Raiders shine in the sun

The Raiders recorded a comfortable victory in their opening CANDY league fixture at a sun soaked Tynedale Park which looked magnificent after all the effort put in over the Covid lockdown period by groundsman Peter Simpson, assistant Andy Purves and all the committee and volunteers.
The opening score came after three minutes when Micky Hall finished off a flowing move to score a try out on the right. The advantage was soon lost when Morpeth came back strongly to break through some poor defensive tackles to draw level with an unconverted try.

The Morpeth side continued to play attacking rugby in the Tynedale half, but from turnover ball Tynedale second string managed to launch and attack with Andy Harvey, Seth Kippax Jones and Harry Renwick making good ground into opposition territory, eventually allowing Ben Blakburn to break through the last line of defence to score a well worked try, fly half Tom Beatty added the conversion.

The Tynedale side were beginning to gain dominance in the set piece play and were gaining good possession in the line out with Jacob Brown and James Sample taking clean ball and Owen Loughead and captain Ed Craney taking control in the scrum. The next try came on thirty minutes with the strong running Ben Blackburn scoring the try with support from Will Richards and James Ferguson the stylish Beatty added the extras. This was the last score of the half and Tynedale led 19-5 at the break.

Changes were made before the restart with Ralf Johnstone, David O'Neil, Jack Bullen and Brogan Miller all coming off a strong replacement bench. The first minute saw Adam Telfer, making a welcome return to the Tynedale side after an absence from the game, the postman delivering the opening score of the half, charging over the line to ground the ball to gain reward for his hard work in the front row, Once again Beatty added the extras.
An almost identical try followed in the 48th minute when the promising young replacement prop David O' Neill went over in almost identical fashion as Telfer to add to the front row try scoring tally the reliable boot of Beatty extended the lead.

The next two Tynedale tries were scored by Jake Scott, making an impressive debut in the centre, before having to leave the field with a cut above his eye, Beatty converting again. After Rory Craney made his second team debut, the captains father proudly replacing Telfer in the front row, the strong running Jack Bullen capped an impressive display by adding the next try, Beatty converting once again.
The replacement hooker Ralf Johnstone was the next scorer in the 75th minute, before man of the match, Micky Hall rounded off an impressive personal performance, stretching over the line to round off an emphatic victory against a Morpeth side who had come close to scoring consolation points in the dying minutes of a gutsy display led by Rob Earnshaw the Tynedale squad member who was loaned to the visitors for the game.
