODY - Enjoy your day!
OLD BOY CONNECTIONS
Fylde play in claret, gold and white, which were really the colours of HUDDERSFIELD OLD BOYS (Huddersfield RUFC after 1946). It seems to be a mystery why these colours were chosen, but they have remained the same as Huddersfield’s ever since, but with a different design.
In season 1934/35 Fylde RFC was strengthened by the merger with BLACKPOOL OLD BOYS.
The ‘Old Boy’ tag became something of an anachronism for open rugby clubs, so for most clubs the suffix has been dropped over the years.
WOODLANDS MEMORIAL GROUND AS SEEN BY CHRIS HARTE
In his 2004 book entitled “English Rugby Clubs” Chris Harte, who wrote sports books and contributed to the Rugby Times ran the rule over 85 rugby union clubs in England. He looked at such things as Access, Bars, Car-parking, Catering, Club Shop, Comfort and Cleanliness, Staff Attitude, Viewing and Shelter.
He was very impressed with Fylde’s Woodlands Memorial Ground and its facilities, placing it 7th best of the clubs he inspected, with an 82% score. (Tynedale were a more modest 35th with a 73% score)
Harte mused “I must confess that I had often wondered what the word Fylde actually meant. Having now visited the area I am still none the wiser, as every so-called expert gave me a different answer”. The easy explanation given to me was ‘field’, but the most likely is ‘low lying ground between two estuaries’.
Chris Harte commented that, towering over the pitch on the opposite side of the road was the Catholic Church of St Joseph’s. The front noticeboard listing the times of weekly services showed that at 6pm every Saturday there was a Vigil. “For losing rugby players” had been Chris’s immediate irreverent thought.
In his final comments Chris wrote “Although life in the National Leagues has been difficult in recent seasons, the Fylde club have not let their standards drop, which is a good sign for the future”
SIR WILLIAM BEAUMONT
The name of Sir William Beaumont is synonymous with the Fylde club. Bill was a one-club man, who joined Fylde as a 17-year-old in 1969 and stayed until injury forced him to retire in 1982.
He played for England 34 times, 21 times as Captain, captained the British Lions in South Africa. and was Manager of the Lions in New Zealand in 2004. He was Chairman of the Rugby Football Union from 2012 to 2016 and Chairman of World Rugby from 2016 until 2024.
Bill was knighted in 2019.

But, expect the unexpected!
(1) How can Tyne win 45-22 at home in February 2024 then lose by exactly the same score at home in October 2024?
(2) Of those last 11 Fylde v Tynedale matches 5 have been won by the away team. Home advantage means nothing.
(3) Despite a run of five defeats v Hull (away), Macclesfield (home), Sheffield (away), Billingham (away) and Scunthorpe at home last week Fylde have a habit of battling back after setbacks.
THE FIRST EVER MATCH BETWEEN THE CLUBS - 1990
Tynedale’s first visit to Fylde’s Woodlands Memorial Ground was a friendly, played on the 10th February 1990.
Tynedale’s team that day included Mark Richard, President of the Northumberland Rugby Union five years ago, plus Gary Taylor and Graham Yates, both now Vice-Presidents of this club. All three attended the County Legends lunch held three weeks ago at Tynedale Park on 31st January.
Penny Stewart from Alnwick, who is Northumberland’s representative on the RFU also attended that ex-County Players’ lunch. She is now a member of the World Rugby Council which Bill Beaumont had chaired for eight years.
PROMOTION YEAR - 2008
One of Tynedale’s most memorable days came on the 19th April 2008, when after eight seasons in National Division Two (North) the Tyne team eventually won promotion to National League One.
It was a great honour that Bill Beaumont came to present the League trophy to the captain Phil Belgian, and gave medals to the members of the 1stXV squad and the coach Tom Borthwick. (He also came to watch his son Sam, who played for Fylde that day!)
FYLDE THIS SEASON
Fylde, by their own high standards, have probably had a disappointing season to date. Having finished in 4th position last season they are currently in 6th position having fallen away badly after a strong start.
This season it is their normally impressive home form which has let them down, winning only 3 of their 10 home matches to date. Their away form, however, remains good with them winning their first six away matches including impressive victories at Macclesfield and Wharfedale.
Since the turn of the year Fylde have lost all five of their matches although two of these were against high-flying Sheffield and Macclesfield.
Last week’s match was particularly disappointing when they let go a 25 point lead with only 20 minutes to go. Last week, by contrast, Tynedale recovered a 23 point deficit with 4 tries in a 20 minutes second half period.
Whatever the stats show we know we will be in for another close hard-fought encounter as a determined Fylde side look to halt their recent slide.
