In the ultimate game of two halves Tynedale kicked off with the gale force winds of storm Malik behind them and found themselves pressuring the Billingham line early on, but the visitors broke away from their 22 and eventually managed to take a 10th minute lead with a try following a series of strong carries into the elements. Again Tynedale went on the attack and after Will Nankeville won line out ball Gus White scored their first try after a forward drive took him over to touch down, the conversion was added by Thomas Beatty.
Playing with the wind enabled Tynedale to play an attacking style and with Dicky Dunn, man of the match Jacob Brown and the front row trio of Oliver Wall, captain Ed Craney and White all working hard to produce possession for scrum half Matt Williams, the lead was extended when number eight Rob Stanwix scored the second home try, Beatty converted. Knowing they needed to build up a decent advantage before facing the elements in the second half Stanwix scored his second try again from a forward drive.
With half time approaching Billingham broke away with the strong running back row and centres forcing the Tynedale side to defend against the powerful attackers, despite the efforts of James Ferguson, Dan Kerr, Ross Keedy and Tom Robson the Teesiders scored a second crucial converted try to leave Tynedale with a slender 19-12 advantage at the break and with the prospect of facing the wind for the next forty minutes.
A penalty and a converted try gave the Teesiders the lead before Tynedale changed their style of play and began to carry the ball at the Lions defence, building up good phases of possession with Oliver Hillary Brown and Stanwix making strong bursts with the ball to test the opposition defence and with Nankeville pressuring the Billingham line outs to great effect Stanwix scored his third try to regain the lead for the Tynedale second team.
With the introduction of Rory Cramb, Owen Shield, Adam Barnes and James Crosby from the replacements bench, Tynedale were able to continue to drive at the Billingham defence but lost possession and the visitors ran hard at the defensive line and eventually broke through to score a converted try. The Tynedale side carried the ball back at the Billingham outfit and Liam Pitt benefitted from the strong runs of Crosby, Stanwix and White to bring the scores level, the conversion attempt was unsuccessful into the force of the wind.
With both sides looking for the crucial score it was Billingham who took the lead with a penalty awarded in front of the posts and despite Tynedales attempts to carry up the field in the latter stages, the Teesiders held on to the advantage to claim the points in the CANDY league encounter after both sides had contributed to an entertaining contest in the extreme weather conditions.
