Tynedale made the trip up to Mitford Road for this CANDY Cup semi final tie, bolstered by the inclusion of several Centurions players due to a number of regular players being unavailable for the game. The third team players did not look out of place having stepped up to the challenge of second team rugby confirming the depth of talent in the club at the moment.
The game started in near perfect spring weather on a great surface ideal for both sides to play open running rugby and both sides contributed to the contest despite the margin of victory for the visitors. The opening try came from Micky Hall, playing centre for the day when he used his strong running direct style to break the Morpeth defence to score to the left of the posts in the 9th minute, the influential number eight Charlie Richards added the second try five minutes later, Josh Leslie added the conversion.
With the Tynedale front row of David O'Neill, Oliver Wall and captain Ed Craney having the upper hand in the forward contest, Rob Earnshaw working hard at the breakdown and Will Nankeville and the hard working Jacob Brown in a man of the match display, winning clean line out ball, the ball was moved to the right by scrum half Matt Williams Callum Morrell came into the three quarter line from full back to use his pace to great effect to score the third try, Leslie converted. Further tries from centre Will Richards and Sam Harrison on the right wing, both converted by the trusty boot of Leslie gave the Raiders a 33- 0 lead at the break.
New signing Jonathon Dodd and Robbie Binks were brought into the front row at the interval and the first score of the second period came from Rory Dixon who outpaced his marker to score a try, converted by Leslie. The fly half Leslie scored the next try after replacement Andy Murray carried strongly through a couple of tackles and then showed all of his ability when finally hauled to the ground to off load the ball round his back to the South Shields youngster who galloped away for the score which he converted himself.
Cumbria newcomer Jonny Dodd scored the next try, in an impressive debut display Leslie converted, then influential Matt Williams punished the tiring Morpeth defence running in from 22 metres to score a deserved try, Leslie converted, the final changes were made when Ollie Murrell and Ethan McCleod were brought on from the replacement bench. The final try came from the powerful running Charlie Richards almost inevitably Josh Leslie added his ninth conversion to round off a Morpeth side who came off knowing they had contributed so much to an entertaining contest despite the scoreline suggesting a one sided outcome.
