The Tynedale second team took on their opponents from the Yorkshire Dales in a traditionally hard fought encounter and eventually overcame the combative visitors with a try in the last play of the game.
The Wharfedale side started the game facing the stiff breeze blowing straight down the field and soon took the lead, breaking through the home defence with ease, strong running and good support play enabled them to score two tries in the first ten minutes.
The Raiders then realised they had to raise their game and the promising youngster Thomas Beatty, playing in a new role at scrum half was making good use of some better possession, with Will Nankeville, Joe Hanning and David O'Neil competing well at the breakdown and finally, the Tynedale side could play some attacking rugby and with Micky Hall, Dicky Hall and Tom Robson all being held up in attempts to break through the Wharfedale defence the pressure paid of when Dicky Dunn crossed over the line to score in the 18th minute Josh Leslie converted.
After the restart, the Raiders had to make positional changes when Beatty was injured and had to leave the field with a head injury, Jay West moved to scrum half and Will Richards came into centre but Tynedale still managed to build strong attacking phases and Callum Morrell and James Ferguson were both kept out by the strong tackles of the Wharfedale side. The Tynedale side were then reduced to fourteen players when Dicky Hall attempted to clean out at the ruck, and unfortunately was adjudged to have made dangerous contact with the Wharfedale player and was unfortunately shown a straight red card. With no further score coming the half time score was 10 - 7 in favour of the Forresters.
Wharfedale were making great use of their numerical advantage and only great defensive play by Seb Jansen and some strong scrummaging from Oliver Wall and captain Ed Craney prevented the Yorkshire outfit from scoring on several occasions and a couple of tries were ruled out for forward passes in the back line. With Charlie Richards and Ben Robson coming onto the field from replacements bench, Tynedale began to deny the Wharfedale side possession but inevitably the Yorkshiremen broke through for a converted try and looked as though they would take the victory.
The Raiders then began the fightback and finally played their way back into the game, determined not to let the Wharfedale visitors run amok, with scrum half West running at the opposition at every opportunity he was rewarderded when Leslie fed him the ball and the pacy West made an arcing run to cross the line, Leslie converted for a crucial two points to bring the Raiders unbelievably to within one score of the lead.
The final changes were made with Jacob Brown and James Sample coming from the sideline to add fresh legs to the weary Tynedale side and were attacking the Wharfedale line with West to the fore and great runs from Micky Hall Charlie Richards and Morrell all came to nothing due to the strong Wharfedale defence who turned the attacking ball over on numerous occasions and were able to launch the ball into the Tynedale half with the wind behind them.
With time running out Tynedale launched one last attack and Hall, West and Jacob Brown all attempted to cross the line for the winning score before young Ben Robson managed to get over the line for the try Leslie failed with the conversion attempt into the wind but the referees whistle sounded to end the hard fought contest and for Tynedale to record a rare victory against the Wharfedale opposition.
