For our final league match of the season our 1stXV play the latest episode in “The Battle of the Dales” series as we head south into the Yorkshire Dales to play our old friends and foes Wharfedale. The Raiders will accompany the 1stXV to play against Wharfedale Foresters.
No game at Tynedale Park this Saturday with the Hadrians down the road at Ryton and our Colts over the border again to compete in the Selkirk 7’s.

To everybody - ENJOY your day

HISTORY OF WHARFEDALE RUFC

The Wharfedale club has been based at Wharfeside Avenue, Threshfield, since 1958. The club had been founded in 1932. The first ground had been at Wood Lane and in its formative years the club headquarters included the Wilson Arms and the Black Horse.

The club quickly became a real force in Yorkshire rugby. Through the 1970’s the standard of rugby and the playing record of the club was impressive, and numerous players were rewarded with selections for the County, District and England teams.

There was a meteoric rise through the leagues in the run from 1987 to 1996 which saw the club reach the heady heights of level 3 rugby, after starting at level 7.

Wharfedale then stayed longer in that league, (now National One), than any other club, completing twenty seasons at that level. Survival was not always easy (especially 2011 & 2013 and eventually they were relegated in April 2016.
2023-24 was an important season in the history of Wharfedale Rugby Union Football Club, formerly Upper Wharfedale RUFC, as their first fixture had been played in the autumn of 1923. No precise date is known, but the club celebrated the season as its Centenary year and Tynedale were honoured in being able to play Wharfedale twice in their historic season.

WHARFEDALE & TYNEDALE IN NATIONAL 2 NORTH
Although Tynedale did play Wharfedale (then called Upper Wharfedale) in the pre-league days of the early 80's their paths began to cross more frequently after the introduction of leagues.
The clubs played together in what is now called National 1(level 3) for seven seasons before
they parted company at the end of the 2014-2015 season when Tynedale were relegated into National 2 North. The parting was not for long as Wharfedale suffered the same fate the following season and since the we have played 15 league matches.

24th September 2016 – Tynedale 35 Wharfedale 10
14th January 2017 – Wharfedale 27 Tynedale 3
19th March 2018 - Wharfedale 14 Tynedale 33
21st April 2018 - Tynedale 22 Wharfedale 24
8th December 2018 - Wharfedale 18 Tynedale 3
6th April 2019 - Tynedale 27 Wharfedale 21
26th October 2019 - Wharfedale 27 Tynedale 27
8th February 2020 - Tynedale 26 Wharfedale 34
27th November 2021 - Tynedale 24 Wharfedale 13
2nd April 2022 - Wharfedale 37 Tynedale 42
15th October 2022 - Wharfedale 22 Tynedale 29
28th January 2023 - Tynedale 21 Wharfedale 20

2nd March 2024 - Wharfedale 18 Tynedale 17
6th September 2025 -Tynedale 50 Wharfedale 19

In the last 15 league matches Tynedale have won 8 and Wharfedale have won 6 with one match drawn.
Of those 15 matches 6 have resulted in away wins and 8 in home wins – so not that much home advantage!
Tynedale have won 3 of their 7 away matches -1 match drawn.

“A RIGHT NUISANCE”
Tynedale were, for some time, something of a bogey team for Wharfedale, or as Gordon Brown (not the ex- PM, but the much more famous Gordon, then editor of the Wharfedale match programme) stated “a right nuisance”. N.B. Apart from his work for Wharfedale rugby club and Yorkshire Gordon served ten years as Honorary Treasurer and five years as Honorary Secretary of the Barbarians Rugby Club.

Will Wharfedale’s 1st.XV repay Gordon by proving to be a right nuisance this time, and spoil Tynedale’s day?

WHARFEDALE THIS SEASON
Wharfedale have had a mixed season, not helped by a plague of long-term injuries and sit in 7th position with 73 league points. They have won 13 of their 25 matches, 8 of their 12 home matches.

Wharfedale’s start to the season wasn’t great, losing 6 of their first 9 matches but have improved significantly since.

Wharfedale’s home fortress takes a lot of breeching - their last home defeat was over 5 months ago. Wharfedale’s last home match resulted in a 24-12 victory over champions, and previously unbeaten, Sheffield.

The 1stXV know very well what to expect at Wharfedale.

COMPETITION FOR RUNNERS-UP
Tynedale and Macclesfield are competing for the league runners-up position which brings qualification for the one promotion play-off place at the top of our League.
While Tynedale have a difficult final match at Wharfedale, Macclesfield have a similar challenging match away at Sheffield Tigers. Quite tough. But, will a three-point lead over Macc. be enough for Tynedale to proceed further?
CURRENT LEAGUE POSITIONS

MATCHES OUSTANDING
25th April
Wharfedale v Tynedale
Sheffield Tigers v Macclesfield

HOW MANY POINTS DO WE NEED
To finish above Macclesfield how many points to we need? It depends of course on how Macclesfield get on at Sheffield Tigers:-
If Macclesfield lose or draw – Tyne finish runners-up regardless of our Wharfedale result.
If Macclesfield win without a bonus point (4 points) – Tyne need one point at Wharfedale
If Macclesfield win with a bonus point (5 points) – Tyne need two points (eg. draw, 2 bonus point defeat, any win)

BUT WE NEED A WIN
Regardless of Macclesfield’s result we do need a win at Wharfedale. As well as cementing our runners-up spot a victory could well give us a home play-off tie rather than face an awkward away journey to one of Launceston, Oundle (Peterborough), Bury St Edmunds, Birmingham, Clifton or Dings (Bristol).

PLAY-OFFS
Either Tynedale or Macclesfield will be entered into a four team play off to decide who plays in National One next season. Play-off matches are scheduled for May 9th and May 16th.
